Thanks guys for this video, it really helped. I am working on a 2005 Mazda Tribute 2.3L with 198,500 miles. Your PCV valve retaining clip removal technic you suggestion was spot on! Don't try to pull, twist or dig it out with jewelers screw driver as shown on other KZbin videos. A extended (bent) needle nose pliers on the back and front (90 degrees from the two viewing holes) of those ridges pop's that ring right out. The only thing I broke on this project was in disconnecting the 1/2" vent line retaining clip ( "C" shaped) located after the throttle body. No one has a video on that under this topic.

Thanks for posting this video. This was my bible this weekend. Took a bit, but I got the intake off. Next will be the valve cover as I found 2 spark plug drowned in oil. Could see some oil in cylinders 2 and 4 as well after I pulled the plugs, so I imagine I'll need to pull the head and clean it out. Thanks again.

Great Video. I recently had to do this on an 06 Ford Escape and found out this applies to a host a vehicle that have the 2.3L engine. In fact, the procedure is the same if you have a 2.0l or a 2.5l as they are all the same block. Speaking from experience (that I now have), do yourself a favor and remove the radiator as it speeds up the removal and installation. By removing the radiator and with the intake off, you have greater access to the water pump, hoses, PCV and many other things to check on while is open.

I'm wondering if it isn't worth having to refill the refrigerant and just removing it all to get access to this stupid intake.

Thanks so much for doing this video. It saved me a ton of time! Even still, it took me 3-4 hours (DIY). My 2005 escape w/ 167k had a collapsed hose with huge cracks completely though. The PCV was clogged up, too. A few thoughts:-Disconnect as many electrical connectors in the way as possible before tackling the bolts. The electrical connectors took me longer than the bolts!-I did take off the fuel rail, and didn't take off the throttle body (same as vid)-I easily removed the plastic clip holding the PCV on by rotating it counter-clockwise with a pair of small channelocks. I'd still recommend a replacement clip and o-ring if you can find one.-O-rings on those two difficult bolts for reassembly are a must! (thanks!)-I didn't remove the dipstick. Thanks again!

I have a Ford 2008 2.3 hybrid. On this model, you can access the center (difficult one) bolt if you remove the serpentine belt tensioner. To remove the bolt, I used 2 extensions with one swivel. I used a zip tie and pulled it tight just beneath the 10mm socket on the first extension. I used the zip tie because the rad fan was in the way and gave me something to pull through the opening on the manifold. Getting the tip of the zip tie through the hole was easy. You can then reach through the intake manifold via the hole where the tensioner was and grab the zip tie, pulling the socket/extension through. You can then attach the socket to the bolt head with the same hand. Duct tape helps if the 2 (extensions) sections keep pulling apart. I have very large hands and was able to do it.

Thanks for the video, it was a big help. I worked on 2005 escape, don't struggle trying to work with such limited space. Remove the passenger side cooling fan to have better access, it was so much easier. Also I did unbolt the PS pump except for the one bolt under the line, I just loosened that one. Then moved the pump over just a bit to get to the manifold bolt.

Thanks for the video. Similar PCV hose / PCV valve setup on Ford Focus models with Duratec (Mazda) 2.0L, 2.3L engines. This is s real PITA job for to repalce a maintenance type item. . Look at the Focus videos and write-ups too . Shame on you Ford/Mazda for designing and producing this kind of crap. Stuff like this is why Toyota is on top.

I did the same job on an 08 Ford Escape 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive 2.3 dual overhead cam non hybrid. It is aggravating to do but it is doable, if you're a little familiar with working on cars, most importantly, stay calm lol. Look at the back of the part online so you know how many bolts you're looking for, general design of & general placement. After taking it Loose once at the neighbors I found it at a junkyard, with the "radiator and grill gone there was so much room" it was easy to take apart. I had luck with the PCV valve grommet by grabbing it with a pair of comfortable to the hand pliers. I was able to get the grommet moving clockwise counterclockwise, lifted a little with pliers while inserting the left tip of a small screwdriver, using the edge of the screwdriver allowed me to use it as a wedge, so as I rotated clockwise counterclockwise I was able to slide more of the small tip screwdriver into that Gap leveraging it open slowly, once it cleared the clip I went to the other side, and successfully cleared that clip as well. my biggest tip would be to remove the radiator & front grill, that allows you to see the entire face of that intake manifold and the hidden Bolt that's hard to get to in the middle of the intake, looking up into engine for two bolts 2 wire clips + 2 Star head connections that hold the oil dip stick was disorienting with disconnected wires and hoses everywhere. Replace the water bypass hose that runs above the PCV valve, left hand side has a metal nipple right hand side has a metal nipple that is very deep in the engine to get to, I got a kitchen knife with a long narrow blade, scored the hose several times then Twisted the hose to get it loose. You're there. If that hose goes out in another 15 to 50,000 miles you get to do the job over, not a yeehaaw. If you're in a place where you can afford the 20 bucks for that hose I'd strongly suggest it. Patience is the word of the day. Your mainly going to use 8 mm, 10 mm, different pliers, and the star head name Escapes me. 200 bucks I replaced the spark plugs, tune up was the origional intent, valve cover gasket, intake manifold, intake manifold gaskets, PCV valve, and water bypass hose. the quoted fix time for a PCV valve in that engine was between 6 and 8 hours. Putting the neighbors Engine Back Together, I wasn't able to take the radiator and Grill loose, I was not going to freak that poor woman out. If the car was mine I would definitely take the radiator and the grill loose couple of bolts that are easy to get to, saves you incalculable frustration. Like black clouds parted & Angel's sang. The reinstall kind of sucked but doing it twice I know what to do where I was going. The biggest thing is my pendemic kindness saved that lady a lot of money. I charged a 10th of what Google quoted for the PCV valve and tune up labor. after running to the junkyard and to the hub as I found broken parts I think I broke even. 🤣😂🤣😂😭😭😭😭 Good luck mechanicing.

