Back to the belt/chain situation: If your engine is an EA111 then it is a chain, if it is an EA211 it is a belt. This roughly dates back to the MQB platform (Golf 7, Octavia III, Seat Leon III) and starts from around 2013. If your car is 2015 or younger it is an EA211, so it is belt driven. It is very easy to tell for sure, if you google your engine code it will give you if it is an EA111 or 211.
@Vintaginside Жыл бұрын
It's also easy to spot by looking at the car's technical sheet: EA111(chain) is 1390cm3 while EA211(belt) is 1395cm3.

Adding to this, the CAXA does have issues with the coil pack, the standard coils spark barely enough to ignite, and often start missing quite early on, replacing them with a coil pack that produces a bigger spark most definitely mitigates potential misfires, even when the gap isn't perfect, a spark is not always a spark, bigger spark is better, then again 1.4 tsi and tfsi spans so many engines with so many iterations that there's bound to be some problems for some of them with just about anything. As for the timing chain vs belt, it depends on the model, however what a VW mechanic told me was that what they initially did was put chains on all engines, including the 122hp models, then decided to cut costs on those chains and opt for chinese trash which was prone to early microtearing and stretching, then they decided they needed a model inbetween, and decided to soup the 122hp engines up to 160hp, without actually testing the chain (stupid as hell), only for it to cause a ton of issues because that chain could not handle the added power, then from 2011 and onwards they upgraded the chain for all models, so it shouldn't have been a problem anymore, and then for some reason (probably because of public perception) from 2012/2013-ish they started going back to belts because the chains (which should've been better actually had they just used the proper quality from the start) damaged their reputation.

My brother-in-law's wife has a 1.4T Jetta. She loves it. My wife drives a 14 20T A4, it burns a good bit of oil! About quart or liter every few hundred miles! The car is white but the rear looks like a diesel it's so covered in soot! Also at less than 80K miles she burnt an exhaust valve. Carbon built up and clogged the injector on cylinder 2 and since it is tuned when she put her foot to the floor one day the valve gave up. I should have put new rings and pistons in it when I put the valve in but that was just more than I wanted to do. One day when I put a big turbo on the car and turn it up to about 500hp it'll need rebuild it anyway!

Thank you for your work! Highly appreciated! I have a specific question - how does this engine combine with an LPG system? Any particular issues that the engine might suffer from after the installation of the LPG system? I have found a very well maintained car with this 1.4tsi engine (2017 Ateca) with 80,000 km on it, half of which with the LPG system running (installed at 40,000). Should I be concerned? My current and previous cars were running on LPG without any issues, but both are/were with old-school N/A and super reliable engines (Honda K20 and Opel X18). The 1.4tsi is direct injected modern turbo engine, so I have no idea what to expect from the combination with LPG.

Everything is aggressive and after a day or a nice drive.. back to the old problem. - Hight Fuel consumption Done on the car!!: - removed Catalyst, no mapping was done. - Mass Airflow intake filter The rest is stock.. Services has been done on the car, new oil and petrol filter, spark plus, coils and oil. New water pump. What do you think is the problem..?
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
Engine oil. What grade of oil are you using? VW503 spec or similar? Taking out the cat without remapping is likely to cause problems as it is expecting a cat and reduced emissions which can lead to fueling issues and problems as it tries to meet emissions standards without a catalyst. If you take off the air filter does it clear things up? (only for a brief time to diagnose please don't drive around with no filter). It could be a worn turbo not providing enough air it does however sound like it is overfueling. These issues can be impossible to diagnose remotely, especially due to the intermittent nature of these problems.
@jasunto Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking my wife's 2017 Jetta 1.4T issue is related to fuel delivery. Probably start with the filter first. Battery and alternator are good. Sometimes, not all of the time, it hesitates on a cold start and cranks a bit before starting when more fuel is needed. It is fine once started and fine starting warm already. Other than the fuel filter, I think we are going to do both air filters, brake pads, spark plugs and coil packs soon. Has about 115k miles. Already had to replace the waste gate a year ago too.

