The question is still being asked all the time, and it surprises me the answer is not more well known.
So here's an indepth guide why you sometimes bounce off when you try to GB punish a parry attempt.

You maybe should have mentioned the GB vulnerability on GB startup. I get a lot of people asking “how do I get GBd out of MY GB?!” And they don’t know that they can still counter. Anyway just a thought.

Tein Meizeshi yup you can counter it. Best practice is just to double tap GB so that in case you’re unlucky and they GB at the same time, you’ll counter.

I don't think you can counter it 100% of the time. There are times I get it to work and others it seems that I'm stuck eating a gb. That could be because of lag. The system reads it as my gb attempt first then his so his hits me when I'm vulnerable in a gb recovery. Idk

My friend asks me this literally every time. I explain every time. He asks again next time. For those still confused, when it feels like "we both did a GB at the same time, but his won for some reason, Ubi hates me," what's actually happening is the following: you decide to input a GB. Between you have the thought of inputting it and your finger actually pressing the GB button, your opponent presses his GB button. It *looks* like you both input GB at the same time and they should clash and bounce off, but your GB loses. In actuality, you could have countered, but before you realized what was happening, the CGB window had expired. If you're asking why your GB input didn't simply counter their GB attempt, that's because GB has 200ms of startup time (IIRC, might be 400, but either way), so while his GB is 'on the way,' you are inputting a GB of your own, although his lands first. If he inputs a GB and you were intending to input your own, but you input it after the startup time of his GB, you will counter. Moral of the story? Pick Raider and run the slippery feat. Always.

Tip: You can increase chances of getting a GB from feint if your guard isn't matching the enemy's so it adds a 100ms to his attack due to guard switch.

I had this theory before and when I tested it I would consistently get hit by certain attacks but also consistently GB If my guard wasnt matching enemy's. Maybe I did something wrong and the test was off but those are the results i got from it. There you go an idea to do a quick test of.

Thank you for the new video, I always understood this and and kinda learned who not to feint into gaurdbreak against, but it is good to have this video to show friends so they can understand. You're videos have always taught me new things to use in for honor which allows me to practice and has been able to expand the playability of this game for me due to it's rather simple presentation. Just a suggestion, but you should consider making videos on things you could add to the game or what you could change. I'm sure people would love to hear what you would like to have in this game. I'd especially love to see it, because it seems you are down to always let this game have more tech and allow for it to have a higher skill ceiling. Anyways, once again thanks for the videos! Nice topic ! So much details to discover about For honor mechanics. Serial months later :I don't know if you would react to this today but I wanted to speak about the switching guard and how that influences the guard break timing. Like you can parry even if you're not at the same guard as your opponent ignoring the time transition to switch guard. But if you do so, and that was a feint into a guard break, the time you switch guard before you Land your heavy will be counted.

Hey, great video Freeze. I would just like to add something you didn't mention, Feint into GB ALWAYS catches someone who feints his own parry attempts. Feint into GB counters this 100% of the time and its what I use it for mostly. It may be worth adding to the video since its one of the first things you can learn about an opponent and then apply directly for results.

vnllaa im sure it gets a new vulnerability based on the speed of the oos atk. I didn't test it but that is my experience while playing

OOS attacks that are below 1000ms follow the same rules as non-OOS attacks below 1000ms, and all attacks longer than 1000 ms when thrown OOS are 100% guardbreak-able, following shugoki's case. In particular, Centurion's and Gladiator's heavies and Orochi's top heavy can be thrown OOS without being guard broken for example.

not really, with raider all you get from oos parry is light into zone, with an oos throw you could get more with a wall. But that's not the point they can also dodge the zone instead of parry and you would have to have some amazing reactions to gb on reaction to a dodge in time to catch them in recovery ever since the updated dodge recoveries. If i could just feint into gb to catch both options then that would be far better than having to guess whether they will do nothing, parry, or dodge.

Here is something I found helpful. If u feint gb in the same direction you'll more than likely get hit, but if u feint gb in a direction that their guard is not in you'll get the gb, try it in practice!

Do you have a list of exceptions to the speed-to-GB-vulnerability rule? Warden's unblockable top heavy for example seems highly resistant to GB (more so than its speed indicates).

I hope you see this comment. I’d love to see a vid explaining the punch through property. Not like legit punch through to kill. Like when an enemy attacks you when you’re out of stamina and can continue his chain even if you block his attacks. This also happens if the enemy activates revenge. Orochi is really clear with this. If you are out of stam he can go through his entire light chain, and I think aramusha can too. A video would be very appreciated my friend. Thank yoh

Awesome analysis. I'm really surprised that 800 to 1000 ms attacks are subject to players reaction. Have you ever seen a case where you want to parry a heavy (even as early as possible) as Warlord, Highlander and it does make the opponent bounce off ? Consider Raider's ZA or any heavy from zerk in a chain : I'm really surprised to think that if I were to parry it super early, I wouldn't be guard broken...

