That's pretty incredible!! Same thing happened to a guy a number of years ago in Louisiana (where I'm from originally). A picture fell off his living room wall. When he investigated it...termites had eaten the picture frame. Wondering how the termites got to the picture frame....he noticed that his entire back wall was eaten up. Worked out good for him though...not long after finding out...straight line winds came through and put a tree through that wall. Insurance paid for all the repairs :)

You guys did great, what a perfect repair! My boyfriend just became a first time home buyer. He's a disabled veteran (thankfully is able to work for the call center at the VA). He gets some disability but honestly he doesn't have a lot of money. So our househunting took way longer than it should have with our limited budget. (I'm not exactly well off either but studying to get a good job hopefully soon, my point is: we broke!) So we find a cozy tiny 1 br home for 65k (in PA), with enough yard for a firepit, a front and back porch big enough to enjoy, and after so many steps he got it, woohoo! There was termites; key word: WAS. We have the Orkin report that they were treated, but the previous owner didn't bother to repair the "cosmetic-only damage". So he has the report that there were termites, they were treated, damages are only cosmetic. But it's got me thinking...especially when you said "find the source of the problem". Where the damage inside is most noticeable is around the doorframe (I'm not sure what it's called, it's where a doorframe would be if it hadn't been ripped out), in the middle of the house! Little jerks chewed all around it, some of the wood inside the wall looking like flakes! It's a 1 story house. The roof is due to be replaced soon but...water getting smackdab in the middle of the wall in the middle of the house. It's looking like 1. I'll be braving the tiny crawlspace (There's no way it's an actual attic) alone to survey any damages and 2. Maybe it would be wise for me to break up some of that wall to just be sure they didn't eat the entire thing. The natural wood boards on the porch; some of them don't look good and need replaced. It could very well be that it was all just old and neglected, but now I wonder that too... So basically, aside from the roof it's looking like I'll have to attempt to do a lot of this myself. Trust me we would love to hire contractors, but we don't have a lot of money; especially with the fact that we literally just bought this place. No joke, we finish moving in tomorrow. I'm not sure why I'm rambling on and on...I guess I just wanted to say thank you. Your content is incredibly helpful. And with the boyfriend having back and knee problems I know it'll mostly be me but he's a good cheerleader so I'll take it.

Oh jeez... I just moved into an apartment that has baseboards like that; I think they're more caulking than wood at this point. I've had two live ones land on me, before I knew anything about termites, and have since ID'd several other signs of termite infestation. After seeing how much work goes into repairing the damage and extermination, I know I've got a real battle ahead of me trying to get management to do anything about this.

wow that’s crazy I’ve seen some major termite damage in other houses that I also fixed and then some damage looked to be pretty bad and it ended up not being that bad but then I’ve seen on jobs where it didn’t look bad at all and it ended up being really bad hopefully they get your apartment fixed up

If you are still there, I would let your landlord know that if they get so bad that they result in structural damage; you (and other tenants) won't legally be allowed to live there and he won't be legally allowed to rent it out!

Nice job Darrell. Glad we don't have issues with termites here! Our house, like an awful lot of homes here, is two courses of 4" block on edge with a cavity. When I renovated I clad the inside of most of the external walls with 63mm insulated dry wall boards. I like the look of that tape you used, looks a lot easier to hide than the tape I used.

Thank you Dave!! Termites aren’t a huge problem here it’s mainly when someone has a water leak or moisture, but I like the 4” block idea that u all use. The tape I used is like a hybrid tape but it works very well and is easy to use you just got to wear gloves so your hands don’t itch from the fiberglass, other than that it’s great!! I hope you and your family are doing well and staying safe from covid and everything else going on in this word..

How would you do this if the exterior was brick and than vapor barrier? Plywood and studs need replaced? Same method just replace plywood and glue to studs?