It is geared up for better economy and greater efficiency. I don't know too much about them as it is much newer than I can afford, but they probably use COD & the "Atkinson or Budack or similar" cycle to further reduce fuel consumption. It may be a bad idea to let it sit to warm up but I always wait for the RPMs to drop to normal after starting it. You really should avoid shifting out of park if it is not at normal idle speed or you may damage the transmission. Some people seem to shift to reverse just after starting the engine and it may be ice cold still. It is a horrible idea because the oil and transmission fluid will take a moment to start circulating. Of course they do a lot better when it is warm. I even after waiting that 30 seconds or so often like to take it easy on it for the first few minutes. In cold weather that is especially true. Treat it well and hopefully it will last and treat your wallet well too!

Would be great to have a video on the carbon build up issue on the intake. Seems that because it is direct injection, these engines are prone to the problem. I have the symptom on a 1.4tsi where it runs like a bag of spanners when first started from cold. Any recommendations for how to fix it?
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
You have the EA111 engine, so the PCV is dumping oil vapour into the inlet which builds up on the valves. What an annoying problem. An oil catch can can reduce this problem fairly significantly. I had a local garage carry out a BG intake clean on a carbon clogged engine and it returned to as new condition. They removed part of the intake hose and inserted an injector which delivered precise amounts of cleaner over a long period of cycled RPM's. Removing the intake and doing a walnut blast is another option which many people try I've not had much success with intake cleaners and the DIY approach so can't recommend you waste time an money on these. I will do a video on this problem though as it affects so many modern engines.
@robd9863 Жыл бұрын
@@torquecars That will be great if you can do a video on it. I have heard of the BG system and it seems to get good results, but the only place in the UK I can find is waayyyy down South and not near me. I suspect it is also expensive. Stripping it all down and cleaning manually is not a 5 minute (or DIY) job!
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
Popping off the PCV vent pipe from the intake gives a fairly easy route for a spray to enter the intake stream. The BG clean I had done was around £80 which I didn't think was too expensive. Have a chat with local non franchised garages, they often have solutions which prove to be cost effective for this pretty common problem nowadays.

It does this when the engine is full warmed up too. Could this be PCV? Could it be carbon on the inlets (even though engine warmed up)? Thanks.
@torquecars10 ай бұрын
Check for error codes via the OBD port. It could be a number of things, so pretty hard to diagnose remotely. The overall design of the engines was very similar between the 1.2 1.4 and 1.5 so the basic principles will apply to each of those.
@mickandrews94589 ай бұрын
Many thanks for the reply and sorry for taking so long to get back to you. As it happens it was as simple as just requiring a spark plug change. Modern engines with ECUs have feedback loops, so what would probably have been a simple single cylinder misfire in the past now comes across as something different because the ECU reacts to its sensors and presumably in this case cuts either fuel or ignition momentarily across all cylinders. This makes things harder to diagnose.

The diagnostic read "cam position sensor" I swapped the sensor and the engine ran terribly so returned to original sensor. I read the manual and saw that the timing chain recccommed changing at 90k miles. I got this done and the light went away. The car still has the rough sound start which lasts 5 seconds before sounding normal. I think this is just typical of this engine. Other things to keep an eye out for is the door actuators fail at sround this age too. This is an extremely common fault and you can buy a replacement for £70ish. Takes 1-2 hours to fit. Problem seems to be worse in hot weather, maybe makes the grease more viscous? Otherwise a great car and engine if kept serviced! Anyway hope this helps someone in the future!

Lost count of the amount of VW 1.4 TSi models I've sold over 40 years in the business, I've found the 160bhp over the entry level 122bhp to be pretty much faultless but as usual its all down to regular correct servicing and how the vehicle has been cared for, I only buy vehicles with a Full Service History ( Preferably Main Agent or Specialists, not a quick back street oil change using cheap oils ) up to 2018 they are mostly chains but chain or belt they all need changing at some point in their life, no reason why you shouldn't get mileages comfortably in excess of 100,000 miles, as I say providing its been looked after properly. Turbo's are an ancillary and not a reflection of these engines as a whole, all turbos can wear and be problematic on all makes of vehicle.

