He didn't even use any of the good ratios with sulfur...all the ones he used in pt 1 and pt2 IMO is to much sulfur and the AL ratio is to low. 70/30 is ok but it tends to be sharp and higher pitched unless it's a large salute with strong confinement and even then there are better formulas out there to bring the thunder

Now the m-80s were much louder you got to remember you were setting them off on the ground and your gun is elevated giving it a better chance to reach the sensor. You even had most of those m80s in a hole. M80 for the win.

I've wrapped M80s I've made with fiberglass filament tape in crossed directions and noticed a distinct increase in sound. Flash creates report much like lightning creates thunder, the reactants are two solids, the products are also two solids. I realized how much heat was made after doing some below ground tests which create a cavity large enough for my hand. A very warm cavity in the ground

I would suspect that the deeper the crater the more the sound will be suppressed. Also the ground itself will dampen sound and would vary quite a bit from one site to an other. I would think that placing them on a steel plate would be better for testing. The steel plate may contribute to the volume but it would be the same for all the salutes tested. I have observed that hanging the salute from a tree branch increased the perceived sound.

Plastic plugs or hot glue become a projectile,paper plugs and white glue are all that's required,that's what the original m-80 and silver salutes used,flash powder is not like black powder or gun powder,all it needs is a millisecond of resistance and it detonates,big difference

@@shannonking3201 I’ve never seen a large salute in person before until New Year’s Eve. The only thing I’d seen before was an m80. It was 4 inches long and had 20 grams of a 50/50 mixture of Potassium Perchlorate and Magnalium. Not sure about the construction of it. Car alarms were going off all over the place. I can’t even fathom wanting anything stronger than that. It put out a decent flash too.

I regret not testing 3g vs 5g as well. I'm under the impression that a small air gap will aid in efficiency, and prevent a "blow out" I'll be sure to test 3vs5 in my next video. Thanks for your input.

I spent half my younger life experimenting like this. Years ago. I found the best performance when I tamped the powder into the case. I would fill to the top, tamp the case to compress the powder, fill to the top again and tamp down, and fill one more time. Then tamp once more to make room for the craft paper plug. More powder equals more air expansion on the explosion.

Sorry for the late reply... The db's mic/sensor picks up on the deeper pressure wave, as it is technically still sound. I'll admit, as far as what I heard in person, it did not "sound" louder, It just "felt" louder. That being said, it's still loud as all hell and safer to work with (relatively speaking).

Hey man just a suggestion to supercharge any of your flash mixes. Add in some Bullseye Smokeless powder after you make your flash. It contains 40% Nitroglycerine and the flash will detonate it!

@Metal1USMC Yeah, before the market went crazy I mixed some 50/ 50. The secret is a huge airspace. I only put a teaspoon of each in a 2" tube 3" long with plywood plugs. I pre drilled the side for a fuse. Glued in one end. Put the mix in a baggie with the fuse. Tie it shut with string. I used needle noses to push the fuse from the inside out. Hot glue it on the outside. Then glue in the other plug. The second secret is called spiking. Run string around at 1/4" spacing. It is glued on with paste. Then, cover with paper. A quick alternative is fiber shipping tape. A note for the ATF. This is meant to be used as an aerial salute only. Making explosives in the USA is illegal.

This is a bullshit rumor,the nitroglycerin in smokeless powder is formulated to not detonate but burn at a controlled rate for use in cartridges,it doesn't do anything mixed with flash powder but burn,and flash powder doesn't need to be super charged as you say,good flash powder is truly impressive

Oh man I love this test! Can you do one with larger salutes next time please? I Currently run the classic 70/30 but I want some extra "thud" in my salutes. When I buy salutes from the stands, I think they run a different flash powder because it smells different, has a deeper bass sound, and sounds louder for how much smaller they are.

