And yet you can’t point to one example of how this affected the outcome. It’s not like he was asking the players to independently decide whether to take the ball or defend at the start of OT. You’re so determined to take a shot at him that you didn’t bother to consider whether this particular issue actually matters. The bigger issue it seems was his decision to take the ball instead of defending at the start of OT. if you want to criticize him for that then at least you would’ve picked a criticism that actually made sense. But no, you decided to be lazy and instead complain about something that is essentially irrelevant. Nice going!

As a rams fan we have played Kyle quite a bit and there’s one thing I have always noticed while watching these two teams. Now Sean and Kyle obviously coached together. So it’s very interesting to me how different their coaching styles are. The best way I could describe it is this. Sean treats his players like fellow warriors and you’ll see him running up to players from clear down the field to celebrate with them. It really feels like Sean is just ITCHING to get in there with his warriors. Whereas Kyle always seems unsatisfied with what his teams doing no matter how well they’re playing. It seems to me that Kyle treats his players like nothing more then his toy soldiers that he can throw into the battle whenever and wherever he pleases. This is why they constantly have so many injured players due to his admittedly aggressive play calling style. He wears his players down so much that by the time the big game comes half of them are hanging on by a thread.

I've been a 49er fan since the early 1980s. I had reservations when I heard news of Kyle Shannahan getting hired by the Niners after the performance he pulled in the Falcons - Patriots SB. Shannahan is a good coach, he'll get the team very far. But he clearly has issues in the biggest stage. It sucks because GM John Lynch has done an *amazing* job assembling fantastic teams. His dad Mike did great jobs as OC for the 49ers on our last SB winning team, and bagged 2 championships as HC for the Broncos in the late 1990s. It also has to be mentioned that until the late 90s Broncos won a championship, the NFC had been running a decade plus streak of winning the Super Bowl. Shannahan era Broncos broke that streak.

As a lifelong 49ers fan, he's definitely overrated. His clock management isn't the best and his #1 fault is he tries to get too cute. He does things that will make him look like a genius if it works, instead of just doing the common sense things. The last 2 "Big Games" he's put the ball in the QBs hands when he had dominant run games. Up by 10 in the 4th quarter vs the Chiefs with the ball. 1st down gets you 5 on a run. What do you do next? Run it, right? Nope. Play action with mid Jimmy G for an incompletion. Then put in in his hands again for another incomplete. 3rd and 2 with about 2 minutes left to go in the game. A first down will pretty much seal the game. You've got 2 downs to get a first and salt the game away with the best RB in the game. Run it, right? Nope. Pass it with Purdy for an incomplete. Mahomes got the ball back and WE ALL KNEW he'd at least tie. Not 100% on him, but they also had KC on a 4th and 1 for the game and YOU PLAY BOTH SAFTIES HIGH??? When I saw that I knew KC was going run it, get the 1st down and score a TD. Here's one last example. The first game of the season we were driving late against GB. A TD puts us ahead. There was a tackle where the clock was running. We had at all 3 timeouts. I was saying to let the clock run because we had all our timeouts and you don't want to give Rodgers time on the clock. Well, he ran a play with like 15 seconds on the play clock and score a TD. Great, right? Well, he left like 45 seconds or so for Rodgers. Of course he drives down the field and wins the game with a FG. Simple stuff like that that your average fans can see, but he doesn't. Look, he's miles better at X's and O's than me. But you can't be great at details and overlook the big picture, which is what he does. He's bought into his own hype and tries to be a genius too often.

Mike Shanahan also knew how to use his running backs to win the big game. Ricky Watters with the Niners and Terrell Davis with the Broncos. Why does John Harbaugh always get a pass? The only Super Bowl he won was because of a questionable defensive stand (several holding and PI penalties that were not called) and shady safety when punting from the endzone after almost blowing a 25-point lead. He also had the most dominant team in the league in 2019 and 2023 but his inability to adjust and game plan for playoff caliber games cost him both times. Everyone wants to blame Lamar for 19 and 23 but the game plan against KC absolutely sucked last year. KC came out and punched the Ravens in the mouth and they had no ability to adjust. Yet Harbs gets no criticism, and everyone picks apart Shanahan.

KS does not think OLinemen are that important because he thinks he can always outmaneuver the defense (spoiler: he can't) He always second guesses himself, which leads to stupid decisions, like totally abandoning the run TWICE in crucial moments in two super bowls. Kyle didn’t have a killer instinct, Mahoney threw 2 interceptions in the first Super Bowl against SF but won , the way to beat SF is to stop their running game. Sean McVay wants to throw more than Kyle, he is not afraid of his QB to throw an interception, before I always thought Sean McVay will win Super Bowl before Kyle.

Kyle can’t close a big game…..fact. We’ve seen him choke twice against KC, both times he had a lead late.
@greyklopstock71553 ай бұрын
The fact that 90% of these chokes stem from the same thing is deeply upsetting as a niners fan. If he didn't learn that his opponent was THE CLOCK after being up multiple scores against Tom Brady, ain't no way he's ever going to learn against Mahomes or whoever. We'd have absolutely beaten the Bengals in 21, considering we'd beaten them a few weeks earlier. And we should've won both the super bowls against the chiefs. But Kyle Shanahan refused to burn clock, and it cost us two super bowls if not three. The thing that's most frustrating is we've let three head coaches walk in this time frame, and two have shown themselves to be high level guys already. We've had every opportunity to pivot, and if his last name wasn't Shanahan Kyle probably would've been canned after losing to the Rams. Frankly, I was amazed we gave him an extension last year. Idk how you see the guy make the same season ending blunders three times in the super bowl and come into the next season confident. At this point, if we don't win it all this year, and our team has at all a competitive roster, I'm done with Shanahan. I wanted us to trade him after the travesty that was this year's super bowl and sign Bill. Seriously, if we traded Kyle we could get MULTIPLE first round picks and likely completely rebuild an entire side of the ball. Like, we could rebuild and reinforce our offensive line with all those picks and get in a coach who knows how to win. If Doug Peterson can get the W, I'm sure we could find someone halfway reliable

I love Kyle but he has two big issues: 1. Reluctance to run the ball to close out big games 2. An unwillingness to pursue elite special teams play. Kyle does not care one iota about his special teams unit. As long as they don't get in his way, it's out of sight, out of mind. When you're in the playoffs, every punt return is a massive deal.
@wiredtardis4 ай бұрын
As a Niners fan, I think of Shanahan as a team strength and the greatest weakness of the team. I think he has massive flaws as a HC that causes the team to lose big games. His refusal to not employ turnstiles as RT and RG, his tendency to pass in 4th pressure situations, his lack of gutsy playcalls like you would see from the likes of Dan Campbell and Sean Peyton, and his failure to take accountability have all built up his inability to get a SB ring. Shanahan needs to grow as a HC by allowing Brock Purdy to more completely take over the offense by allowing him to call audibles, make adjustments to plays and play designs, and take certain plays off the table. The Niners could traded Jimmy G for Tom Brady after SB LIV, but, since Brady would have taken control away from Shanahan, the deal wouldn't have appealed to Shanahan even if it got him and the Niners a ring.