Good question from what year on would be good to know
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
Sorry for my slow reply my friend. The comment I made is general, the newer the engine the more likelyhood there is of problems being sorted and resolved. There was the EA111 which had most of these issues, especially on the early units. The later EA211 revision sorted out most of the issues, fore example the chain was (generally) replaced with a belt. By the Gen 3 even the carbon build up issue was addressed with the advent or port injection (in some if not all models). Burning oil has not been noted much on the EA221 Gen 3s. Always buy the newest engine you can afford when it comes to the VW group. There are exceptions so it's hard to give a year as some brands used engines for longer periods than others. My EA211 has been fantastic with no issues whatsoever but I'm expecting to do a carbon clean at around 50,000 miles.

Get the cheap upgrades done first, but bear in mind that the turbo will usually need mods on the exhaust so make sure the stock downpipe and exhaust will fit your chosen turbo, or do that all together. You'll need a remap to bring everything in line so add the turbo and remap last for best effect.

@torquecars Жыл бұрын
This is usually a valve seat or piston ring issue. Inspection with a camera probe should help narrow this down, you'll see carbon building up around any weak spots. Either option can be quite expensive to sort. I have seen an engine flush and oil change improve mildly low compression and as it is such a cheap thing to do you don't have anything to lose by trying it, get a decent oil flush additive though.

@torquecars Жыл бұрын
It is probably carbon build up. It could be down to worn injectors or as you suspect a turbo issue but these tend to come with a siren or whining sound. Loss of boost pressure from the intake can also result in a lack of power. There are quite a few reasons the car might be down on power it really needs a diagnostic to determine where the issue might be.

I recently bought a 2015 8V S line saloon, 1.4TFSI 7 speed auto. I brought the car to an auto trans specialist for a service in Oct. Out of nowhere I got an error message on the dash saying gearbox malfunction: no reverse gear. Reverse gear and second were nowhere to be seen. I got onto the garage I got it from and they replaced the mechatronic unit in the car. under warranty (I only have 1 months warranty left) they used a reconditioned part. I have had the car back a few days and I noticed that gear changes aren't as smooth and responsive as before, especially in the higher gears there is a lot of hestitation when changing up and down from 5th, 6th and 7th. Also when changing from drive to reverse or vice versa it takes a while for it to go into gear. It almost feels like the clutch is slipping, do you reckon the clutch is going in it too, or the mechatronic unit they replaced as no good? Or maybe they needed to retime/code something. It's a small independent garage so I think they just wanted to patch it up to see me through the end of my warranty. Id be greatful to hear your opinions on this, I'm going to call the garage regardless, but as you know some garages can be less than helpful toward the end of your warranty. Happy to send through a donation for your time also. Thanks

I am getting this shaking recently when on idle. However I am getting an auto start stop fault flagging up. Took it to one garage and they said there was a misfire showing up on cylinder 2 and they just removed the fault code and said it was working again. After driving it away from the garage the fault just appeared again and the auto start stop doesn't work still. Took it to another garage who replaced a spark plug on cylinder 2 and the coil pack and removed the fault code then said it was fixed. Yet again drove it away and same shit again. Now I have taken it back to the audi specialist who have done more digging as they say and have said that it seems like I have a carbon build up and I need to get this walnut blasting done. They also told me that the auto start stop fault is connected to this misfire. Any thoughts?

