I got into modding consoles by fixing old broken ones too - my childhood gameboy suffered from pretty bad battery corrosion, but I was able to fix it after watching some YT videos, which then led me to seeing how relatively easy modding was, and here I am, thousands of dollars later lol. I've repaired a bunch of 360's myself - That drive belt is bad. They go bad very quickly as rubber likes to age poorly and stretch and weaken. You lubricating the drive basically just made it easier for the motor to drive it, allowing it to work again. Don't get me wrong, still a fix, but just a less permanent one. By the way, super bad jeebies for closing the case before testing it.

I own a Japanese X360 launch model, and I bought a PAL version of the slim (looked exactly like this one) to play games that were locked to the PAL region. Many of the X360 games were region free so I survived on my Japanese console. But Gears of War 3 was locked so bought my slim to play that. Unfortunately I was burgled and they took the slim console, but left the older fat console which I still have to this day. Had to disassemble it a couple of years ago due to the same issue - the drive didn't eject. Turned out to be the rubber eject belt that needed boiling and the drive itself needed cleaning (especially where the belt touched; it gets dusty and oily over time). Enjoyed the video!

One of the things you can do with a finicky DVD is to remove the belt and boil it for a couple of minutes keeping it off the bottom of the pan, this restores some of the elasticity so that it doesn't slip, or you can simply find replacements as the belt is often time one of the biggest issues with these. I RGH'd 2 then converted to RGH 3 on mine. I put a 2 TB drive in it and no longer have to switch disks and since I don't play it online as I have a Series X for that it makes for a better experience.

I hate that hidden tab. Apparently you can stick a pin through a part of the sticker to get it open. For my personal consoles I just bend the tab back so it doesn't latch when I close it up cause it's such a pain. Btw, one of the long black T10 screws holding the metal cage on may or may not be under a sticker. Most of the time it is. Also there's an X Clamp removal tool available on Weekend Modder that makes the process much safer and easier. It also puts all of the pressure on the heatsink and X Clamp instead of the board when reattaching the clamp. I strongly recommend it because it's easy for the screwdrover to slip out of place and gouge the PCB when removing or to bend the PCB when reattaching. 360's have pretty thin and flexible PCB's so you do not want to bend it. Also, when screwing the two screws by the power plug, make very sure not to overtighten them as that can flex the board. Some people have fixed E82 just by loosening those screws. That foam gasket is annoying but when finding a replacement you don't need one that goes all the way around. "Trinity" consoles have one that goes all the way around and Corona ones have just 4 foam points. It's more for vibration than it is for sealing. You can probably get away with cutting some standard form to make a few foam squares and then supergluing them into the fan shroud. Wow that 303 Aerosol really does the trick. Damn I'm gonna pick some up myself
@MachoNachoProductions2 жыл бұрын
That’s good to know. I may just get some foam tabs for the fan shroud. Also, thank you for all the other tips and tricks 👍 Cheers!
@themathocist2 жыл бұрын
You don't actually need foam to completely surround the fan. Some revisions only use three rectangular pieces of foam (about 1/2 inch long) to dampen the vibration of the shroud.

The only issue with those third party hard drives is that you can't use OG Xbox backward compatibility with them. Like I think the ones sold on the store work, but you can't use your discs. @@MachoNachoProductions you have to be careful when you do the delid. there are smd capacitors near the edge on 1 side. xbox 360 S and E doesn't really need a delid as they run cool and quiet compared to phat ps3s especially with increased fan speeds through dashlaunch or freestyle dash. I bought 2 kronos (jasper v2) xbox 360 for cheap and sent them to get the 1500uF and 820uF capacitors replaced with polymer caps too. i can't melt the solder with my hakko soldering gun. the person who did it said he had to use 700C. these 2 kronos xb360s are set to be reliable for years to come. with RGH3 and aurora dashboard, games converted to GOD format on the internal HDD runs like a dream. no noise from the dvd drive. I haven't tried a SSD but i'm sure with it, it would be the ultimate XB360

This is the generation where I started to get a little intimidated about dissasembling consoles.
@MachoNachoProductions2 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a bit more complex than some of the older consoles

Just trying to remember how to get it apart and looking at it with my wife while she held a flashlight, I pried the case apart (took 4 hands) she was amazed i can do this, but I have done it once before on another console. Of course I had completely forgotten every detail, forgotten I had even needed to do it in the first place, just another gizmo that stopped working I can easily fix with small dose of TLC. I am sure that MS makes these consoles INTENTIONALLY difficult to open. Simple maint and repairs are a huge money maker for them; and always upselling the latest console, they would rather you throw away your old ones!

Its like a brand new xbox 360! Only things I've taken apart is Xbox controllers. When i have time ill try this. My Xbox 360 is fine but i did get it second hand and i bet it would love some thermal paste. Thank you for this video! KZbin and people like you are amazingly helpful!

Great video! Just learned about 303 Aerospace Protectant. I've restored a couple of the fat model Xbox 360's and will be restoring one of this same model slim one soon. The disc tray issue could have been the rubber band is slipping. Easy fix by cleaning it or reducing resistance of the tray (like you did). Check out the 360 game Ninja Blade.

Great instructions on disassembling the system. This system definitely requires more patience and coaxing to open up.

Ooh, big idea for refurbishing - a launch 60 GB PS3 that has the yellow light of death.

Yeah, I need to find one. The launch ps3 are pricey. I have one that I bought at launch which thankfully still works perfectly

Would love to see a Vita 1000 restore. There’s not any screen replacement/body replacements that break it down like you do in your videos!

Will definitely look into that!

Tenchu Z is a great game to check out. Like a last gen Sekiro. Also if you like your anime stuff, Naruto had 2 Xbox 360 exclusives, Rise of a Ninja, and its sequel Broken Bonds, which still aren't backwards compatible with the One or Series S/X as of yet.

I like to slice that disk foam gasket with a razor blade right on the seam so you don’t have to remove and reapply it when opening up the drive.

Holy crap, look at the size of that fan! Microsoft was taking NO chances with overheating in the S. The Xbox 360 is great; you'll love it. Most of what's available is also on the Playstation 3, but there's an extensive digital library that features many exclusives. I would personally recommend Radiant Silvergun; it's an old Treasure shooter that runs so much better on Xbox 360 than it did the Saturn. I also like to tinker around with lost cause game consoles... often, they become even MORE of a lost cause when I'm done with them, but I've had a few successes. I replaced the screen in a PSP-2000 and cleaned up a GameCube that looked like someone dumped a half gallon of cola into it. (I hate to think what ELSE that gross brown goop inside could have been.)
@MachoNachoProductions2 жыл бұрын
Haha, Microsoft wasn’t playing any games with that fan 😁 never hurts to have a beefy fan 👍. I’ve played radiant silver gun on the Saturn, I should definitely look into it for the 360. Did it have a physical release, that would be awesome! We all have our successes and our failures. There have been a few consoles that were beyond me that I couldn’t save, but I always learned something from trying 😁 cheers buddy!!

To be honest one look at the outside of the console would also tell you that. With that huge vent opening on the top for the fan to directly spew hot air out of. It's crazy to think the original model didn't have anything like that. A few tiny vent holes sure, but not anything like a direct opening for the fan.

are you planning on revisiting the original 360 versions? i'd love to know about replacing the stock fans with something quieter, or maybe even if it's possible to upgrade the disc drive to something that is better and quieter, stuff like that. great video!