Thank you for the video. It's one of the best I have seen for such a tight spot with real hands on tweaking. Thumbs up to your helper who was shining the light when your hands were full. Tool and parts info was very helpful too. Maybe I will get a little helper when and if I tackle my 2.3 L Ford Focus PCV valve. My car seems to have a vacuum leak somewhere. 152k miles and it sputters when accelerating. I have changed the Fuel filter and plugs with no difference. What were the symptoms before you started your job?

Great video. Got to love the crap designs of newer vehicles and the stupidity they make mechanics jump through to do a repair. Worst designs with the metal radiator hose running behind the intake manifold. They rust out and leak and is a large job to replace unfortunately

Just did this job on my Mazda 6 today. Same 2.3L engine. For this job you should definitely invest in a 10mm 1/4" drive magnetic standard size socket. It helps immensely with the center bolt but also helps with all of the other bolts. No worries about dropping them or any need for o-rings or other tricks.

Anothe thing I found that makes it easier is to remove the dipstick from the bottom where it attaches to the motor and just pull the whole thing out from the engine with the intake, just make sure you pull out your measuring stick and break the seal from the o-ring on the motor. If you do it the other way you will have to buy a special tool since that bolt is torx and it's also almost impossible to get to on the Escape's with how far forward the engine is put in the bay. Another suggestion would be to get a 1/4 inch kit that has both shallow and deep well. A life saver tool when I did it was O'Reilley's has an extendable magnet with the last section that can be bent and held in place. BE CAREFUL when you take the injectors out. If you are not planning on replacing any injectors at the time I would almost suggest just removing them from the rail. The little bit of fuel that comes out is nothing compared to the headache of when the little plastic seats break as they get very yellow and brittle from gas and age and mine was only 8 years old at the time, I also lost an o ring since it went flying when the injectors popped out of the engine. If I could do it over again I would have left them in the block, that being said that is how I found out I had some bad injectors, so if you want to look at them then take them out but be extra careful.

Thank you for taking the time to do the video. I bought my daughter a 2005 escape and it is running poorly. Air leak coming from under the intake manifold. I think it is the hose for the PCV valve. My mechanic wants to replace the entire manifold. Way to much money for me right now. How much would this repair normally run at you shop and what do you thin about the manifold being cracked. Please get back with me when you get a chance. Thanks again! Terry

Doubt it is cracked, guessing it is like a 4 hour job, 200-300 bucks labor maybe..Once it is off you will see for sure, either cracks in manifold (doubt it) or bad vacuum hose at PCV

Sorry in Oregon, in this day and age if you have concerns about whoever is doing the repair, you should feel free to ask them to either send pictures when they do find the problem (crack in manifold)? or ask them to save the old parts, so you can see for yourself what was wrong.

Fixing cars and stuff We moved out to Dallas from Portland in 2006. We lived there for 18 years. My daughters car will run good sometimes and then the power will just go away with nothing when you hit the accelerator. And it will just take off and run semi normal and will be fine. A day or two will go by and then it will just stall at the light. I only give you this info to see if this is a classic example of a vacuum leak or symptoms of something different. Thanks for all of your help with this problem. It is really appreciated. Thank you! Terry

Great Video and perfect timing for me. I have a 2005 FE hybrid, and a mouse chewed through the PCV valve hose, and the IMRC wiring harness. What a pain to replace. The service manual says to remove the Throttle Body, but you didn't. Seems like it wasn't necessary. Do you still think it was not needed? Thanks!
@fixingcarsandstuff

Well I guess if i did it without it, it isn't needed, but sometimes removing more things, makes it easier. Sometimes you need to decide how much you want to fight with something, or work in a tighter spot.

Fixing cars and stuff I left the throttle body on, and was able to get the manifold off without to many headaches. My hybrid is tighter between the manifold and fan than the tribute, and I ended up taking one of the radiator fans out to get to the "Hidden Bolt". That made things much easier. I used your O-ring trick when I put it back together. Worked Great! Thanks again.

Hi Terry thank you for yours videos are great support. Please help me with one question: I have a ford focus 2.0 liters model 2008 (europe), when start the engine the check engine light start and the scanner results are P2008 doing reference to IMRC actuator valve (this model have 2), others codes are P0135 and P0141 both do reference to O2 sensors 1 and 2. The car not run wild, to achieve is very slowly tilt 2500 rpm aprox. After is correct its function and its response. The fuel consumption was increased since 9.7 liters/100 kms to 13.8 liters/100 kms. Suddenly the gearbox that is automatic and manual only works in automatic although you select manual position. Here in México only is obtain the intake manifold complete, not the actuators valves and is very expensive to me 800 usd. Nevertheless I prefer buy the intake manifold complete what drive an car slow and fuel highs consumptions. Do you think that this change resolves the problem obviously the part of the engine performance or you recommend other way to resolve the issue? Thank's for your help me

One thing that really helps on these is to remove the belt tensioner. If you do that you can get a ratchet inside the manifold to get the bolt that hides under the center of the intake. You can also fit your hand in it so it is extremely easy to line everything up and it should be much easier to put the bolt back in without the o ring, which could cause sealing issues or flexing of the manifold. Additionally you are able to remove the far left bolt far easier with the tensioner off. The PCV valve clip is easiest to remove with the oil separator that it is connected to removed. Just remove the 8 bolts and pull it off but be careful about damaging the o ring because I believe that only comes as part of the full kit from ford which is about 45 bucks.