This is an interesting question and I will do a whole video on this topic as it affects so many modern engines. Get an engine compression test done: This test checks the engine's ability to compress air and can help to identify problems such as worn piston rings and if this is limited to one cylinder or is a wider problem. A camera can also be useful to inspect for wear and tear inside the engine and head and identify any possible ares for leaks. Common Causes of Oil Burning in Cars Worn piston rings: Over time, the piston rings that seal the combustion chamber can become worn, allowing oil to leak into the engine and be burned. The top piston ring with the wavy edge is called an oil control ring. It's a crucial component in the engine's oil control system, responsible for controlling the flow of oil into the combustion chamber and preventing oil from being burned. The wavy edge of the oil control ring helps to scrape excess oil from the cylinder walls and return it back to the engine's oil pan. This helps to reduce oil consumption, improve engine efficiency and performance, and prevent harmful oil from entering the engine's combustion chamber. Damaged valve seals: Valve seals that prevent oil from leaking past the valves can become worn or damaged, causing oil to seep into the engine. High mileage engines: High mileage engines are more likely to burn oil due to increased wear and tear on engine components. Failing turbocharger: A failing turbocharger can cause oil to leak into the engine and be burned, as well as increase engine heat and oil breakdown. Additionally, a failing turbocharger can also cause excessive engine heat, which can lead to oil breakdown and increased oil consumption. If a car is burning oil and has a turbocharger, it's important to have the turbocharger inspected by a mechanic to determine if it's the cause of the oil consumption.

My problem was not listed, noise, lifter noise or this is a very load engine, sounds like A TDI but it is a 1.4 tsi gas engine
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
Sorry I only listed the common problems, as with any engine there are lots more things that can go wrong. Have the lifters been adjusted? Has the oil been changed regularly and to the correct spec. Does it smoke or lose oil much? Is it down on power? One thing that can happen is the variable cam timing adjustment starts to fail and will just clatter around, it will usually cause power problems and gaps in torque.

@torquecars Жыл бұрын
It would be interesting to see what the sensors are showing via vagcom and if it were running lean or rich. The airflow metering may well be soiled and causing it to mess up the fuel trim. A bad O2 sensor can also cause it to back off power without reporting an error as it is just getting wrong figures to work with and doesn't realise there is a problem. I guess you've done the obvious checks for boost leaks and split pipes or bad joins.

Hi. I want to buy a VW with petrol engine from 2014 or newer. But it's hard to decide which engine to choose. I am between 1.2 TSI or 1.4TSI but I heard all this problems with this engines that it makes me reconsider the switch to 2.0L diesel, because I people say that might be the best from VW. I am aware of 1.4 problems , but what do you say about 1.2?
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
I don't know much about the 1.2 as I've never had one to play with but on paper they share much with the 1.4 though but with less cylinder capacity they don't tune up as nicely. If you only do short journeys I would avoid a diesel with a DPF. I am very happy with my 1.4 - avoid the EA111 early versions. Anything after 2012 is generally very well made and will serve you well. Common problems do not mean unreliable engines, when you compare the number of these engines with these issues to some other European car brands they are extremely reliable. Keep on top of servicing with any modern engine and it will last for many years to come.

@torquecars Жыл бұрын
I understand this to be a low boost problem, have you done any mods or recently changed the turbo? On a VW engine you'll see a Boost Pressure Regulation: Control Range Not Reached when you look it up. The wastegate actuator or boost leak could cause this problem by not allowing enough exhaust to flow through the turbo. Calibration of a new turbo, even if a straight swap is always recommended. I guess at higher RPM everything is fine, it's just at this low end which suggests to me the wastegate/wastegate control valve could be sticking or not opening early enough. Are there any turbo whines or siren noises?
@sotcutv8795 Жыл бұрын
@@torquecars no I only hear my turbo whistle slightly when I'm in tunnels I got the car 2nd hand so I don't know if its been modified thanks for the reply I'll look into the westgate do you think it could be sticky westgate ?
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
It is hard to say remotely without seeing the car. When people put on new turbos they assume the wastegate arm is at the same length but it needs adjusting and this is the most common thing I see causing low boost at low rpms. By the time the revs get up the turbo is getting enough to spin up within tolerances although at the bottom end of it's range. I do wish garages would do more diagnostic work rather than just banging on parts "to see if it works better". Let me know how you get on, I'm sure your experiences will help many others reading this.
