I do handyman work, and your videos have helped me a lot. I like you you used what you have to cut the 2X4's and plywood. Many times, I have gotten to a job site and forgotten a tool like my sawsall. It was too far away for me to go back home, so I made due with what I had.

I do a lot of home repairs myself and often times when I go to a hardware store and ask questions , I’ll get strange guys asking me if they can help or the store wants to refer someone to me. I can do things myself. You explained this so well and great advice on the endoscope. I didn’t think of that. I feel confident that I can make the repair in my home. I bought a house where there was water damage in the kitchen. I can do this. Thanks for the video

This will probably never cause an issue but i would have just cut back to the next floor joist to make it so the old floor and new sit on it 50 / 50. I would use hanger brackets for the new joist since they do not rest on a permanent support like a pier block or foundation and I would never depend on the sheer or support strength of a screw or nail .

I have some extra OSB 1/2". Also I read some of the comments saying I would have. This is true and its ok, but when youre in the business a while you know each craftsman may have a preference for something I/we didnt think of before. I had to stop saying I would have, and say hmm let me learn how you are doing that? Its a wonderful thing to learn new skills and ideas to solve problems. And this is a difference between a Craftsman, and a Manufacturing process person, the MFG has a set way that must be followed. The Craftsman has the skill to apply proper methods as they see fit, there are Many ways to do one thing... we all know this but when you work on something one way for 10 years and someone does it totally different in front of you and it hurts? change the I would have to let me learn what youre doing there.

nothing. Also he could have reinforced the middle long beam to the near side temp beam. Extra weight support as the drywall type of support is NOT structural. Its ok, its near a wall, but if this is in a high traffic area, it would be too weak

Thank you, this is very helpful. We have a spot in a bathroom where the floor rotted and toilet fell partway through the hole (a beam prevented it from falling all the way). It was patched with mdf but not supported. Additionally, the adjacent plywood that was there before feels a bit squishy (I think its bc it lacks support underneath. This method of putting a frame in looks like it should work. We also have a spot where a joist was cut all the way through (by previous owners) and that needs to be fixed as well.

Awesome video I'm getting ready to do this by my front door. I have two questions: instead of measuring can you just use the old piece of subfloor as a template to trace out and cut the new one? Secondly are they 2x4 supports you installed mounted to anything on the wall side or just sitting there? Any insight you can give is very much appreciated.
@FixThisHouse
@FixThisHouse Жыл бұрын
Hi! For the first question the answer is yes 👍🏽. Just make sure you flip the piece you are tracing to the face you cut from because the cut end tends to be small due to the cut bevel. 2nd, you will need to secure the 2x4 or 2x6 to the floor joist especially if this is some that will be stepped on due to high traffic. Each case is different. In my case I can get away with the edge secured from plank to plank with joist support on the middle because this will be this will be located on a non traffic area which is under my kitchen sink area. I hope this finds you well and gives you help! Thank you for watching! 🙏🏽😊👍🏽

HI very well done video. I have a problem now with a sub floor and water damage, so all I would add, I want to prevent water damage so can the wood there be painted with some Danish Oil? On one sub floor the entire bathroom has to be totally removed and all wood replaced. the joyces seem to be only slightly damaged by water but the tub will have to come out, etc and its on the 3rd floor, whats underneath is the kitchen. Sad. The drywall in the kitchen ceiling? was looking strange, paint peeling? then a hole. then a 2 foot section fell to the ground, now its a 2.5 x 4 foot section of drywall ceiling that rotted and fell. All because next to the tub the water collects in that corner. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

I'm wondering how didn't your wall didn't collapse since you removed the subfloor from one side, and there were no perpendicular joists to catch the load. I think its a pretty dangerous tutorial since people will be cutting off support under their partitions that go parallel to the joust. I have to do the same thing, and ill be doing it sequentially 16" at a time. Cut a small piece, put support under. Cut another piece, put a few more.

Yes! You need to check under before making deep cuts. He explains this at the 1:54 mark. If you don't have an endoscope, use a stud finder or only make the cut the depth of the subfloor (1/2 or 3/4 of an inch in most cases). Create a small square in the center of your intended cut and get a flashlight to see under the subfloor - also, be careful not to cut through your floor joists.

You obviously know what you are doing. Your work is nice too. But for people who don't do this for a living the videos are out of focus, not all but enough, and the back of your head is nice too but it isn't why I'm here. When you speed up the video to push through it would be nice if you would first show what tool you are using instead of making us guess because the tool isn't visible under the floor. The first part of the floor replacement when you are making a box with 2x4's and screwing them in to (sit on?) it would have been nice if you showed exactly what you were doing because I watched over and over and still don't know what you did and why. Like I said, you do wonderful work but you say in the beginning it's not for first timers so we don't waste our time trying to understand and see what and why you are doing whatever it is you are doing. Thanks for the video and I'll be back when I'm more experienced.