I had some bugs eating away @ some logs on the main house also, nothing very serious, just 2 logs that i know of right now, but the thing with these bugs is that, they only eat dry lumber and only while its hot outside (like summer) and they don't go deep, just under the bark. after applying heavy oil coat the the surface of the log made them all disappear or die out (Y)

At 2:44... the thing you touch to see if its rotted. What is that called? I found termites in the corner of our garage and am slowly pulling out/off everything that is potentially infested and noticed that they ate through whatever is between the brick in the front of the house and the wood frame of the house. The thing you touched...I can see the brick through that now. What is that called? Sheathing?

About the new plywood going in how did you go about it did you just cut to old size and just fit them in and then put the new 2x4s and then finish foamed in ?!

I cut the old stuff out and used adhesive to secure the plywood to the concrete then foamed it

I am curious if the guy that sprayed (before you found live termites) was a big brand company and how extensive the treatment was. Reason I wonder is because I had a “big brand” company give my house the “Cadillac” treatment (trenching around the house, drill into the walls and applied foam , drilled into the foundation and treated and then placed about 30 stations around the house’s perimeter.) This was after I found a termite (one) under a three inch bubble in the knee wall near the front door. They also show me a couple termites under the wood chips ground cover outside a dinning room wall. I haven’t gotten up the nerve yet to start “exploratory surgery” into the sheet rock wall where the infestation was noted.

I found out the hard way once that a visual inspection of the top plates on your wall should be done before removing any studs or cripples house didn't fall down but I did say half a inch it sagged ended with temp wall and reframe lesson learned

Sucks when stuff like this happens, especially when the house isn't that old. Probably flashing at the top of the stone that goes up underneath the siding would have been the best bet, when the house was built. Neighbour down the street, the house is maybe 10 years old, they had to do the exact same repair, but from the outside, since on the inside they had custom wood panelling in their dining room and they didn't want to disturb it, luckily they found the problem when doing their home inspection and they got enough money off the sale of the house to build a big shop.

I once was painting a house and saw a tiny spot of rotten wood on a window sill didn’t look like anything bad at all…. Well it ended up being we had to rebuild almost that whole room on the house from termite damage it ended up being about a $16,000 job! The whole room needed to be reframed with new siding and windows, and you could never tell the extent of damage just by looking at the tiny rotten spot on the window sill

I used two 4x4s columns and 2x4 wing braces for my garage. Overhead door header was shot, the entire corner to the outside wall gone, about 11' of top and cap plate. All termites long gone, now repairing damage. For some reason, they left the trimmer studs the vertical tracks for the garage door almost untouched. Other than a few surface tunnels it's solid wood so I didn't have to remove the door, just the springs and cables.

Did you not listen in the video we’re I said the termite company was out before we started, and during the job? The termite company is who pointed this out to the homeowner so they treated the area before and came out during the job. I’ve done several other jobs for these people and have checked the wall and after many years… NO problems

It's truly unfortunate how many people watch a video like this and think this was a proper repair and who might try to copy the methods used. You're lucky the ceiling didn't sag when you removed that number of studs. The proper way to support the second floor and the roof was to use jacks or build another temporary wall. It's impossible to properly replace exterior sheathing from inside the house. The OSB that you put in wasn't attached to anything (adhesive? really?). I notice you edited out the part where you must have just bent over the nails that attached the stucco to the sheathing that had rotted away. The only way to properly do this job would have been to remove the exterior stone, properly re-sheathe the wall, replace the house wrap, etc. Screws are absolutely forbidden in load-bearing walls--and for a good reason. Screws have holding power, but have little shear strength when compared to nails. Sorry (not really) but this was a hack-job repair.

The ceiling didn’t sag because we didn’t remove all the studs at once and there’s really not that much weight on this portion of the house, the sheathing was cut out nails and all and new sheeting was installed with proper adhesive and was very secure, no nails were bent over. This repair has lasted many years and I still do work for these people to this day and there are zero issues with this wall, and if there ever was I would fix it as I stand behind my work, btw the insurance wouldn’t pay to tear out all the stone ect.

@@TheHomePros6221 Unless the building codes are different in Georgia, a building inspector would have failed that job in a heartbeat. The sheathing isn't just a barrier, it provides shear strength to a wood frame building. Gluing it to the house wrap and using a bunch of foam isn't the same. But hey, you do you and keep your fingers crossed.
