James Garner is possibly the classiest guy every to come out of Hollywood! I recall realy liking him in The Great Escape as a kid and later in the Rockford Files. I also like the fact that he has stayed married to the same lady for so many years. That is a rarity in his business. A good man!

crazy how he became an actor.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZCTZKGVhd6Jp6M If a lady had not pulled out of a parking place in front of him, he would have never been an actor. He pulled into the parking place and saw a sign with a name on the business of an old high school buddy. He went in to see if it was him and it was, he offered him work, he was a talent agent and producer. Jim was looking for work, he never thought to be an actor. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHnEe2N3bbKce80

He's damn right about how tough a grind a TV series can be. I knew a guy who was a regular on one, and when I visited him on location he was literally falling asleep in his breakfast because he was so exhausted from working until the small hours the night before.

I am sorry to say I didn’t watch The Rockford Files when it first aired. Through the ‘miracle’ of reruns though, I had discovered this gem. The show has a reality to it of a guy using his talents to eke out a living at $200 a day (plus expenses). He wasn’t’ high-flutin’ or in the gutter, just a regular joe. That is why it endeared itself to many viewers. Have the whole series on DVD now so I can watch them all. Over and over. R.I.P. Mr. Garner. The world misses you.

Toward the end the discussion about the Universal Studios, show what a stand up guy he was, not just for his money, but every other actor who worked on the show. James Garner reminds me of Burt Reynolds - both action stars with that cool sardonic sense of humour .Also both ended up in a lot of pain with the roles that they essayed ; Reynolds lost his good looks in the end with a reconstructed face .Whoever said movie making was glamorous obviously didn't try his luck in front of the camera . RIP to both of them .

As kincaide67 noted, Bob Costas does a good interview and Garner's the perfect guest. What's wonderful about KZbin here is that when this aired at 1:00 a.m. on a weeknight in the '90s very few people saw this. Certainly not the one-hour series production people working those 14-hour days Garner alludes to. Now, it''s here FOR ALL to see. And enjoy. How could we not notice: Garner's fiddling with his necktie throughout. Is that a sign of nervousness, boredom, dislike, or feeling proud of his choice of clothing accessory? Garner's like Jack Nicholson -- rarely seen without tinted glasses. If this interview was taped post 2008 Costas could have asked, "Jim, how many of your theatrical movies' and "Rockford Files'" negatives and prints were lost, burned, in the Universal lot fire?!" Tragically, I think that's one reason so many of the "authorized" "Rockford" DVDs are not full length. Signing off, I enjoyed this clip immensely.

SC Vandy Nervousness, he has stated in his autobiography, The Garner Files , that he suffered from stage fright and disliked interviews because of that. This interview was back in the day, ties tended to be awful, my late husband had some along those lines.😂😂😂💕💕💕💕💕James Garner was known to be straight shooter, couldn’t stand liars and those who abused their power to fuck over the little people. Read the book.😂😂😂😂

My two favorite Rockford lines: "You better be reaching for a sandwich, cause I'm gonna make you eat what you pull outa your pocket." (While going nose-to-nose with a young wanna be gangster reaching in the jacket of his three piece suit.) "Now you know the sound of one hand clapping." (After his obnoxious hippy female acquaintance gets punched in the face by a gangster.) My favorite Rockford episodes: All that had Isaak Hayes co-star in..... "Hey, Rockfish"
