Well since you called it out that people leave when you put up these kind of video's let me give some love. I really like these things. You can know all the stuff how to build a engine but if you don't know how the brains work. Well you still can't run the engine, and it's always more fun to know more. Knowledge is power they say :P

Greg, your videos have always been a go-to reference on how get Miata stuff done. I admit that before getting into MS, the tuning videos were hard to relate to. However, after jumping into the MS boat they proved helpful in getting started but I they only scratched the surface and and left out idle tuning, like the MSM video that only mentioned "did some idle stuff" I screamed "WHAT, WHAT DO I DO?". There are a ton of people out there fighting idle issues, every other day there is a post on the Facebook miata MS group of people asking for help. Go for it man, you make great videos. Don't hold back sharing knowledge just because a handful of people don't know the power of knowledge. Cheers

I do really appreciate the tuning videos. I’m trying to learn all of this stuff and it’s pretty intimidating if not explained in the right way. Personally I’m dealing with hot start issues and also an oscillating idle only when the car sits and gets really warm at a light.

Fully warmed up. Oil pressure should be about 10pm per 1000rpms. So idle at 10-15psi oil is quite normal. And idle at 60-70psi when cold is normal too. The oil pump bypass will set the max pressure at higher rpm’s.

It know you got your idle fixed, but I'd be kind of interested in looking into PID tuning for the VVT, boost controller, etc. As bad PID gains can cause similar issues with many things.
@TankRust
@TankRust 4 жыл бұрын
Great job Greg! Glad it was a simple fix. Cold start tuning can be a long process for exactly the reasons you stated. On top of that, a wide band sensor is usually not of much use during startup and idle, so a more trial and error approach is needed. I am curious if your closed loop idle control was trying to fight the oscillations with idle air duty or did it just make the problem worse? Keep up the great technical content!
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 4 жыл бұрын
I run open loop idle 🙂 very easy. Also my VVT PID settings were causing the target to overshoot during that startup which obviously could be tuned up as well, but just easier to drop VVT to 0 for startup
@TankRust
@TankRust 4 жыл бұрын
TheCarPassionChannel I’m an open loop guy as well. Never found the need for closed loop, idle is super stable. I think as long as you get the VE, ignition table, and WUE set up properly it’s all you need in mild climates.
