Hey, this is not a crap engine. Been trough many 3S-GE and 3S-GTE in MR2's and Celica's. Never had any problem with the hose from hell either. If you build a 5S-GTE hybrid with upgraded rods and pistons you are good for a quite a few ponies as well. If I am not mistaken the 3SG(T)E platform are quite popular to use in other cars and project for an reliable and strong base engine.

The engine was designed to be in a Celica. It’s easy to do the timing belt and the hose from hell with the engine still in a Celica. In fact, if a job takes an hour on my GT4, I assume it’s going to take 3 hours on my MR2T. I’m never wrong on that.

When my 93 MR2 needed a timing belt I took it to the Toyota dealer and they also replaced the serpentine belt, pulley and other stuff including the Hose from Hell as well as the Other Hose from Hell. They didn't have to pull the engine, everything was preventative maintenance and I don't recall the exact cost but it was not overly expensive.

Why not use a silicone hose? Its more resistant than rubber to all the fluids and heat , plus its more flexible and the cost is miniscule compared to the effort expended. The rubber hose may be OE but you can guarantee that Toyota shaved the last cent off the price. On this the price is not the issue, reliability is.

Toyota put a lot into r&d and building things better, take the hose joiners on the oil cooler and vvt line on the 2GR-FE they split and did Toyota opt for a cheap silicone replacement to patch it up on the cheap? nope they now make full metal units now so it neever happens again why do they manufacturers still use rubber? cheaper, easier to bend, easier to manufacture which all keep the cost down, Good fixing characteristics with metal, they have used rubber for a lot longer than silicone so they trust rubber to not leak or slip off iv used silicone hoses intercoolers and radiators, works great on intercooler pipes with decent T-bolt clamps (iv found you really need to clamp silicone hose down hard to stop it slipping off pipes), when it comes to my bikes i still with oem rubber hoses as i cant get big clamps on all the hoses, its a better fit and i can trust they won't slip off or burst while riding

Ant does not show the procedures like Edd did. This job is not so hard to do as he shows. This is very common job every mechanic is used to do. Ant just talks and talks and talks instead of really telling us HOW to do the job. It looks that somebody else has removed the components and Ant just lifts them off. Ant, please show more details instead of talking all the time. After that the new WD would give much more information to home mechanics. Remember why WD was originally made. It was a teaching program for home mechanics how to buy a car and how to fix it at your home shop. This new WD is more like those American muscle car building shows which are completely nonsense. Ant, I’m sure that you can teach home mecs if you just slow down and stop talking so much. You are a showman and that’s why it is hard but it would give us much more valuable knowledge. And when you don’t know how to do something or it needs special tools, do as Edd and ask the specialist to show it.

They wanted to dumb down the mechanical segments. Edd wasn't happy with that so he left. Basically what they have tried to do is to make a niché show mainstream. In doing that have hacked off the niché fans and still haven't attracted the mainstream fans.
@Fedaykin24
@Fedaykin24 5 жыл бұрын
The production company for the show changed, the new one 'Velocity' felt the mechanical segments were too difficult to film and wanted to cut them down. Edd didn't want to dumb the show down so left, in my opinion the argument of the new production company that it was too difficult to film was utter BS! The previous one had managed it for years, no I think they wanted to cut costs and make it more like other generic US mechanic shows. Far cheaper to farm out the spanner work and have it done off camera. I don't watch TV based car programs any more, they are all pretty awful these days. I have switched to watching KZbin based shows like 'Bad Obsession', 'Mighty Car Mods' and 'Motortrends' which all show the actual work being done on the cars in long form...you know all the stuff that this professional production company says is too difficult to film! Ironically Edd has setup his own KZbin channel and is producing new content with detailed long form spanner work.

To be fair to Mike; Wheeler Dealers was Mike and Ed ; Mike did the bits Ed couldn't be bothered with (sourcing the cars ; getting parts via his extensive network and selling the end deal) which left Ed to do the oily bits as he put it. It was a perfect partnership that made a great show . It just doesn't work without Ed it's just another Overhauling or Chasing Classic Cars . Mike should have followed Ed in walking away and doing a new show together. I think he'll regret the split. Ed will be back .

Its easy, take cat off from turbo, start by removing cat mounts from engine from underneath once exhaust is off, then turbo heat sheild, undo 6 or 7 nuts from cat elbow on turbo, remove cat temp probe and lambda, drop complete cat an elbow out from bottom, you can now get to oil cooler and change both pipes, while there do both oil seals on the oil cooler, one seals aluminium spacer to engine block black rubbery gasket, the second is an orange colour and seals the actual cooler to the ali spacer, job done, cambelt is doable too with engine in but you need to remove engine bay fan intercooler, air con tensioner and pully (compressor can stay on) enging mount and hanger cambelt end, blip crankshaft pully bolt using starter motor with dizzy disconnected, position ratchet in undo mode agsinst cross member literally a second on starter, she pops right undone, use trolly jack to lift engine slightly to aid removal of engine mount and hanger, drop engine to pull off crank pully (once timed up) rest is easy from them on, either replace tensioner or check its good and reuse, fit new idlers, change water pump but undo the countersunk screw first which is a pig if it won't budge you will need to take waterpump housing off inc thermostat etc, replace 2 o ring seals on hardline pipes that fit to WP housing, if this it done, its a pain in the ass but ive done it 3 times now on all of my sw20 turbo MR2s. Worst part is getting 2 x 10mm bolts out bottom of intercooler these hold the bottom bracket to intercooler and need to be undone ells it won't come out unless you remove A/C compressor.

Mike said Ed didn't want to keep taking out engines as "He's a TV star" which is bollocks. Forgot what Ed said but it wasn't that.

All this hate for Ant!! I’ve watched all the latest series up to date and the guy can wrench ( to use the ‘merican vernacular) He does quite a bit of metal fabrication, the mercury Capri bumpers were a particular triumph. Yes he is no Ed China, but he and Marmite mike work well together and make an entertaining programme. Bit of shame that it’s no longer UK based.

I don't mind either, Edd got too big for his boots and was dropped. Ant runs a very successful car restoration business and is good at what he does, as a mechanic, watching you can see how people handle tools, to me Edd looked amateur and Ant doesn't . I recon Ant and Fuzz from car SOS would be the best pairing.

Ant is good but the problem with him on the show was that his work was too difficult and steered away from the DIY format. I remember the first season he was on, he would drop the engine on every other car. Some of the viewers realistically can not do that. So it became a show were the we watched him do the work and not learning on how to do it.

I like this mechanic, becoz Ed always use new parts so the easy way, this mechanic fix some parts by himself.

Don't see why he didn't change the hose to a upgraded one that's more heat resistant... surely you want to save the headache of taking the engine out and changing that hose again

pretty poor description of the video. he isnt 'fixing' anything. he is simply replacing a hose (albeit a horrible hose to replace)

Bring back edd this guy is a good mechanic but lacks knowledge then contradicts himself saying the hose was a terrible idea to have placed there then later saying how good toyota are and he will use the same pipe next time. Makes no sense to me.

HotHatch Fan I noticed that too!! I honestly thought he was going to put some type of better aftermarket one after he said it was a horrible design and material, then he practically says he loves the hose and design lmao

It is very difficult to redesign such an assembly once it has been entered into production though... the best that could be done afterwards is to install a silicone hose instead of the original OEM item, which would eventually fail.

scott c my car had a recall for the rear trailing arm bushings failing prematurely, and they offered a metal insert to go in the hollow bushing and make it last much longer.. a mini heat shield around the hose mounted to the head or block would be a solid fix
