Well i now own the C55 in this video, all the lifters have been replaced, it doesn’t leak a drop of oil now after valve cover gaskets and a small gasket on the timing cover under the oil filter were replaced. Just installed black series mounts, about to get shift overlap valves in the valve body and blue top solenoids. Also just got a front bumper for a clk63 so the front end is getting swapped soon too, rear bumper is getting paint as well. It’s been a damn money pit but it’s been a great car to me so far.

I've been dreading the dog bone replacement job. Good to know it's not too bad of a job. Love my C55, such an underappreciated car.

@AutoAvids I was as well, one of the reasons I put up with it for soo long. At least it wasn't too bad and the part was only $8 so that's a win too!

thanks for the video! I had 1-2 noisy lifters/rocker arms I wanted to take care of. I took apart both bearing bridges and saw that almost all rocker arms where shot where they sit on their shaft. I found a couple small holes that where blocked by oil gunk and a main oil channel in the front of the bridge that was also closed by gunk. That probably caused the exessive wear. Cleaned everthing up and put it back together according to the manual MB provides. Seems like I cant get the lifters to fill with oil. My engine keeps making that horrible noise yours did after the first start up. I'm going to check oil pressure next, but don't think its an issue, because it was running fine before. How long does it take to quiet the lifers down? Almost regret changing them now...

Great work! The top end in my 05 E55 is a bit noisy sometimes in the "normal for an m113" way. This video made me way less nervous about doing a lifter job to hush it up. It has 181k miles but the last 80k miles it's had about an extra 100hp/ft lbs from aftermarket modifications.

@su1ac0 Thanks and glad this video helped! I am very much relieved that it does seem to be lasting now a few hundred miles later. Just finished up transmission this weekend so this car is driving so much better now and shifts perfect even when cold. The more things I fix the more I am motivated to fix everything in all the cars. I hadn't realized how all the little problems add up and it change my perspective on choosing this car vs driving the others.

The top end of your engine looks pretty healthy after all those miles. I hope it stays quiet for you! Good content

@Joe Demid Thank you and I agree, was pleasantly surprised to not see a bunch of sludge and such, I have now driven a few hundred more miles and its seems to be doing okay so fingers crossed it stays that way. Now with engine noise 90% gone I need to fix a small exhaust leak. Fix one noise and you'll hear another I guess.

Very well done! Cool to see the details on the lifters/followers. You are right about the VR valve cover gaskets, for whatever reason they are known to leak badly. Highly recommend trying out a sprintbooster to help the trans lag, tcm tune doesn't hurt of course but sb alone made absolute night and day difference on both my C55 and ML55.

@ANDERZÉN Thank you, good to know my hypothesis is right on the gaskets, I need to do my E55's soon. Good tip on the sprintbooster, I seen your video on it awhile ago, will need to pick one up sometime. Just finished up trans repairs last weekend and the C55 is soo much better now. Years of neglect really does affect performance.

Great work man. Be careful for work out harmonic balancers. I have to deal with this right now with my C55 and it’s not a common maintenance item people talk about.

I take it the timing chain tensioner should be removed whether you are working on the left or right bank lifters?

Can't beat an old toothbrush haha. And you're like me, always leave it cleaner than when you went in. The emissions pump - thanks for this part i'm literally going to open mine up this weekend to clean it up. Mines sounding very high & stressed compared to my other pumps in my wifes M272 & my old M273.

@Matty231 Right on, the turbine oil did make a pretty good difference, after a few days/cold starts it quieted it down a bit. I also sprayed electronic cleaner on the brushes/commutator as well to remove any excess brush carbon. Don't think I mentioned that in the vid. Also I am so glad you commented as I was watching your '98 E55 vids the other day and had made a note to add your channel to my page's recommended channels so you have reminded me, cheers!

This video helped my quite a bit changing my M112 lifters. Did you have any problem reusing the stretch bolts on the rocker arm bridge ? Mercedes wants a fortune for those bolts new.
@thelongranger55
@thelongranger55 11 ай бұрын
I would never think about reusing TTY bolts , maybe one day on a junk yard engine budget rebuild I’ll reuse everything possible just for fun , but currently I’m on my first m113 rebuild & I’m doing my best to shop around because I’m buying literally hundred of new parts & you can easily over spend hundreds even thousands of dollars for no reason on the same part on the same website because price difference. For what ? Nothing. unless the quality extremely better or the prices rise like recently for example. a thermostat on FCP was $34 now it’s $52 . So things like that are killing me because I was just about to purchase before the price hike . Instead I bought the $27 one from MAHLE/ BEHR only because the $21 Febi bilstein one ships in 2-3weeks . I’ve purchased from FCPeuro 36 A 1129901022 bolts @ $5.69 each . Then from LLLparts I purchased the two A0029909722 bolts @ $5.71 each The dealership near me wanted $81 each for those two alone . Im pretty sure I don’t have lifter issues now but My engine had 170k before I began so I’m on the fence about replacing all the lifters bow as a preventative measure before I toss them back in because like we said . These TTY bolts are expensive & hard to find so I don’t want to find myself spending another $300 on bolts again later on top of the already expensive lifters. . Im I’m definitely going to pop them out & give them an ultrasonic bath & inspect them before I make any more purchases. I have videos on the m113 rebuild on my channel & more content on the way with a total price breakdown . Stay tuned !

The oil canister leak is notorious with this motor. In the manual it is some large mm number. 1 1/6” sounds better somehow! 😂

Awesome stuff, very glad I found this video. Any specific torque specs for the oil filter housing reassembly? And man, I want to do the lifter job, bad ticking when cold, but I'm a little scared to. Thanks for the inspiration!
@BaldManMotors
@BaldManMotors 2 жыл бұрын
@Ben Patterson Thanks, glad you liked it! I found searching that the housing bolt 52 ft lbs and the cooler bolts 8 ft lbs. I would advice caution with those little cooler bolts, its very soft aluminum that they thread into and can be easy to strip for some.

@@BaldManMotors thanks! I'll be sure to use my 1/4" drive torque wrench for those and go super easy. Really looking forward to fixing those 3 gaskets. I've had them and the huge socket for at least a year now.

And with power steering - all my other mercs have never leaked but my C55 seems to loose steering fluid after a few months, so I'll replace the seal like you said as that may be the cause?
@BaldManMotors
@BaldManMotors 2 жыл бұрын
@Matty231 The seal would be my recommendation, the reservoir was around $21. The seal 0004661880 was not included so that was a separate $3-$5. I think if I had just replaced the seal it would have solved it, never hurts to replace reservoir as well as it has an integrated filter for the power steering, you probably know that though :) Other than that perhaps lines but if it is a slow leak I'd start there.
