Additional Rivatuner tip: If you hold CTRL while clicking the "add" button, you can easily add the game that is currently running to your Rivatuner application list. This allows you to make frame limit changes immediately, without having to search through file directories. Great video. 100% agree with your advice. Learning about 1% lows, frame times and frame caps was transformative to my PC gaming experience.

You need to limit your fps to 3 fps lower than your monitor refresh rate to avoid the input lag added by v-sync.

That's a good advice if you've already been around those FPSs. If you have dips to say 90s on a 144hz monitor, you'll have a much smoother experience if you cap your FPS to something like 95-100. It's always your 0.1% lows that determine the overall smoothness. Specially if those are CPU related dips which VRR cant alleviate.

Using a 43" 4k 60hz LCD TV without VRR for 3 years and very happy with it, my 6800xt runs everything I play at 4k locked 60. My next "monitor" (never buying a PC monitor ever again) will be an OLED TV 43 - 55" but for now happy with what I have.

Capping frames to max Refresh rate also saves power if the game runs faster than the monitor 👍

Also you could use Fast or Adaptive (if available) when setting V-Sync on in Nvidia's Control Panel. And like others have said setting this 3-5fps below your monitors max refreshrate is best. Tho setting at 1% low value takes care of that unless the game 1% is very close to monitors max refreshrate.

RTSS also does Scanline Sync, which is basically vsync, but you can do x2 and /2 there as well.

I found that in my case using RTSS to cap frames I get some lag. I limit fps in Nvidia control panel and get better results. Also ideal is to limit your fps to 3-5 fps lower than your screen's refrest rate. So for a 120HZ panel caping your frames to 116 along with v-sync in CP has best results. Good video for us gamers

Yes the RTSS method introduces lag, that is why it is useless in online FP Shooters and you limit the fps with the game-engine or the driver. Smoothing FPS you disable the control flow guard use the intelligent standby list cleaner for the timer-resolution and disable HPET.

I'll always cap my fps no matter what game i play. People who go "ohh my pc stutters and ps5 is way better" forget that console caps the fps to a sustainable framerate, as the same option and free control you have on PC. Figure it out

Tbh I still use RTSS for capping some of my games, mainly single player titles. Too many benchmark videos has made many ‘newer to pc gaming’ gamers think you need uncapped fps for max results in every title. As stated in the video, for single player using a frame cap like RTSS lock, can make a game feel a lot smoother and uncap your fps titles.

@@alrightfritz9692I guess, but since the launch of cs2 I’ve been playing on 144hz monitor with gsync and vsync both on and it’s so ungodly smooth it makes me perform a lot better it’s what made me research the frame time issue because I was wondering why the game felt so smooth at 140 fps rather than 400-500 fps lol

It also good idea to assign a keyboard shortcut to the frame limiter in Afterburner. Whenever I need to cap my framerate to 60 I just press the keyboard shortcut and job done.

@@Axolocl You can set the keyboard shortcut in Afterburner settings panel -> On-Screen Display -> Toggle frame limiter. Then you need to press the More button which opens RTSS panel and you set a global or per-app Framerate limit there.

FYI: if you still see screen tearing or stuttering when capping to your monitor's refresh rate, try setting the cap slightly lower. E.g. If your cap is 144, try 142.

@@WickedRibbon what so far has not been mentioned in the video or the comments, is that the to go advice as far as i remember from a couple years ago has been if possible to limit the fps in-game (fps cap), because that in theory (depending on the engine and implementation) would result in least latency, followed closely by rtss and nvidia driver in that order. so for the newer games then, are they just bad and incompetent or what is going on here

@@MerseYattle That is true, but only if the in-game cap is competent. Too often, the in-game cap doesn't actually lock the frame rate properly, so poor frame pacing can still occur. In those cases you're better off using RTSS - sacrificing a miniscule bit of latency for a massive improvement in smoothness.

No. A display with VRR can be locked at any FPS within the VRR range. Otherwise, you are limited to the monitors refresh rate. So if you could achieve 80 fps lows, with VRR, you can set to 80. Without VRR, you'd have to lock to 60.

@jovo9000 in theory that should work but I found out by testing that capping the fps to a number that isn't divisible by your max refres rate feels jittery on a vrr screen aswell.

@@jovo9000 what I mean is that if you have a 120hz display like I do. I can lock the framerate to 60 or 40 cause you can divide 120 with 60 and 40. That means the frame is showing two times at 60fps at 120hz and 3 times at 40fps/120hz If I lock the framerate to 45 fps that doesn't fit into 120hz , I get stutter even with vrr engaged

I’m pretty sure he was complaining about frame times. 60 fps with horrible frame times feels worse to me than 30fps with perfect frame times on like a console
