I really needed to hear this. After dealing with anorexia for a year and getting to 4% body fat I allowed myself to enjoy thanksgiving. From there I couldn’t stop eating until I was 13% body fat and thought I had binge eating disorder. I got insecure that I gained a little weight and needed to mentally cope with the fact that that weight was what my body needed to feel better and that it’s so unhealthy to be as underweight as I was. I had such a low body fat percentage that I stopped breakdancing which used to be my favorite hobby and always made me happy. I remember always suffering with no energy, no happiness, very low blood sugar and constant hunger despite always eating from your cookbook. Greg you saved my life ❤️

@@Chrislubey__1 I gained 5 pounds of body fat over thanksgiving break and honestly felt horrible about it, but honestly now I’m trying to accept the fact that I’m still underweight and should gain some more to help myself. I’m like you too, I’m so used to seeing my entire skeleton when I look in the mirror shirtless and can count every single rib and vein, that when my bones look less defined my messed up mind thinks I got fat. I’m going through this too and just know you’re not alone.

@The Great Pretender really depends on your height, weight, sex and activity level. I can’t just give you a number. I was 5’4, trans male and 95 lbs. When the anorexia was the worst I was eating 800-1000 calories a day. After several binges over a couple months I’m now a 100 and am trying to recover, and bumped my calories up to 1700 and am now maintaining. I definitely do not recommend trying to be 4% body fat because it’s extremely uncomfortable and unhealthy. Don’t ever eat the amount I was eating, trust me I was miserable. Even after reaching a higher body fat percentage my stomach still feels like a black hole and no amount of food can satisfy my appetite.

The coach is right. Health and happiness is the most important rather than having a sixpack. I accepted that for my height its okay to be 85-90 kilos (overweight bmi) and i still look & feel great. Going below this weight triggers uncontrollable eating and i feel like shit. Screw those websites telling me to go 70-75 kilos lmao. I was always the “big“ kid so i think its genetics that would have helped me survive in prehistoric times due to my body always storing fat. That said i ride the bike and swim multiple days a week. I consider myself fit 💪🏽 I take the stairs when I‘m not tired instead of elevator.

I recently discovered this channel. I love Greg's motivation and transparency. I lose fat well when I'm using carbs strategically but I've found overall eating many healthy carbs consistently (while it takes me a little longer) makes for a better overall existence/journey. I can still be healthy and maintain my goals without additional pain and sacrifice. In addition to Greg's spot-on advice on binging, my initial thoughts were genetics aren't an excuse to be lazy or unhealthy either. For example, diabetes runs in my family but I have to make sure I'm doing all I can to avoid it, within my control-however, doesn't mean I won't ever get it. Looking forward to BINGING on the rest of these videos!

I feel much better than I did and unfortunately you are right I'm about half way to my goal and I can be happy if it's all I can do. How ever I got this far with no exercise. So I am joining a gym instead of reducing calories anymore than they are at this point. Hopefully this will get me to my goal of 165 lbs 🙂. For me, bingeing as a punishment is also a thing (and for other people I know within eating disorders) - I have anorexia binge purge subtype - sometimes I binge because I've restricted too much, but sometimes it is also emotional - like I can deal with the anger I feel from binges better subconsciously than the hopelessness I feel without them - or my head says I'm useless if I haven't managed to do x, y and z and then binges as a punishment because it makes me more miserable - I know that sounds ridiculous but just wanted to explain how it can also work for other people too. Loved the video :)

Same here. I have actual diagnosed BED and have binged since I was a child because I hate myself and to me fat is the worst thing I can be. Never restricted - the binges are purely a psychological disorder and I hate it when people tell me to just freaking love myself and intuitively eat when it's nothing to do with restriction. I'm glad Greg acknowledged there are some people his approach doesn't apply to, but I would argue he is describing reactive eating, not true binge eating.

Like ive always had some problems with my stomach(IBS) and i was constipated for 3 days and that triggered a huge binge and then it started all over again lol.

