I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

“Real” bar and chain oil contains ingredients that make it stick to the chain better than motor oil so the bar and chain will last longer and not get as hot. Used motor oil has contamination and has likely deteriorated from heat which don’t help your bar and chain life. Saving a few dollars in the short run will cost you in the long run...

@@johngrossbohlin7582 absolutely and you go to a farm supply and get their chain oil for about half the cost. I`m done with stihl. (have 3 of their saws,) I take it personal when I get screwed. In these coming times I expect it will take it`s toll on these pricks. I used to be proud to own a stihl.

I have seen it mostly on older chain saws and is usually age related. I see it all the time. Yeah, OEM parts only on a chain saw. Most guys keep a rag in their chainsaw box. Great tips! Hi Don, thanks for all the great info on your channel, I now do all my own repairs and rebuilds thanks to you. Own 15 Stihl saws and yes the new caps are a pain. Had the same problem on my 353 but wanted to quickly get it done so i cut a cylinder shape piece off a rubber clove and set it around the loose plug going in the body of the saw. Fixed the leak for a few months now. Ofcourse it is better to replace it for a original part. Mine was just something you do at home for a quick fix. Now i have that problem on a unused 357xpg i managed to get that has been sitting in a box for 9 years. My 353 was also around 13 years old when the leak came. Guess time just kills the rubber. With the Stihl caps once they are put on wrong they won't seal properly again. Make sure you live up the arrows and turn them gently. It shouldn't take much force to twist. I am not a fan of these but I have had to teach myself how to use them. You can also use a silver or gold sharpie to mark the cap and the arrow so it is easier to see when you line them up. The down side to that is you have to do often because the fuel mix and bar oil makes it easy to wipe off.

One cause of my oil leaking that my dealer educated me about is filling the oil tank up before putting the saw away. I used to fill both the oil and gas after every session, so that it would be good to go. He said not to do that because during the variation in temperature during storage, the oil will expand and contract, and if the tank is full there is no place to expand except out of the oil line. If you put the saw away partway empty, then there is air space which can compress and accommodate the expansion and contraction. Since I started doing that I have no more oil leak problems.
@Urbicide

I usually shove some paper towels up the the clutch cover to help mitigate the eventual oil puddling. I collected old chain saws for a few years. The old saws in the best condition were the ones caked with sawdust & bar oil. It's like chain saw cosmoline. If a saw is put up for an extended period, absolutely spotless, it is far more likely to suffer from corrosion. Never leave a magnesium-crankcase saw on a concrete or dirt floor.

Ahh, yes but that doesnt mean it is not a priority at all. You need to find the right vendor. My go to #1 aftermarket chainsaw parts guy is a Chinese vendor. His parts are equal or better than OEM stuff at a fraction of the cost. The only issue with using him is delivery time, but other than that parts are superior to what you may be used to from overseas vendors.

But I have a full Kombi set up, because it’s brilliant and well worth the investment. From day one of the pole pruner attachment, it’s leaked oil constantly. I’ve replaced the tootles cap a couple of times and cleaned out the the feeder line inc the sprocket area. It’s still leaks oil to this day. It doesn't leak bar oil at all. Has never leaked any oil. I can wipe it clean after using it and put it on the carpet in the back seat of my vehicle and my carpet doesn't get messed up at all. All my newer chainsaws leak bar oil to an extent with one that will leak all the oil out when put away over night.

Pull the pump off, get pump and hose super clean with gas/alcohol then reassemble with thin layer of gasket sealer at hose and pump connection. I can see why Stihl wanted to replace the oil and gas caps. After all, the old style worked great for about the last 35 years, so yes it's totally time to replace them with an over-complicated design. I can just see what's going to happen the first time most users can't get the cap off with finger pressure. They'll reach for a pair of pliers and snap off the little plastic tab on the cap.

Don, I need your help. I have a Makita DCS6401 I purchased sometime around 2005. That chainsaw now has a chain bar leak that pours out large amounts after usage. As soon as I finish a cut, clean the saw and store saw until the next usage. When I come back, I have a cup or so of chain bar oil saturated into whatever material the saw was sitting. I took my chainsaw to Home Depot and their repairman thought he fixed it but after a solid use of the chainsaw, I am guaranteed to have a pool of thick chain bar oil draining from the bottom of my chainsaw. Help! If I could ship the chainsaw back to the factory for repair, I would bc I love this powerful chainsaw. Thanks much, Don. (I too am Don)🙂 .

Do you prefer husqvarna or stihl for a non-professional ? The stihl dealership network seems a lot bigger in Southeast USA.

either, I don't like the smaller husqvarnas but i prefer their big ones. Stihl has excellent saws for the homeowowner

One thing I always do when replacing the chain, is to flip the bar each time, doubling the bar's life...And yes, those flip caps are a big source of leaks for me as well......

I have never had an issue but my neighbor doesn't like them and thinks they are over engineered.

@@christophermaurer1271 I agree with your neighbor...Stihl in general are over engineered. There chains saws are the best that you can buy, but are very expensive to maintain and repair.

So what is the biggest cause of the metal plate bending?
@scottfirman
@scottfirman 4 жыл бұрын
That would be caused by jamming the blade in a tree and twisting it out. A stick getting dragged into the chain, or abuse. I usually see more leakage from older chainsaws with hardened oil lines. I cannot count how many chain saws I see with plugged oil ports on the bar. It's as simple as removing the bar. I swear people are afraid to maintain their saws. They bring them in with burned warped chains and bars because they run them without sharpening or cleaning them out when done. I find so many free ones like that.

DESIGNED IN FAULT for extra income for the dealer. instead of usual channel within metal casting. STIHL designs faults in too.

Hope you can still work during the quarantine. I run an ‘essential’ business and can stay open. I have a feeling that equipments repair must be essential as well.
@donyboy73

yes it is essential here, however I only serve people outside. Any who don't comply must leave
@scottfirman

Yes but this state is saying Lawn care isn't essential. I think that's wrong and someone needs to challenge their idiotic rules. People count on lawn care businesses to maintain their businesses and private propertys.

@@scottfirman for landspaers is allowed here, but I'm not taking in push mowers here. mostly chainsaws for people who heat with firewood

@@scottfirman I agree!! Some people can't take care of there own property and businesses and other place's don't have time. Then the towns will fine people that don't manage their property!! If you are doing landscape work of any kind it is highly unlikely that you will be in contact with anyone. Your crew would just have to drive their own vehicles if you run a crew. Stopping lawn care is wrong. People just need to use common sense.

here in Texas lawn care guys have been running like normal. Seems like quite a few people are going back to work. Traffic is twice what it has been last couple weeks.

Wouldn't the oil tank vent let air into the tank? And if there was pressure it would be negative i.e wanting to suck in rather than push out? Or am I completely wrong? lol. Love the channel!

jeremy thiel well if it works & that's what the OEM says...well don't listen to me, I just can't see how that would help, even if your vent was blocked.
