Fixin car paint part 2: Turning a Wingnut

This video shows how i made a simple threaded steel disc wingnut to increase clearance between the air cleaner / hood of my Factory Five MK4 Cobra. While there are alternative air cleaner options / filter elements, i wanted to maintain a 3" filter element given the housing is semi-custom as its offset because of an HEI distributor.

In stead of using a standard taps i use Spiral Point Gun taps. They cut much eraser.

1. Just trim the bottom of the air filter housing piece. Also, trim down the back of Ford emblem so it sits more flush. And 2. Weld (not glue) a threaded washer like the one u made to the underside of the lid. You spin the lid to tighten. Then attach the Ford emblem via a strong embedded magnet. Could also epoxy the Ford emblem to the top of the lid since it would no longer function as a securing piece.

Hey Todd - believe it or not, i chucked up the emblem in my lathe and took ~.250/.260 off to make about 1/8" clearance before it messed up my paint. Can't trim the housing either because its offset to clear the HEI distributor and I actually had to turn a spacer so it wouldn't hit the fuel rail (check out my FFR machined parts video, 1:15 in and it will make sense kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6fWemprpbSqf9E). I like your idea of a spin on lid / thanks for the comment!

Hey Joe Do you have an album showing a few angles of your sidewall and the cooper cobras. I'd like to see your Goodyear placement relative to the cooper black lettering.

Hey Paul- i'll see what i can find / i basically sanded the sidewalls flat with a dremel and for letter spacing, google "goodyear billboard stencil" and a bunch of images are out there which show location / etc. Its not a perfect fit with the factory lettering, but I can tell you that you (and everyone else for that matter) will never notice when you are done

have you looked into getting fender spats or guards for the rear fenders? im looking for a company to go with, so i wont chip the paint

Thats a wise choice- I have some chips in the fender area already and I know this is a popular mod on these cars. I've also seen some guys use texture paint/grip paint/POR15 on the them too (mask & apply) - lots of options / you are wise planning for this and it will save your paint. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Ben- no EFI / its carbuerated / I do have future plans to potentially upgrade to EFI, but first I'm going to trial on a Chevy 350 project I'm working on now - we'll see / thanks for the comment!