I'm buying the ingredients now. If I get to 15% to 17%, I'll be happy. Actually, if I get halfway there it will be great. I was told what is great for a 20 year old male may not be healthy for a 73 year old male. My diet is good. I went through the meatless cookbook and made a list of the about 200 ingredients (and about 100 meals/dishes) to get familiar with what the meal plans look like. I was surprised how varied the meals are. There are things like healthy shepherds pie, mexican, italian, french, american, salads, desserts, snacks, dips, pea not butter (love that), and healthy things that look like what people crave on "cheat days"... but I won't have to cheat. As far as ingredients go, there are seasonings, high protein powders/flakes/fiber/textured meat substitutes, low calorie syrups/sauces/jams/dressings, vegetables, fruits, egg substitutes, fat free and vegan cheeses, breads, flat bread, wraps, (I already got into Joseph's Lavash Bread before I knew Coach Greg ate it), and a bunch of stuff I never heard of or even knew it existed. There are so many meals in this cookbook, I already bought the dry goods that appear in many of the recipes. Then I'm going to pick out meals one at a time and get the ingredients that are specific to each. I'm going to pick one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner to start. There is so much in the cookbook that it would be too overwhelming to buy everything. Note that in the back there is a listing of fruits and vegetables that can be used for substitutions. My diet has been pretty boring and I've made mistakes along the way, so I'm pretty excited about this. In general, in the past, I've had little patience or attention span for cookbooks, but this is great because it is tried and true by Greg, looks tasty, and incorporates sources of protein that aren't meat. I was surprised at the protein content of some of the vegetables. I DO eat chicken breast, white meat turkey, and salmon, but wanted to know other sources of protein. Obviously I had no idea of what was out there. So for a lazy person like me that was doing the broccoli/chicken or salmon/rice/beans meals, now I can eat like a normal person. This is great as it is all in one place. I know this post is long and sounds like an ad, but I'm psyched. I've worked out for decades and ate boring meals since I graduated from college, so I'm not one of those January people you see in the gym from January through March. Besides, I have a gym in my house. Lol.

@@gregdoucette Coach Greg, I am now 179 pounds and 16.9% body fat. My non-fat weight is estimated at 150 pounds. I wasn't trying to lose that fast. Note: Since watching Greg's videos a year ago, I was 195) including 1.5 pounds of muscle in 3 weeks. 2 pounds per week might have been faster than I intended. My muscle % is still in the excellent zone. Water right in the middle of normal. I guess that means I'm not dehydrated. I have been enjoying the recipes in the Meatless Cookbook. So is my wife. I started my fitness journey in 2019 - deciding to get shredded I lost 40 lbs in a year. That last 7 lbs I can attest to the things Greg is saying. I would plan on a diligent day of diet adherence and out of nowhere put away an entire ice cream cake in an impulsive binge. Afterwards I could not even recall deciding to do it, or how the food tasted, and wonder what the hell happened. it's like your mind becomes feral. My hunger hormones were so overwhelming I started bargaining with myself that i would actually be better off bulking and would perform better at the weights on a surplus. luckily I was watching Coach Greg and others like Will along the way so I knew what was going on. It took about 9 months for my hunger levels to stabilize to the point I can stick to a deficit or maintenance again.

I had to go through army selections, so I started training and dieting very seriously. 6 days of training at high intensity each week, constant slight calorie deficit (no huge 400/500/600 calorie deficit or anything like that), and it worked. Everything was incredible for a year, then a few weeks before the actual selections I started bingeing a shit ton. (And this was when I was at maintenance too, and that was an other reason why it was so frustrating for me) I was to a point where I weighed myself EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING. And guess what? It was rarely enough for me. I couldn’t put the for down, then I cried like a baby. I didn’t want single digit BF, I just wanted to lose weight and increase my cardio and bw exercise performance more and more for the sake of PT, and it ruined me. I gained 6kgs in a few weeks at least, and my mental health just sank. I passed the selections, but I was still trapped in this piece of shit ED, and still am. I felt awful because I remembered when I was disciplined and stayed away from cravings and bingeing triggers, but now I got in my car and cried for minutes straight. This whole comment may not have made any sense because it’s 2am, I tried to be as clear as possible. What I want to get across is: thank you so much for talking about this, I seriously appreciate it.

