The song was written for the movie the City of Angels. An angel must jump off a building to bleed to make himself alive to be with a woman that couldn't truly see him until then. So in that case the songs true meaning is that an infinite and protected nothing is worth less than a short emotional something. I think whats great about this song though is not knowing what it is about. I hadn't learned why John wrote this until recently, and its helped me for so long before then. It can carry so many touching emotional meanings that are so helpful to so many of us.

Agreed! After growing up on the Hold Me Up album, I was initially pissed when they adopted this style. But listening with older ears made me really love the later songs too. And just being happy for the band finally making it big after years of working hard at it
