Thank you a million Spencer. I stalled twice in the drive thru a week ago after filling up. I was afraid it would be the idle control valve, then I found this video. I got the new breather valve from FCP Euro and installed it tonight. It’s idling perfect now and smoother across the whole rev range.

Spencer, as a BMW master tech retired M specialist your videos are spot on. I have really enjoyed them keep it up. You have found a very good technician. My car is a 2013 E-92 M3 which I bought new when my 2001 M5 had 150k on it. Only comment I would not use a worm clamp on valve as I does not apply pressure evenly around the nipple on valve!

In the owner’s manual. BMW recommends BP gas. The E92 93 has issues with the 10 percent ethanol. My 2 cents. I know this because I had the same issues. Keep up the great work Spence

Ive had idle issues on m5 e60 twice First time due to underdrive pulley 2nd time due to couplings on plenum squashed letting un metered air in If its purge valve or fuel cap its generally when u fuel up Replaced both of those and charcoal cannister also

Only thing you need to concern yourself with is if the mileage is a lil high and if the previous owners replaced the rod bearings. Also the typical coolant system overhaul.

I have worked as a tech for 17 years. 9.5 with Mercedes and the rest with Audi. This issue is common but Mercedes and Audi put the breather valve in a more accessible area for DIY. Also, you can reuse the clip if you take it off correctly or use a zip tie to secure the hose. The tech's explanation will save people 1.0 hour of diag and this video for a DIY will save another 1.0 hour of labor. At my dealership that repair would be $350(diag, labor, and part).

That would be a first I have never seen the purge valve cause a fluctuating idle in my 14 years as a bmw tech. Spark plugs and air filter lid installed incorrectly have seen that before. You should be able to hear the valve on startup if it’s ticking it’s working if not you have a check engine light on.

My E92 335i does this and won't let me fill up past half tank. Tried the fuel vent valve and dmtl pump with no luck. I'm pretty sure it's the charcoal canister causing the issue on mine.

My car does something similar on start up where the rpms would begin to fall as it should after a startup but then it would jump up and then come back down before settling at idle. Sometimes it get so bad as to where the car almost stalls but rite before it stalls it would “catch itself” and the revs would increase back to idle and stay there and there would be a weird slight vibration throughout the car but the revs wouldn’t change but you can like feel the car shake or something. Any ideas?