May you be encouraged and comforted and get back on track asap, slip ups are normal, shows we arent perfect, and all our progress isnt gone over night... get back up and try again. I have to tell myself this, I pray we find out all our triggers and why we binge. I did it twice this week on keto dessert. Very bizarre. I'd love to say random, but probably emotionally driven but sweets also are addicting.

@@_einodmilvado that’s the issue: sweets are disgustingly addicting. I have to say, my situation has slightly improved because I finally passed selection, and I will be enlisting and go to basic real soon, but I do have the impulse/urge to binge from time to time, and I also am very afraid of the scale, tracking calories and stuff like that. I also started training way less and way less intensely due to me feeling burned out and overtraining. We’ll see how it goes.

The rant about most “fitness” influencers having abs and thinking we had to look like that hit really close to home. I was never overweight as a child and relatively healthy. I have an older brother who was always pretty lean, had abs, and started getting into putting on muscle when I was about 9 years old. I always knew that I was chubbier than him, but I kind of just brushed it off. But it always seemed as though my parents were telling him to eat more, and me to eat less. When I was nine, I joined a competitive swim team, dimming two hours 5 days a week. Naturally, I started to looses weight, and became a little leaner. However, when I was 10, COVID-19 hit, and I had to stop. I starting doing more gymnastics and got pretty good at it for a self taught gymnast. I by August, I had gotten my round off backhand spring, and I was so happy. But, I was gaining a little weight. It wasn’t much, maybe 5 pounds, but I started to become super self conscious. I started seeing Chloe Ting flat abs challenges and Gabriella Whited 3 min ab workouts showing super fast results. I started doing those but didn’t see the results I wanted, and winter was approaching, meaning I couldn’t do gymnastics in my backyard, so I cut out food. It went from 1/2 of what I normally ate to a quarter and so on. I was loosing weight, but not fast enough. Watching myself become thinner and thinner became addicting. I loved it. And I developed anorexia. Eating less than a thousand calories a day, exercising and running for hours on end, I had an eating disorder and exercise addiction at the age of 11. My parents noticed, but I denied every word they said. I was throwing away my food, and I quickly went into a downward spiral. I was less than 65 pounds at almost 5 feet tall. My heart rate was almost 40bmp, and I looked like a living corpse. One day, in the middle of my run, I just collapsed. I fainted. Some random person, but one that I would be forever grateful for called 911 and I was admitted to the ER. The doctors told my parents that I had an eating disorder and that I had to go to a treatment center, but my parents didn’t want me to leave home. They thought I could just eat more at home, and I would gain weight, but that’s when I started to throw up my food. I couldn’t avoid eating it, and I couldn’t exercise it off, so I threw up. After a week, at my first check-in, I had lost another 2 pounds, and that’s when my parents said that I had to go. I ended up staying at the treatment center for 11 days before I was discharged by my parents request. But those days were hell. The night before I had to go to the treatment center, I was crying like crazy, because I didn’t want to gain weight. So I decided to take my life. At the age of 11 I was suicidal. I swallowed a bunch of random pills, hoping that I wouldn’t wake up the next day. But I did. And thank god I did. I took that as a sign, and from then on, I decided that I was going to recover. God had kept me alive for a reason. I had a second chance. It was so damn hard, even when I felt like my stomach would rip. Fear food after fear food, I conquered them, and my anorexia went away. But a new problem came, I started binging. I was so scared that I started restricting again but I knew I couldn’t go down that path again. So I decided that I was going to do it the right way. I started eating more for breakfast, and just more throughout the day in general, and it went away. After so long, I was finally normal. To top it all of, right before my twelfth birthday, I had gotten on to my local gym gymnastics team. Something I have always wanted. I am now fully recovered, stronger than ever, and have learned to love my body, and having a thigh gap and abs, is just not worth it.

I'm very happy that you are still with us 🤗❤️🥰 But I must say at 12 you don't hit puberty in full stride yet. You need a lot of calories to gain height and strengthen your bones. I hope you don't restrict and it's ok to be in the higher end of the normal weight. Because what's important is to gain as much height and bone density as you can. Puberty is a magical period where you can change your body to the best possible, your metabolism are revving like crazy, your hormones are raging, and your food will be utilised to the max to change your body. I'm not saying eat whatever you want and be obese, I'm saying eat whole healthy nutritious food as much as you need, plus a little bit more, to form a beautiful and healthy adult body. Good luck.