I got two GB questions, maybe they can be answered here? The big one is (and this might just be a lag/latency thing): why is it when I am part way through my GB animation my opponent can begin their GB, but instead of cancelling each other out they win and get a free GB on me? I can't get out of it, I've tried. It tends to happen a lot when I play lawbringer. I'm also curious why it is GBs can track a backwards dodge that starts at the edge of their range, given how short the reach on a GB usually is.

GB is a dodge punisher so even if you dodge backwards, it tracks you. Seems weird but it's rather important to work like that. You first problem might be due to latency or smthng...

What about the GB that people initiate 'almost' at the same time and then one of the 2 'get' the guardbreak and dont bounce of off eachother? Its completely random if the person who initiates it after or before the other person. Haven't found anything consistent. What I did found is that Orochi has a higher chance of GB'ing people that do this than other characters. If people GB at the same time, especially if the other person activates it as a "counter GB", both should bounce off of eachother. Annoying.

each dodge attack is different. you have the min. dodge startup + the differing vulnerabilities of the attacks itself. you can GB them all, just for some it has to be insanely early, while others (like zhanhu's or warmonger's) can be GB'd rather late

Addition to your guardbreak video and video request: Hey freeze, soo I'm a Shugoki Main, and I noticed that it's possible to still use shugokis hyperarmour after heavy feint for a guaranteed guardbreak, if the opponent goes for the parry (no matter if crushing counter, parry, or optionselect parry. It's just become crazy hard since season 5, since his passive hyperarmour does no longer work like the revenge hyperarmour (so u can't GB through an attack) and it needs lots of practice and experience with all characters. It is however possible, to wait until the attack intended for the parry/counter hits u and then use the recovery window after that attack, to land the guardbreak (so u basically need to know all recovery timings for all attacks and - and this is the really hard thing- know when the attack ends and the recovery phase starts, so the gb vulnerability window opens up again, to consistently pull this off). Since Shugoki is still in a very bad spot, that knowledge makes him a little bit more viable and gives u the option to play more aggressively by working with feints, so it would be great if more shugokis knew about that. Talking about this technique - Maybe u could help me help all Shugo-fans and spread this message, by making a video that shows this technique and tells people about the most important timings when the attacks end and the gb vulnerability windows open up (most important are heavies and option select heavies) :P Trading gb against normal heavy-parries is the hardest thing, since they have really long active attack (= gb immunity) window and in some instances a very short recovery (= gb vulnerability) window, before they chain into the next attack (some chains I get the feeling don't even have such an in-chain gb vulnerability). It would be so awesome if u could make a video about that, and a big ray of light for all the poor shugokis out there waiting for their rework ;) Thx mate

Can you reaction gb a heavy on characters with the standard heavy punish timings? I'm guessing you could but it would be very unreliable as gb from feint is a planned action to catch characters starting an attack. On the other hand, you mention 400ms to gb and the vulnerability is less than that, so on second thought. You probably can't...

Parry timing on that move is late on the move so you can actually react to it (if it takes too long just parry, if not do nothing) Same as raider side heavy into stunning tap, you can actually wait for the change.

Too much of a risk to try a guard break, maybe a fast 500-400 attack if you know that she is going to make that move, otherwise you eat a lot of damage. So i wouldn't recommend it at all.

My only question is...why isn't the game talking about guard breaking? I can't remember anywhere in game explained that you can guardbreak any attack. All that it says is that guardbreak is used to break a guard but you bounce off of attacks. And then you go into multiplayer and people are throwing you left and right and then you try it and boucne off and you are like "wtf is happening" until you kinda figure it out trial by error style.

So GB only use is countering other players gbs now? Now this just seems to hurt mix ups? I Dont understand why they would do this..

I thought the Gb bouncing off of another Gb was a distance kind of thing Like if one player uses Gb out of range and the other one still reacts to it and ends up moving into range Also, does a Gb have Gb vulnerability of its own or am I just seeing things?

but thats bot true what you said about shaman and her soft feint, a hour ago i was against a shaman sho did the exact same thing, i tried to parry her soft feint into gb and her gb went through my attack

option select means that 1 input covery multiple options. In the example in the video, if you input a zone attack to parry, that beats a feint to GB.

What i think is broken is the kensei top heavy, you can bounce off of it while still allowing time for the kensei to hard feint it and free gb you after. It's not game breaking, the move is not interesting damage wise most of the time, but still, if you bounce that should mean he commited to the attack

Maybe you will cover this later in the video but what about when it seems you both hit gb at the same time and one will be overwritten? This happens to me all the time on console and really pisses me off. Lol. Anyone else notice this?

I'll just add that wardens unblockable top heavy is one of the exceptions to the rules here. Its 1000ms but has the same gb vulnerability as 700ms attacks.

a hard feint is when you press the "cancel" button (B on xbox, O on ps4, E on keyboard). this resets you back into neutral. a soft feint is when you can press another action in the middle of something else. Like Raider's heavy into stunning tap. he only has to press light during his heavy swing to change the move. And the example in the video is heavy soft feint into GB, that a few characters have. They dont need to press the cancel button, they can just hit GB.
