Hi, I just discovered you today. My issue didn't come up. I have a small, private, local group. We're not selling anything or trying to grow. I have questions to answer and admin approval so I can check that the person asking is local, interested in our topic, etc. I have checked the settings as best I can (they change often) but now I have over 400 members, most are strangers, from anywhere in the world. It took me a long time to work out how to delete some of these members, but I discovered that I can't stop Facebook from recommending my group everywhere. How can total strangers just join even though the settings say admins only, questions answered only, etc.? How can I stop Facebook from advertising our private group indiscriminately and apparently allowing folks to join without approval?

Use the Admin Assist feature. It can deny membership based on your criteria.

I set up a group rule, but new members can submit joining requests even if they did not confirm....to avoid rejection and asking to confirm...

Go to the Admin Assist section. It can automatically decline new members if they don't answer all questions or agree to the group rules. You decide what criteria you want. It can reject people without a profile photo or joined Facebook just recently, as an example.

I am commenting two years later (Jan 2024) My current issue: I've been the Administrator of a small (70 members) PRIVATE FB group page.I could always see the NAMES of members who have seen my posts. I just noticed the other day that the NAMES of members viewing my posts are NO LONGER appearing. I can only see the number of members who viewed it. I sent a 'help' message to FB but I don't expect any solution. Anyone 'out there' on this thread have some advice for me? Thanks.

use the Facebook Feedback feature to describe some problem where the system regressed (broke) or a feature is not working properly. Track Progress is such a feature.

Hi just been watching your video and you have way more features in your setting than we do in our group. We have a general group . Also don't know if you can help but our group is for lost dogs. I have been trying for months to get my Discussion page to have a Featured info slide at the top of the Discussion page but cannot find how others do it. They say I will most likely have to wait for our page to be updated by FB. How can I get our group to be updated so I can access more setting to do this.

Looks like the only way to do it now is via desktop under the auto assist area where you can automatically approve members based on criteria such as if the members profile is more than x months old.

0:03 HELP! Am an Admin on friend’s group. To help him I’ve taken over researching those who requested membership and did not respond to qualifying questions. Yesterday someone went in and dropped approximately 25 membership requests. Most of the names were of people already members or who did not make the request at all. The section is called Manage Membership and should be in all groups. What are you trying to do specifically?

I have a group where I set "Approve all member posts" to On. However, this doesn't seem to apply to comments. I don't see a setting that allows me to view and approve comments before they post. I think you can set that up in Admin Assist. Add that people cannot automatically post if they are new to the group. See if that helps.

Do you have a revised version of this video? Meta/Facebook has changed menus so much that I cannot find any of the settings so I can change my public group to private or have a potential member agree to rules before I approve their membership. FYI, I'm on nearly 300 groups myself, and I tend to look for private groups because of the sheer volume of spammers and scammers that Facebook/Meta allows to use their platform.

How do you exclude profanity in a FB group? I am one of the admins on the page and found this Click Settings at the top of your Page. Click Profanity Filter. Select Medium or Strong. Click Save Changes. But I don't have settings at the top of my page. I have group settings along the left but the profanity filter is not included in there.

No. The reason is if someone joins a group with the expectation that it is private, Facebook doesn't want to betray that expectation.

The only way I found was to make every post needing approval by the Admin in the settings. You can also give pre-approval to known members you trust.

Hi FMSM, Thank you for providing such detailed tutorials. I am having a problem setting up my Group page on Facebook. I have provided the ability for other members to approve new members but I do not see how this feature works on their end. My first member asked me how she can invite her friends to the group but because I only see the admin side of it I have no idea of how to instruct her how she can go about actually doing so. On the top where the name of the group is is a button that says Invite. She should be able to see that.

If it's a private group the Share button is often missing because the post is only visible to group members, so even if you shared it, nobody else could see it.

Thanks for your video. That is very helpful. I have a question. I created a private group which will have no more than 12 people in it. It has to remain completely private for confidentiality reason. BUT, since I am the admin. when you search the name of the group, you can see I am a member. I do not want anyone to see that. I guess I can turn the group to hidden? If you make the group hidden, I believe that is the case. You should remain hidden as the Admin. I don't know of any other way though.

Check the settings. You can turn that on or off.