As a bio student, I can confirm Greg is indeed speaking facts. When you do cardio your body looks for carbs which provide short term energy so you can do instantaneous movement (eating pasta the night before a cross country race). This is because carbs need less energy to be broken down (carbs and proteins use 4 calories per gram and fat 9 calories per gram). Fats are long term energy and are the only macromolecule which can be stored within the body. When you do cardio consistently you first burn the carbs and some of the stored fats. This is why it’s a slow process to lose fat when you shred. You get energy from the fat as the carbs are not enough. This is also why low carb diets are recommended to those who gain a lot of fat. You use the energy from the fat to function and indeed maintain homeostasis. Greg is speaking the truth for those asking in the comments :)

I don't know about this comment. I carried with Keto at a very well researched way, for 2 whole years, and I came across too many road blocks. It was not effective at all in the long run. In the short term it was great but that's only because it made it simple for those who don't like calorie counting. But after having hit 205lbs from 220lbs, scale wasn't going down anymore. That's because I didn't know what the freak I was doing in terms of.. CALORIES. Watched a bunch of coach Greg videos and retrained my brain to things I literally believed in 10 years ago when I was a teenager, reincorporated a bunch of high density, low caloric, high protein foods, and within 3 freaking months I hit 198lbs from 210lbs, below 200lbs FINALLY after 5 years. I'm continuing my regime, counting EVERY single thing that I eat, and I feel great and in superb control by the end of the day. Knowing what I ate. Even upping calories a bit during exercise days. Keto can kiss my ass goodbye for the rest of my life. Or UNTIL maybe when I'm 80 and need to do it for health preventive reasons such as Alzheimer's, only then would I consider it.

I had a very bad habit of binging last year. I restricted myself from “bad foods” for years and when I’d get a chance, I’d buy something and eat all of it until I was sick. I’d force myself to throw it up because I felt so bad. A friend recommended keeping a food journal and documenting my emotions associated with the binge. I’m now capable of maintaining a healthy diet and eating what I crave in moderation without feeling bad about it.

People get into a binge eating cycle because it’s like a pendulum swing, going from one extreme to another. Restricting and then the body increasing bingeing cravings, and then that throws your normal eating habits out of whack and then gaining a lot. Then going to the extreme restriction again. Also once you have created this habit of bingeing, even if you break the habit, it can be easy to fall back into old bad habits. Just like an addiction. Not impossible, just can be difficult if you’re not doing it right.

Apart from what you said Coach Greg about an individual's body and its comfortable body fat level, I feel it also comes down to the amount of discipline you have towards your goal. I myself felt like binging sometimes when in a cut but then I usually go on to evaluate how the macros of that binge would impact my gains and that's the moment I am able to bring down my craving for binges.

I personally haven’t had a 6 pack, but I’ve had a prominent 4, but my lower ab muscles are really underdeveloped. That was during my time in the military though. I’ve recently fell off of my fitness journey that was on and off for the last 8 years. I have to get back to my best version, and I wanna pass it. I know I have good genetics, but I just don’t have the motivation. I started lifting and could bench press 185lbs without any prior training. I got up to a 315lb max in a year of consistent training, but that was the only year I actually took everything serious. I really feel like I can achieve a really impressive physique naturally like my dad did. He was in prison all his life, so it’s not like there was much else to do. I don’t have that “luxury” all these distractions and shit. I need my motivation to come back and stay.

Used to binge eat and purge from time to time. Pretty common among fitness people. What fixed the behavior for me was eating low carb. Basically when you are eating a lot of protein and fat and not much carbs (sugars) you feel satiated. I was really scared of eating fat for years, thinking it would make me fat. Low carb fixed that. Meals became more filling and I didn't gain weight like I had assumed. I don't eat low carb anymore since I feel I can perform better with carbs as fuel but it was nice to fix the eating disorder.

