Back in 2015 I put a 2.5" laptop hard disk on a roof to see what would happen. I forgot about it for A LONGTIME. Now, let's see what 5 years of rain, scorching sun and everything in between will do! #Wrecked #Laptop #Harddisk

Hard Drives aren’t actually Airtight, they have a small access hole (Marked Do Not Cover) to let air in and out when the Disk Spins, there’s a filter on it. But I’d imagine it would let moisture in over time if you’ve left the drive in the Rain.

I believe that some of the newest, highest capacity drives are helium filled (some of HGST's 10TB drives come to mind). However, 99% of hard drives that you find will have an breathing hole, and are not sealed.

Never thought a video where someone takes a good look a hard drive they left on their roof would've been this much fun to watch. It was defenitely interesting to see how bad the damage was to that hard drive after all this time, and it makes me wanna see more of these kinda videos from you. Restoring computers is great and all, but sometimes, something like this is very refreshing, interesting, and alot of fun. Keep up the good work, and I'm very curious to see what this old computer would be you were talking about

I am not surprised by what you found. Water has a way to get into the most tight of places. Good work remembering you had put the drive there. I would have forgotten, left the residence and then someone else would have found it. They then would make a video about a random drive on their roof.(:

Helium Filled Drives like the Helio Seal family from HGST/WD are intact air tight as they need the low pressure the helium creates to prevent the platters from warping and hitting each other while they are densely packed. When the seal is breached they either operate and an unusable speed or not at all until you get it serviced (the drive will state it’s status in S.M.A.R.T.) Great video, use to do hard drive qualification and verification testing, but never seen any scenario THAT extreme.

the 'clicking' sound of old harddrives isnt the heads hitting the case its the sound of the servo (the strong magnets/coil assembly for the heads) moving the head across the disk with very precise movements... one of these moves creates a 'tick' sound..

Hard drives are not completely air tight, this is because air pressure is created within the hard drive casing during operation. The remedy to this is a hole on the front of the drive casing, this hole to relieves that air pressure as the drive is spinning.
