We are traveling to the second highest plateau in the world after Tibet, the Puna region in Argentina. Getting high in altitude with our Land Rover Defender, how high? Find out in the video.
This was one of the greatest adventures we have had in our lives. We see many vicuñas, llamas and Ñandus.
We start next to San Antonio de los Cobres. But we need to stay one more night at the same altitude as we are feeling some altitude sickness at 3700m in altitude.
After filling water and diesel and having some delicious lunch, we set off and drive in some of the most impressive landscapes. We climb sometimes up to 4.560m over sea level and continue down to salt lakes again. We drive next to 5.000m peaks that look extreme. We arrive in Tolar Grande where we manage to get more water and diesel. We continue to Salar Arizaro and then see the Cono de Arita. A weird-looking perfect cone in the middle of a salt lake.
We cross a gold mine and climb up in a breathtaking environment until we reach Mina la Casualidad, an abandoned mine above 4.000m. We spend our first night ever above 4.000m in altitude and we realize we have some trouble breathing.
We continue up, yes! to another mine, Mina Julia, absolutely incredible.
Enjoy the Ride!