However, I was delusional, and elated by it. Wasn't sustainable. Ended up gaining most of the weight back and developed a eating disorder along with it. Take it from me, just try to eat as healthy as possible whilst remaining realistic about your goals.

I'm close to the leanest I've ever been, which was back in April of 2021. My scale (not accurate, I know) had me in a range of 9.5% 9.9% rather consistently (taken under the same circumstances every single morning). I was doing fine then, working from home and enjoying my nutrition plan, not often feeling overly hungry and eating 2,700 calories, which was still technically a tiny deficit for me. I gained some weight back after going back to the office and struggling with not having my kitchen at my full disposal throughout the day. I binged due to being overly hungry and trying to rely on sustaining myself on protein bars throughout a long work day. I've managed that by preparing a lot of food to bring to work each day, but I've been in a prolonged deficit and I'm nearing that level of leanness once again. I've been binge eating regularly these last couple months where I just can't stop. I think the issue is multi-faceted. In addition to what coach Greg mentioned regarding my genetics and leanness, it is also about emotions. I tend to turn to food for comfort and so I can't put the fork down sometimes, consciously or not, due to emotions and stress. But, doesn't mean I want to give up and gain body fat. Just use various strategies moving forward - adjust calorie intake on subsequent days and try to move more. I don't want to suffer down to 5% (probably ever), but reaching and maintaining 10% would be a great goal for me, personally, and I can certainly manage that eating 2,700 - 2,800 calories at maintenance (5'-8 1/2" tall at 170lbs, lift 4-6 times per week and get minimum of 10k steps daily).

I'm no coach but i have the exact same problem so here's my two cents on it. Focus on calorie dense foods like peanut butter, add olive oil to your meals, eat whole eggs not just eggwhites etc. Basicly the opposite of all the advice on low calorie foods. I try my best to have balance between healthy, nutrient rich foods and foods that are just high in calories. Liquid calories are also helpfull, im the morning I have a smoothie with half a cup of oatmeal, full cup of milk (normal or almond or whatever is cool to drink now), banana, scoop of protein powder and some frozen berries. I also find that when i eat a lot for a few days consistently my apetite gets a bit better and its easier to get my calories in. But yeah I also tend to eat 1-2 meals a day if i just go by my hunger so it takes a lot of willpower to eat enough food to gain weight. Start small and slowly increase the calories, throw in foods you enjoy, hope this helps.

Sometimes your body just makes you do shit. A lot of overeaters thing the world just doesn't understand that, but they really do. It feels like someone else is putting the food in your mouth. Willpower is limited, and often times you really, _genuinely_ can't control it. That's why you need to create an environment for yourself to exist in that mitigates the temptation. That's what it's all about. It's not about having a lot of willpower, it's about putting yourself in a place where you _don't need it._ Know your trigger foods, and don't buy them. Make a list before you shop, and stick to it. Stop fasting all day. Eat before you go out, so you don't feel tempted to pick up snacks on the way home. All that stuff. That's the key.

I stopped talking birth control (and learned to track my cycle) and bam my binge eating is gone… turns out a side effect from birth control is higher ghrelin and less susceptibility to leptin 😒 just thought I’d share for all the ladies because the struggle is real.

Water helps with hunger! And also meditation does wonders!! If I want to binge it's always around 10pm so I go to bed before then ! Works for me but might not work for others .

I do agree with a lot of points in this video, but I also think that it depends on the individual. For me, my natural body fat percentage is around 25-30%, but I've been maintaining 10-12% in the long term with enough self control and discipline, and because my current lifestyle allows for it. I'm able to prioritize nutrition and exercise. I've also never had a predisposition to binging, so this is not something I experience, despite the increased hunger. I definitely have to make more sacrifices and I know that this would be much easier with better genetics, but the challenge has been worth it for me. At the same time, I know getting any leaner (which I don't even want to do) would be very unsustainable. If you're genetically inclined to be more overweight, that doesn't mean you have to be. If getting lean is something you want to go for, this video's advice shouldn't hold you back.

10-12% for a woman is incredibly unhealthy and is below the max of essential fat %. Do you even have a period?
