This part-soup-part-stew is one of my favourite dishes growing up in Thailand. Hard boiled eggs, tender pork belly and tofu puffs in a sweet-salty fragrant five spice broth. It's super popular amongst kids, but adults love it too! This was a staple at my school cafeteria in Thailand. It's also a great make-ahead dish that only gets better with time.

Not me bc there's variations of this & I doubt it's called the same per asian country. I just saw a short, clicked, & attempted to follow. So, this is on my feed now. I'm lao, & I really don't remember growing up on pork belly. Although I'm sure my elders used alotta fatty meats for this, I just don't remember it being that fatty. Bc as an asian, I think I've always been "funny" w/ food. Even for an asian, lol. Anyways, that short said ,"this'll bring you back." I cut up alotta ginger, & was surprised how much kick it had through all that cooking & how small I cut it up. But it was that taste that brought me back. I prob made a more diluted version but it was still pretty yummy. Almost $30 worth of pork belly... At least it's lasted me a week +

In Vietnam we have a variation of this dish and it's also a staple, pretty much always the first thing I think of when buying pork belly. We don't use five spices though, just fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, onion, and garlic. I'm gonna try your version, it looks delicious, and I love the adding of tofu, that's genius.

“Elementary school cafeteria” and “so good” are phrases not often heard together! 😂 I have an Instant Pot and I am thinking I could minimize the dishwashing by steaming the eggs in the Instant Pot before starting the stew, and by sautéing the pork in the Instant Pot.

Your stew was very similar to the Chinese (Taiwanese) style pork or beef stew! Yummy! :) The only difference was the sauce base, much simpler. And also using brown sugar or Rock sugar instead of Palm sugar. But it should taste almost the same, I believed. Thank you for showing the viewers your Thai style version. :) Six-month-old baby now? Time certainly flew by quickly! A one-pot meal will do well in a busy life for sure. Haha.....:)

Pailin your making me hungry....! I've make this dish a lot. This dish is easy and simple to make. I do it a bit differently and get more of the aroma when I wake up the next day. The way that I cook it is by using a slow cooker to cook them. I would also add carrots, scallions, potatoes and dried red/hot peppers and set the cooking temperature to low the previous night and it will be ready the next day. It is the best way to cook whenever having kids.
