Wow, this is an insane throwback. This was the family computer that I used to play TF2 and Minecraft on at a freakishly low framerate up until we finally ditched it in 2011 or 2012. The single gigabyte of RAM that someone put in it may have gotten windows XP pretty far back then, but by 2010 just about every program would run out of RAM constantly and would either slow to a crawl or outright crash.

Nice repair on the hinges. I wasn’t so lucky with mine on the same laptop as the metal was sheered off and couldn’t be mended. I have a couple of these laptops or should I say chunktops. Pretty good machines for the era. Thanks for sharing!

These early multimedia laptops had some incredible speakers. They don't even compare to even the finest modern laptops or the Macbook Pro!

This is because the thinner the speaker the worse it sounds, and since laptops are getting thinner and thinner, you may want some external speakers or a headset.

Laptops from this era are some of my all time favorites plus some are very easy to work on and upgrade plus they are generally better made so they can take a lot of abuse without breaking down.
@saladfox
@saladfox Жыл бұрын
Because the laptops are so bulky, they put huge drivers in (at least for a laptop). Modern laptops definitely have the advantage of fancy engineering tricks to get good sound out of smaller speakers, but for the time these sounded amazing compared to the barely-usable speakers included in most laptops of the era.
@MrKillswitch88
@MrKillswitch88 Жыл бұрын
@@saladfox To be honest the vast majority of modern laptops are crap with almost no options at all for upgrades and even worse repairability. Hell some of them are not even comfortable to use due to the poor thermals where it is easily 60c on the bottom panel while parts of the keyboard can reach 45-50c on some models under load.

holy shit that’s my first laptop! my parents had one from 2004-2011 and it worked really well until then, it had funny display issues where you had to hit the side of it to get it to stop pixelating what was on screen. i still have it however the charger is long gone and it got damaged further a few years ago when we were renovating
@saladfox

Sounds like the display cable is loose or damaged. Not terribly hard to fix- just reseat the cable, or replace it if that doesn't fix it. If it's your first computer, it'd definitely be worth restoring!

Very similar to my first laptop, and old handed down HP XP machine from a Gen older than this, ~2003. Loved that old thing with its fantastic huge screen and keyboard. Unfortunately that era of HP laptop had a recurring problem where the power jack would go bad very quickly, meaning the poor old thing was tied to a chunky docking station. I’m moving and couldn’t keep all of my machines so it went to the thrift shop today for someone else to fix up and enjoy.

I had this machine back in the day and it was heavy AF! Mine had an AMD 64bit CPU. But the same issue with the hinge happened around two years after buying it. Also, a small crack started to grow from the corner of the touchpad in the first few months. Pro note: Ikea used to have the mockups of these machines in their “office furniture” showrooms! 😅

Not sure what glue you used, but I think a metal adhesive such as JB-Weld might have been much better, as that glue is tailored for metal repairs. People have used it to repair engines for decades here in the US. I have 2 HP laptops from a few years earlier (circa 2001) & are related to the zv5000, that being the ze5170 & the ze5501us. Both of them were given to me for free from a relative. I did some repairs to the 5501 & used it as my main general-use laptop for many years & it still works today.
