I just wanted to thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been driving around for over a year with no display on my radio (2012 F250). Although the radio still worked, this was really irritating. This past weekend, I was hesitant, but tried your method. Start to finish, 30 minutes. Good as new! Awesome, thanks

This is a great video. I BET, dealers hate to see this. They would charge hundreds of dollars, even if they just fixed it but, they would tell you that you need a "NEW" radio. And they are really expensive. Probably over $600.00.
@jeffescortlx4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much yes. They don't typically train the mechanics for circuit board repair, so they would have to replace the entire radio. You are correct.
@jeffwilliams20314 жыл бұрын
@@jeffescortlx I hope you make more of this type of videos. Stealers, I mean dealers, would "NEVER" tell you to take it to an electronics repair shop for a hundred dollar repair when they can make a couple hundred dollars selling and installing a new one.

Been told that GM starting around 2010 if any module goes bad you have to replace it with a new unit not a used one from a junk yard. I guess they cannot be reprogrammed. I bet more auto manufacturers are doing this too. How I found out is that I had to replace a abs module on a 2010 Buick lucerne, put a used module in sent it for reprogramming after replacing it and got a call from the shop that tried to program it and they call some GM help line and was told that they are one time program not reprogramable. Get the car back and had to order one from GM and the first one was bad too, then had to get another one which was good. Was also told that all modules in this car cannot be replaced with used.

That didn't look like a re-solder job, just a process of melting some kind of flux over the pins sticking out. What kind of flux was that? I've fixed those kinds of faults when I found corrosion on those type of pins that were shorting it to the pin next to it. Usually just cleaning that off restores function.

ok well would explain why mine goes in and out depending on temperature. and i could solder but 1 i dont have a soldering iron and i myself havent been to keen to mess with it. think i will just get an aftermarket radio with a cdplayer and bluetooth. theyre not that costly even to have best buy install them. and ive been kinda wanting a full screen touch radio anyway. but still interesting to know why pushing on it i get changes in brightness when it does display or tapping affects it.

One bad Ford radio faceplate... vs. all GM electronics, (including radios,) and mechanicals. Except for the LS... engine by itself. Then there's the interior plastics and fabrics. Go to a junkyard, you'll see a larger section for GM. They sold more cars, so duh, but you won't find what you need for your GM car or truck, because they've already been picked clean due to the parts failing for everyone. Where as if you go for a Ford radio, you'll find one that works, with most likely an upgrade in features. It will work and isn't tied in with crazy body modules or ridiculous 2 ohm speakers, doesn't have buttons ruined by the oils from fingers. So yeah, I'll take that Ford.

A cheap soldering iron will do fine. You don't need very much power to reflow these resistors. Some flux would help make the joints look nice and clean.

Yes. Although the chances of a used unit to either have the same issue or have it soon is high. Best option for reliability is to have the joints reflowed with leaded solder.