It is either your Al or your KCL04 that is subpar, Or it could be both! If you start messing with other formulas you could actually end up making it more sensitive, That is not a smart idea! I can literally wrap my mix in a paper towel and have it boom!

Some people swear the addition of sulfur changes the tone of the "boom". I'm talking kclo4/AL. Never mix sulfur with chlorates. But some people do add 10% sulfur to their pot perchlorate based flash and swear by it but if your chems are high quality.. (mainly the aluminum) then it's hard to beat 70/30.

Guarantee they are using the 65 kclo4/25 dark AL/15 sulfur mixture. The aluminum is what matters the most it needs to be flake and At least 3-5 micron. Eckhart 5410h or India blackhead is what needs to be used.

Can you try one using the 70/30 mix and add Alliant Bullseye smokeless powder? Example recipe is 70g potassium perchlorate 30g dark aluminum and 100g Bullseye. Scale down as needed. Supposedly Bullseye is Nitro Glycerin based and really adds to the BOOM.

When it is milled it is mixed with charcoal. This coats the newly milled Al so it doesn't oxidize as much, and has more energy.

Have you ever tried bright aluminum 400 mesh ? When I used to do this type of thing, I had awesome results with %70 perc %27 Al %3 Sulphur. But that was long ago.

Just for simplicity you should stick with a 70/30 KClO4 to dark aluminum (Indian dark or German dark is best). Some other flash powders can be very sensitive and are best to stay away from.

I go with the Fatty Arbuckle mixture 70 30 10. 10 grams antimony trisulfate 325 dark Pyro. Gives it that extra Edge. 112. And that's what four grams and each solute.. Guaranteed to satisfy. I know they say keep the batches low. but I always go with a hundred gram batch.

I was debating using double paper ends glued in each side to see if it helped with the thud on 7g of 70/30 in a 3/4" x 2" tube. I would be scared to do a "shake and bake". I thought this stuff was extremely sensitive.

70/30 KCLO4 aluminum is a pretty stable mixture. Adding sulfer to the mix makes it less stable but more powerful. Be cautious when making this stuff and be smart

You gotta try TPA Flash. The bass is unbelievable especially the bigger you go with the salutes. 70 perc 10 Al 10 TPA and 10 Sulfur for a 100 gram batch. Its allot safer too. #11 though is a favorite too because sulfur is so cheap.

Hey my brother my dad made 100's of grosses in the 60's 70's 80's and he mixed different kinds of powders that would flash and exploded. Not so much smoke. Black silver and a white mix with a little bit of corn hull bits mixed in and boy nice boomers. Back then 10 cents a piece now 2 to 4.00 per m80's and hard to find. But there out there. Leonard Villalpando I just used the American Dark and was concerned that I purchased the wrong powder, HOWEVER the result was shockingly good! Also, I had 1gm left over so I folded it up in a piece of paper, then wrapped it in aluminum foil. I expected just a blow out and a puff of smoke, but it blew up with authority! Made me respect that composition even more..

You did yourself a disservice by not mixing the flash before. I can understand not wanting to, but if your going to mix in the tube, at least mix 5% of the Al with the PP through a screen. This will help stop the PP from clumping and the rest of the Al will mix better. My favorite way is to screen 5% then diaper the rest until it's mixed well.

Sound is shockwave, pressure etc. The stronger blast, the bigger the "sound" or dB. BUT humans tend to percieve high frequencies louder. So a deep and hard boom may not sound loud, but it is in fact high dB. As for your question, i think the gunfire dont have much shockwave, but is very loud as it is high frequency.

Well have to say good ol 70%-30% wins in my book as it being very simple, probably the safest to handle as being stable has a very good shelf life etc.etc. Also its up there on the decibel level meter. I dont mean to make it sound like its totally safe as it is not and has to be handled with care after all it flashpowder!!

Flawed experiment. Putting the m80 in a hole makes more sound go UP instead of towards you as they would sitting flat on the ground. The last 8-10 you lit off should have been much louder.
