@@cristian-flaviusradu2090 oh no!! 🥺 In order to prevent breaking a string, I suggest playing the pitch on something while you tune. This way, you won't go above your intended pitch. You can use KZbin to emit the pitch you want or just push down a key on a piano or use a pitch pipe or even use an app on your phone when you're tuning the peg. Also, make sure that you push to peg in WHILE you turn it. This will prevent the peg from slipping. I hope this helps!

HAHAHA! I echo this sentiment. THANK YOU KENNEDY VIOLINS. I can't believe that in a million years playing the violin, I never heard this before. (There's a good chance I wasn't listening.) And I can't believe that after a repair at one of the best violin shops in my town, I got my violin back restrung poorly enough that I had to research and find this out. So I guess I should thank them.

Yes, it is appalling how may players AND shops are unaware of how to properly string violins. I think the biggest issue is that a lot of luthiers do not play the violins they repair. They string them up and have no idea the frustration that soon occurs for the players when they play their violin for a little bit. Glad I could help!

@@santisolar1070 it's okay. As long as it's a violin string, you can find very affordable Sets of strings on eBay and amazon, and as long as your careful, you can replace it pretty easily.

I won a violin in a contest. It seems like a cheap one you see on amazon. But it was free. I've never taken a lesson or anything, But messing around with it kept going out of tune. Tried this and it's staying in tune now. I 'm not very good, but no one ever is at first. Thanks for your pointers.

Destring the violin, pull the pegs, and put rossin on part of the peg that contacts the wood. Always worked for me. It increases the amount of friction between the two different woods (or plastic for some pegs I guess). Just like rossin increases friction for the bow and string.

Glad to help! If your viola has been sitting for a while and your strings were really out of tune, then you'll want to look at your bridge. More than likely it was pulled forward (towards the fingerboard) when you tightened your strings, so you'll want to straighten it so it does not warp. Good luck!

Wow I can't believe this really worked! I was trying to tune my G string, but it wouldn't stay, so in my anger, I pushed it really hard and the string broke. Thanks for this!! I kind of did this informally with my violin and students’ violins because once you get the string in the peg’s hole, I like it to be tightly and evenly wound. And I’ve also seen people wind strings unevenly and overlapping, and then when it’s time to change them, it’s wrapped and tangled and seems overwhelming to have to unwind and change strings without pliers. But I never knew that pushing the peg in was going to over time change the shape of the pegbox’s holes🙉 thanks so much! I’m gonna be more careful with this from now on.

Yes, it's definitely a learned skill and the more you do it, the better you get at it. Just remember to do everything gradually. If your violin is REALLY out of tune, you'll have to go back and forth between the pegs and the bridge for a while until you get where you want to go. You won't be able to do both in one fell swoop.

This trick is awesome. I recently bought a new violin, and every string needed this. The E5 string took me 6 tries to get it not to slip, but that's probably a mix between me not doing something right and it being a new string. Thanks for making this video!

Our luthiers use this technique when winding the strings during the setup of all our instruments! Due to humidity/temperature changes, our instruments often experience some slipping upon arrival to the customer, but following this video to rewind the pegs should take care of it!

OMG!!! I watched this video because my D string didn't work and then my E string didn't work. Well, my E string sounded way worse than my D so I tried different videos until I came up to this one. After he did an example with the G string I nearly threw my computer against the wall because here I am trying to figure out how to tune my violin when all of a sudden, it was simple. Awesome! I just bought a Viola for my wife for Christmas and I had to bring her along to make sure it was short enough for her to play it before I bought it for her. We were in the music store and one of the pegs kept jumping out of tune. The salesman gave her some "Peg Drops" to help keep it from slipping and that seems to have worked. She got it tuned up and it stayed in tune. This looks like a better solution than putting something liquid on the Viola.

Hi there, thanks for the positive comment! Yes, this method works for all string instruments and all string materials. It's just the mechanics of the peg and scroll box that make all the difference. Of course, with a cello, you'll have to push in a lot harder and most basses a have different tuning mechanism, so it's basically violin Viola and cello. Thanks!
