Slap some bigger engines on to make them faster. Add some armor and shields to make them tougher. Replace the bomb bay with one single huge bomb. Replace the whole organic pilot and gunner life support system with a single droid brain. Have this droid brain man the gun turrets as well. And make it long instead of tall. Congratulations, you now have the Resistance Ultra-Heavy Missile. And don't give me shit about it being wasteful to make a droid ship with defensive shields, armor, and gun turrets, and then turn it into a missile, because it's even more wasteful to have a heavy bomber that blows itself up with an explosion front that climbs the columns of bombs it drops, and that's unlikely to ever even reach the target zone in the first place anyway because of how slow and vulnerable it is.

Interestingly, if you look back into Legend's Cannon it was actually Admiral Thrawn who used the Lancer's the most effectively. He would place them next to ISDs. In this manner the Lancer and the ISD form a sort of symbiotic relationship. The Lancer would keep the fighters off the larger ship while the larger ISD could use it's heavier weapons to defend the Lancer from larger threats it was never designed to deal with.

I'm sure the thought is that an ISD with full wings out can provide enough of a screen can give the isd enough time to knock out the enemy and cause fighters to route. Empire saw the rebellion as a bug to them until it was too late with Vader and Palpatine dead, the empire had advantages and numbers. Finally some admirals were incompetent, I mean look at Hoth, opening engagement had an ISD be knocked out even though that admiral knew that they had an ion cannon.

Ahhh, the Lancer. Always a fun one! More than twenty highly specialized anti-fighter weapons with highly accurate targeting systems.. The likes of which nearly half would be broken at any given point or having major systmes errors. In fleet engagements they would have to be stationed well forwards in the fleet to be able to effectively engage incoming fighters.. Which made them vulnerable to other capital ships which they couldn't run away from and with weak shields and hull. They were great at killing starfighters.. Provided they lived to face them.

By Wookieepedia at least (in Legends) the Y-Wing is given a maximum speed of 80 MGLTS and a Lancer of 20. An ISD-1, in comparison, has a top speed of 60 MGLS. So it couldn't keep up in high speed engagements with capital ships it was escorting or the starfighters it was supposed to engage.

With the high capability of rebel fighters, you can bet ISD commanders wanted that anti fighter screen as far forward as possible. Honestly its best position is at close range in small numbers. They could basically be a star destroyers close in weapons. Had it been given a couple of turbo lasers or some proton torpedoes, it would have made a nice anti-corvet ship; and considering how much the rebels loved their corvets it would have been a great investment.

I've always thought that the central spar on a Nebulon-B was a honey pot, that the armor there was actually very thick, maybe 10 times anywhere else on the vessel, and that the combination of thick armor and a hard to target section that seems venerable would draw enemy fire, but not necessarily cause damage.

You would think there would be an escort formation or holding pattern a smaller vessel could take to be inside a larger capital ships defensive screen or shields. As many of these support ships are not quite capital ship vessels, I think they were used entirely wrong. Wolf pack mentality, with smaller vessels like Carrack crusiers, would be how they should be used. Keep them moving fast, and into enemy ship blind spots, so that the capital ship has to re-engage each target.

Well in reality of star wars the Lancer was very dangerous to the Rebellion because they relied on star fighters. I think there is a comic scene where Wedge curses about being told that a lancer had jumped into the battle

I feel like a quasar fire carrier is a good fit. It’s huge, it’s slow, and lightly armed. It relies almost entirely on its extensive fighter compliment. Which, while not bad, once depleted, leaves this thing a big triangular target. Another I’d say is the gladiator. A well rounded imperial frigate. It doesn’t seem to excel at anything. While not a main line cruiser, it still lacks that big tonnage the Imperials like so much. Without all that firepower and fighter capacity like an ISD or some other bigger imperial warship, it’s kinda toast with a pass of some B wings and Y wings. There are my two contributions. Tell me what ya think!

I think the gladiators and whatnot would be used more for baseline law enforcement, search and rescue, etc. in the ass ends of the rim where there is no coast guard (which apparently is a thing). So using it to chase smugglers in corellian freighters it would be ok

After using them both in Empire at War's Remake mod (V3.5 + 4.0) your right, without it's fighter garrison the space nacho and gladiator are a bit vulnerable, though in the game both are armed with twin missile launchers and a few turbolaser batteries. They both seem more like a flagship for a small patrol fleet, like a heavy corvette or a light frigate. They dont seem heavy enough to be in a giant battle but they'd dominate a skirmish or raid. In number they work dead well, but individually they're out of place in a pitched battle next to capitals and bomber formations.

The Interdictor is a high value target that needs to be properly protected. In addition, by itself and against an equal opposing force, it can do pretty well. It just needs to be properly wielded.

As far as the Lancer is concerned, it isn't necessarily a bad ship to serve on, if it is in a fleet defence role. Certainly there is the possibility of being hit with a stray shot, but more often than not the larger capital ships would be the priority target for an enemy fleet. So let's be fair here, if a Lancer is pared with a larger warship, and both ships are being used to their best potential, it will most likely be just fine. There is always inherent risk during war.

In Legends, Palleaon noted that Officers actually *wanted* to serve on the Executor, because the Attrition of Officers was so high, you'd get promoted very quickly without really having to deal with alot of the service-internal politicking or having to do much for it.

