A few tips from somebody who has battled acne for 30 years. This doctor is absolutely correct. You must find out what is causing your acne. My father always used to say “The first thing a man in a hole needs to do is stop digging.” In my case it turned out to be my diet with the biggest offenders being soda and chocolate, I quit them both cold turkey. My appearance and all the time I was spending dealing with bumps and spots was more important to me than drinking Coke or eating KiKats (both of which I loved). Then you can focus on removing the spots you currently have. Any number of products and/or techniques will work but be patient. Even if it takes months as long as you’ve stopped making new marks the time will pass quicker than you think and it is extremely satisfying watching your skin get clearer by the week. I almost cried one day because my face went from looking like a road map to being spot free in less than six months. I can personally vouch for Equate Scar Gel and several other products but even baking soda will do the trick. If you are African American, Hispanic, or even just a a darker skinned Caucasian no matter what product you use try to put it ONLY ON THE SPOT if you hit the areas around the spot clean it off quickly or your face will end up looking like a putt putt golf course. My favorite technique for small spots was to dip a Qtip in the product put the very end of it on the spot and spin it, if you get some product outside the spot quickly flip the Qtip to the other end and clean off the excess. The method for baking soda is to wet the Qtip first then dip it in the box then spin it on your spots. For best results do your treatment at night before bed and wash your face first, the cleaner your skin when you treat the faster your marks will be gone. One more thing, if you have chronic acne the drug Erythromycin will change you life but you need a prescription and you cannot take it forever because you will develop a resistance to antibiotics. Sorry for the long comment but I know the suffering involved with walking around with spots all over your face. I’m a man and I actually went out and found some concealer that matched my skin so I can rub it on really bad spots in an emergency. I remember one time I had a spot in the middle my forehead so big that people thought I was of Hindu faith. Six months it was there.

Thank you for your wonderful video. I am over 65, and even though i have been indoors most of the past two years, a few sunspots are appearing on my face. I now use sunscreen every day and a hat before going outside. I will never try to tan my face, again. I was a girl who tanned easily, but now, my arm skin is telling me that I will no longer tan evenly. Even my brown eyes are much lighter in color. I am willing to begin using products to fade the pigmentation spots and I will make my first appointment to assess my skin with a dermatologist right away.

I raise monarch butterflies in my garden, so I'm out in the sun pretty much all summer. All summer long, every year, I have the melasma dark upper lip. I've grown used to people staring at me or telling me I need to shave my mustache and have also grown tired of trying to explain that it's my skin and not a mustache. I'm going to try the naturium. Fabulous as always, so much to learn and you share so willingly Dr. Locke. I just know I will never find a dermatologist like you here, as I have been to a few over the years, including one who told me "you are getting old, you are 38, not a movie star, so just live with with the uneven skin tone", yes, he actually told me that. I am a woman of colour, now 54 and after discovering the retinol miracle, I am getting to a point of feeling good about the improvement in uneven skin tone, and you have helped me so much! Before you I was just trying this and that. I am using the "purple" bottle Cerve retinol, started it about 4 days ago, and since I have used retinol before it seems to be doing well on my skin. However, I really need to find the "blue" version as I do have a few dark spots that I want to fade further. Here in Canada the resurfacing most likely has another name that it's sold under, as I can't find it online locally. Thank you Dr. Locke!

I am loving your easy to understand videos on skin care. Thank you so much! Could you comment or make a video on what foundations are the least irritating for sensitive skin. I have 67 year old skin, so no acne problems yet every time I try a new skin care item or foundation I develop small bumps under the skin. Thank you for the great videos!

Yeah, I was hoping to find some answers, but here's the thing: my "age spots" (appearing in the last few years, maybe since I turned 60 or so) are on my _torso_ ...which has not seen the sun in decades. They're not about acne or sun exposure. I suspect they are related to some liver issues...so maybe I need to research "liver spots"? I've also got increased hemangiomas, mostly on my torso as well. Probably not related. Aaaannd, my skin has been "bronzing" on my extremities for decades, but has really accelerated in just the last few years and is now happening in "hot" areas (under boobs, elbow creases). Time to find a dermatologist who has some answers to all this, I guess.

@@Kelly_Ben I wonder what it is with brands always changing their formulas? There must be a reason. The doctor could probably just look at the ingredients listing to see if it's decent or not.

I cannot wait for your video of how to use these products in a skincare routine for morning and night!!! I have BOTH post inflammatory pigmentation from acne that is so stubborn & melasma plus my skin is sensitive! I have heard that being too aggressive with treatments can worsen melasma so I am interested to see what you have to say. Other you tubers have shared this so I would like to hear what you think. Thank you for putting these videos together I know they require a lot of work! But you do them so well ❤️

Same! My face is covered ( kinda) and its so annoying. Its so stubborn! It gives me little hope for clearing my skin since ive only NOW wanted to change my skin (had very bad picking problems.. and scar picking..) and that was nearly 1 - 2 years ago. (lateish 2020?) Im so nervous, but i pray that my skin only gets better! :)

I’ve tried copies of the Skinceuticals with 20% ascorbic acid, and saw no results. I wonder if 15% would be better. I sometimes am sensitive to plant extracts, so not sure about the orange extract in the Glow Maker, but am interested in trying it. I use tretinoin, which works great on fine lines, but haven’t noticed a lessening of age spots. I have lightened a few age spots on my hands with Paula’s Choice 8% AHA. But it doesn’t seem to work on most of them. I’m 61 and can’t afford expensive treatments, so I’m moving into acceptance lol. Unfortunately, the Australian Gold has plant extracts. I use the Neutrogena Healthy Mix, it doesn’t break me out. The Elta MD tinted mineral sunscreen works well for me, I just hate the price lol. I wish Australian Gold would make one without the plant extracts, but I know I’m in the minority. Thanks for the helpful info and recommendations!

Hi Dr, I love how you explain everything, but I have a question. Is there any natural products that you can recommend to us? I look at the ingredients of Cerave and I found this product which is not good at all for humans. Phenoxyethanol Used as an anti-bacterial in cosmetics and stabilizer in perfumes, phenoxyethanol is actually very harmful. It is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin, especially to nursing mothers or infants. Phenoxyethanol can have an effect on the brain and the central nervous system. It irritates skin and eyes, and can cause blistering on skin as well. Although many skin care products (even some organic products as well) use phenoxyethanol in small amounts that is “not harmful” to skin, if you use the product multiple times a day, every day, it can cumulate and possibly affect you. Do you have any suggestions?
