Fixed Low Coolant Light On My 2016 Ram 2500 By Replacing The Reservoir, Sensor, & Lower Return Hose.

What’s up everybody. In todays video, I will be replacing the coolant in my 2016 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins. My low coolant light has been coming on and off. My original factory reservoir was looking bad and I may have a bad sensor so I decided to replace the reservoir, sensor, lower return hose, and coolant. Once done, my coolant temps look very good and the low coolant light never came back on.

Hope that was it. Great vid. Don't forget the egr cooler you should check that as well and inspect the inside of the cooler to make sure it is not a hairline crack and burning off in there if you have not done an egr delete

Thanks for the vid. My OEM Rad looked identical to yours, except it was crushed at the bottom. The replacement has a thumb screw and nipple so you can drain it without tools and route fluid directly into a bucket. I thought, why didn't they make it like this the first time?

Just a heads up for someone replacing the sensor, you don’t need to drain the coolant. The sensor is inside a compartment in the tank that is separate from the coolant. There is some sort of magnet on a float in the coolant chamber that opens or closes a “reed switch” on the sensor. I was able to get my sensor out without breaking it, and it tested ok, so I think I have a problem with the float mechanism. Other than change out the tank, I just wired in a jumper so the warning light stays off

Can you explain how you did the jumper. I have the same issue, put in a new tank and sensor, still have low coolant light

@Kamikazekyle05 I’ll be honest, after replacing everything my light ended up coming back on not long after. I ended up with a bad water pump. Make sure you get that checked as Ram had a recall on them and mine was replaced for free.

Did the bad water pump cause the low coolant light to come on? What caused the light to come on if it wasn’t the sensor or reservoir?

@davidbryanwoodworksandmore I believe it was the failing water pump. Once replaced I had no further issues. It was a dealer recall so it was replaced for free.

Radka from Klimes auto. very common problem on these newer dodges. Sediment on the bottom will mess up the sensor and only new reservoir (comes with sensor)WILL FIX THIS PROBLEM , dorman part is ok,

Thank you. I’ve had this problem for over a year. I’ve replaced everything but the reservoir. The light just stays on full time now. I will replace it and see if there is a Difference. Actually now that I think about it. What I’m noticing is when I fill the reservoir up , when I drive over a hour or two when I come to a complete stop the coolant overflows out. We replaced the cap thinking that would help but it still does it. Oddest thing. I’ve been wanting to put a cold intake on the truck so after watching your video it seems it makes since to do them at the same time. Thank you

Mine just comes on in the cold morning then literally goes off after like 30 seconds but when it is level and not in the drive way I get no light

I have the exact same issue. Slow drip passenger side. Replaced the coolant reservoir and thought I was good. Nope. Took it to the dealership and they said reservoir again. Replaced it and still leaks, same spot. I’m stumped

Hey those dual shocks are they an upgrade to hold both or did you have two in the front when you bought it. I am putting a 7” lift on mine and it only has one shock. Is it a upgraded aftermarket plate holding both??? Thanks

Since you didn't put the heat shield on the reservoir... have you had any issues with the heat coming off the turbo?

Great looking truck man. My question is could you have flushed the radiator out with just maybe distilled water, fill it and let the engine heat up and then drain it again before putting new anti freeze in. I have the same year model but mine is a 3500 and I’ve never drained or flushed mine so I know it’s due. I have been a little worried about getting air in my lines though.

You could flush it that way but you risk getting distilled water left behind in the system unless you have a machine to vacuum it all out 100% but a simple drain and fill is fine.

Lot of work!!! On average, how much did you spend in parts? After the fix, how is doing the coolant sistem? What was the amount of coolant to fill up to reach the minimum line? Did you add. More later? On my truck l noticed some pinks spots under the hood just above or next of the coolant reservoir but still finding where come from or is the leak. By the way nice truck and the front end looks awesome!!! Good job.🙂🙂🙂

It was a lot of work. I probably spent $150 total. However, this was not the problem, I found out my water pump was bad.

I was leaking coolant. I thought it was the reservoir but then the leak came back. I took it to the shop for a pressure test and found my water pump was bad. I then got a card in the mail from Ram that they had a recall on a water pump so I got mine replaced free.

This is what happened to me as well. I took my 2015 RAM 3500 in for a water pump replacement. I got it back 2 days later, I noticed that sweet / burnt odor of leaking coolant but I figured they had spilled some .I left it sit (it's a ranch truck for pulling) for maybe 2-3 weeks and then again drove it to get some posts and was leaking. When I took it back to the dealer, they denied they did it and said they'd sell me a new tank for 400 bucks. I told em get bent. They're not there as anymore, good truck - shitty dealership

43000 miles and the coolant became so dirty!!!
