Fixing problems with SD cards, Printers with a Chromebook Powerwash, Files App

In this video, I go over fixing problems with reading SD Cards on a Chromebook. If the SD Card has an older FAT, then it may need to be formatted before being used. Connecting Printers to the Chromebook, and using Powerwash. I also open up and share that I have autism and some music that helps.

Now I just need to get that top row remapped to the proper function keys. Was able to do a few of them because they were already listed in the keyboard shortcut place. But I don't know how to really set up the ones that you have to actually type the whole function in to set the key. I'll worry about that another time I'm just glad I was able to fix those volume keys because that really was messing up my life! Hahaha! I really do need a delete key though and I can't get it figured out. Otherwise I'm quite happy with this modification and intend to buy another one because they are so cheap and I'd like to find one with a touch screen and repeat this process. Thank you for all you do! So helpful!

You may try other players from the play store to get it to play video. I use my Chromebook to play videos with "Gallery" but I have used VLC in the past.

Would you consider setting up a play list on your utube channel with just your Chromebook tips and tricks.. My R13 Chromebook has gotten wonky. I need to power wash it. I had to search a bit to find your very nice explanation of power washing. You have at least 3 different areas that you are doing: and you have playlists for the school stuff. So a specific for Chromebook tips would help me a lot. Maybe consider a playlist for your EV stuff which I also follow. Thanks

What about if my chromebook DOESN"T say SD Card as an available device.. it acts like there is NOTHING plugged into the SD slot. Is there a limit of type of SD card, I have a Micro SD HC class 1. Is there some cards that don't work with chromebook ?

I use the same SD cards as you described. 256gb. I am using them now on this Chromebook. Please restart the Chromebook and try again. If it still does not read that SD card, you may need to do a powerwash on that Chromebook.

The files folder is not showing me the ability to pin the file folder on right click. ???. This is on the CB515 same as your previous Chromebook. I have the files folder pinned on my Chromebook R13 . I didn't realize that I hadn't put in a sd card will be adding one to my CB515. Really like the music you shared.

The Files app may be found as seen in the video. Please click on the app launcher and key in the word, " files " It should show up. You will then see your folders. There is the downloads folder, which is where downloaded files are kept. Once you locate the files app , you may right click it to pin it to the shelf. Thank you for the questions and comments.

Is that SD card readable on a different computer? If so, save or move the data from that SD card to another one that works within your Chromebook.

I have a question. If you have converted your Chromebook to a Linux only machine and you have some of these bogged down kind of issues where you no longer have access to power wash (at least I'm assuming you wouldn't since Chroma West would be gone and you would be in a Linux only environment), would you have to go through all the steps of returning it to a Chromebook then doing the power wash then going through the conversion to Linux process all over again? I mean in my mind I'm thinking you would have to but I'm also hoping that there is a trick somewhere to avoid going through all that.

Got a question about this. Before viewing this video I had already did those suggestions. My problem is that I can't drag and drop my files to the SD Card, it gives a red circle showing I can't do that. I can drag and drop to all other sections. So question is is there a way to fix/do it???

Thank you for the question. Yes, you should be able to drag and drop, as I do it often on my Chromebook. I opened the files app and docked it on one half of my screen by using the Alt ] short cut then I right clicked the file app again and selected " new window" I then used the keyboard short cut, Alt [ to dock that on the other side of my Chromebook screen. I then dragged a file from the downloads folder to to the SD card. I did note that, if I float the file over recent, that I see the red circle. But on the SD car, it was green. So let's dive into the issue that you are having: The "red circle" issue you're experiencing could be due to permissions or limitations set by the operating system. However, there are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue on your Chromebook: 1. **Check File Manager Permissions:** - Open the Files app on your Chromebook. - Navigate to the location where your SD card is mounted. - Right-click on the SD card folder and select "Manage access." - Ensure that the "Access" setting is set to "Anyone with the link can view" or a similar setting that allows you to write to the SD card. 2. **Use the Files App:** - Open the Files app on your Chromebook. - Find the files you want to transfer. - Right-click on the files you want to move and select "Copy" or "Cut." - Navigate to the location on your SD card where you want to place the files. - Right-click on an empty space in the SD card folder and select "Paste." 3. **Use Google Drive as an Intermediate:** - Upload the files you want to transfer to Google Drive. - On your Chromebook, open the Files app and find the files in Google Drive. - Right-click on the files and select "Download." - Choose the location on the SD card where you want to save the files. 4. **Check File Formats:** - Sometimes, file format compatibility can cause issues with dragging and dropping. I want to pin "My Files" the top most level. If I step down the lower folder levels will let my pin. I hope that is clearer.

Oh... Sorry. Some areas cannot be pinned. Any item that you wish to pin, will have that option when you right click on it.

Is it possible that the SD card is too big? I have a 1tb SanDisk micro SDXC card, and my Chromebook can "see" it, but it won't format at all.

I wonder if your SDXC card is 'locked" Make sure the Lock switch is slid up (unlock position). You will not be able to format, modify, or delete the contents on the memory card if it is locked.

There may be an issue with the SD card itself. I would remove the SD card then insert it again. If it still does not see it, please restart the Chromebook.

@@Randomyoutuber403 This just happened to me on my Chromebook. I inserted the SD card and it did not show up in the files app. I removed the SD card, and inserted it again. After waiting a minute , the Chromebook saw the SD card. But why didn't it see it the first time? Was the Chromebook busy with other processes? Maybe.

If there is data or files on the floppy disc that you must have, you may purchase an ext. floppy disk drive to read it on a Chromebook. Please note that the Chromebook will not run a Windows program, but it can back up or read the data files, i.e. photos and/or music that was saved on that floppy disc.

I am formatting my sd card to fat32 on my chromebook but when I insert sd card, only audio works but video doesn't. No videos show even on all my sd cards I had taken with my Kodak camera. I've used the onn 32gb and a SanDisk 64 gb imagemate PRO and neither are working.

Thank you for your reply. I clicked on the file folder that came installed on my new hp chromebook, unless the file app is different. It shows the sd card was inserted and I click on it and it show a movie link (I believe it says movie) and it's a black screen with the audio.

@@BobaBear0 Yes, I have AVI files as well, but they play both the video and sound. I use the Gallery app to play those. You may right click the file and then select, "open with" to change which app plays the movie.

What file extension are the video files? I play videos on my Chromebook. Most of my videos that I watch are M4V.

Ouch. You can restore deleted data from a formatted memory card with the help of a data recovery program, like disk drill. You would run the program on a windows PC.

That is not suppose to happen. Try restarting the CB and removing and reinserting the SD card. I use this method on all of my CBs and the students as well.