It's a bit of a misconception. There were a fairly wide variety of Force users that didn't subscribe to the idea of the Light side vs. the Dark side, both in the Old Legends EU and the current EU. Likewise, there were a number of groups that acknowledged the Light/Dark dichotomy, but were less committed to the conflict. This often lead to the Jedi either condescending to them or demonizing them. Meanwhile, the Sith would often just look for ways to exploit them. And as you noted, the stories tend to focus on the Jedi and Sith. And as the two most influential Force-using orders, they tended to have a heavy impact on any other groups and are the focus of most stories.

Most of the "on-the-fence" groups kept to themselves and rarely, if ever, left their original worlds/regions. This is unlike the Galaxy-conquering Sith or Star-Trotting Jedi. So, Grey groups were vastly smaller in number and low-profile.

They were Imperial in Legends, with the Rebels stealing them early in the war. In Canon they are Rebel only.

Mostly because Star Wars ships were based on WWII ships. The WWII battleships were designed to slug it out with other battleships. WWII aa-guns were still primitive (the Bismark had 16 medium aa-guns and 28 light aa-guns and still had trouble engaging torpedo bombers). The solution was to use aircraft to shoot down other aircraft, which you see in star wars

WW2 projectile weapons dont risk overheating the ship when fired rapidly. a big old space lazer on the other hand takes boat loads of power and generates alot of waste heat and there's no convenient atmosphere or body of water to dump it into. Radiative heat dissipation in space relies on surface area and while big to our standards the lancer was small compared to the SD's so not all that much area to radiate heat away. Chances are they could have physicaly fit more barrels on the lancer but couldnt deal with the heat if they did so. Whats the point of having 160 guns at 1 shoot every 2 seconds vs 80 guns at 1 shot a second? Same number of shots per second over the whole ship. small advantage of being able to track more targets at a time if your sensor system is up to it but even as it was fighter pilots feared the sucker.

Evan Haskel micro jumping could be anything from an in system jump, (planet to planet in the same solar system) to jumping from one side of a planets orbit to another. Hell a micro jump could be a 10 km jump which is nothing in Star Wars. Only certain ships in Star Wars can pull it off though.

Lancers suffered more from bad tactics and misapplication than bad design. Deploying them ahead of the ISDs made them cannon fodder for the opposing capital ships; however, if ISDs engaged first and Lancers were held back until the starfighters actually arrive, they could cause a lot of trouble for the Rebels, whose starfighters and pilots were far less disposable than the Imperial TIEs. Of course the Empire's tactics were always crippled by plot-induced stupidity and Rebels never leave home without Plot Armor.

Well, the Nebulon had that weird neck design for a very good reason. The engines and reactor were apparently somewhat... temperamental and would explode violently given the slightest provocation, so the neck was there to try and save much of the crew in the likely event of a catastrophic failure. Of course, the fact that this makes the Nebulon even more of a deathtrap and whoever signed off on producing that thing is probably evil.

It didn't destroy itself, it was just flying into an asteroid field and tried to superlaser a giant asteroid out of the way. Superlaser made a few sad sparks, Darksaber got flattened.

for the interdictor, your survivability would more likely come down to tactics. Thrawn made great use of interdictors. They would pull an enemy fleet out of hyperspace and then they would retreat behind the lines of their fleet and put the other imperial ships between them and the rebels, or even jump in first so they could position themselves swiftly and pull the rest of the fleet out at a predetermined spot with pinpoint precision and timing. the enemy would see an interdictor or 2 jump in and send a small interception force only to have that force swiftly wiped out when the main imperial fleet would land right on top of the interdictors and immediately commence their attack.

600 meters long is twice the length of a modern US supercarrier, but a Dreadnaught is probably twice as "thick" vertically.....so it's in the ballpark of 4x the total volume......But it only has 2-3x the total crew of a supercarrier (USS Harry Truman is 3,500 crew + 2,500 air wing ~=6,000). So it's actually LESS "crammed" than a real-world capital ship.

@@EchthelionII I think it's mainly a battle of attrition with equally competent admirals. In this case, I think the Empire wins. Don't get me wrong, it would be a tough AF battle, but the Empire had the pound for pound advantage. ISDs are a force to be reckoned with, and due to equally competent admirals, we won't have any of those incompetent jackasses screwing things up as often. So therefore we have to analyze the ships and starfighters aside, the republic is simply lagging behind in firepower. Once planets begin to be isolated, it's only a matter of time before the forces are exhausted.

Fun fact about the Nebulon-B Frigate. In Legends it was an Imperial ship used to counter the early Rebellion (the war in Legends had been raging for some time before Luke joined up and was a proper war against a well organized and equipped Rebellion, rather than the canon skirmishes against isolated rebel cells and the actual war beginning earlier that week). The Neb-B served as a sort of step below the use of a Victory Star Destroyer, itself a step below the use of an Imperial-class. You'd use them on the Empire's outlying border worlds or to escort the larger Star Destroyers. Despite being intended for use against the Rebels, the Rebellion found them incredibly easy to steal, be it through disabling them in combat or just by raiding the shipyards. As a result, the Nebulon-B became more associated with the very Rebellion it was intended to fight against, given there wound up being more of them in Rebel hands than in Imperial ones.

The idea of point defence ships in space, you have them forward to intercept the fighters and torpedoes that come in the first wave, then you drop them back for when the capital ships get in range. During that part of the battle, they project their firepower forward to snipe fighters.

Always liked the Lancer in SW: Rebellion. Used properly, it wreaks havoc with the rebels plans. Since it's there to handle fighters (more to the point, fighter/bombers) it's easy enough to just post behind the ISD, then bring it up to handle the problems and stay somewhat protected. Strategies used against it would be designed around keeping away from the ISD until you can stop *their* bombers and screen. Slugfest otherwise.
