I only use Continental Competition 25mm and rim tape custom made by 3M for a UCI Carbon wheel maker in New Zealand, which results in perfectly seated tubulars. The key is a bit of sealant. Simple punctures are self repair immediately. I bring a small pump to inflate soft tires after a puncture. They’re the same pressure when I get home. Most of my tires wear out.

Thanks. I rode with tubulars for my first summer in 2023. I have been somewhat apprehensive about my first flat. I do carry an extra tire, and thank you for showing how to get it a little smaller (it's in the same configuration that Panaracer sent it to me in, which is about 12" long, folded three times). I'm really enjoying the feel of the tubulars on my '63 Grubb. I run them at 130psi, and even tried 140. I was pleased but a little surprised to hear you say I don't need spoons. I think I put three layers of glue on, and am hoping I can get the tire off easily.

I haven't had a flat with my tubulars yet from the day I switched in February (touch wood, hope I am not tempting fate here). Only yesterday I did 170km on mostly rough to very rough UK roads. I used to carry a size 20 spare tyre in my jersey pocket, but recently on the last couple rides I ditched that and just carried a bottle of Tufo sealant specially formulated for tubular tyres. I think that 99% of the flats I have ever had with clinchers was due to either hitting a pot hole and the tyre bottoming out and the rim pinching the tube, or riding on courses in urban areas, when I commuted to work, where there was a high likelihood of lots of glass and metal debris on the surface, which I don't do now as I can work from home due to covid, and ride only in quiet rural locations. So, yeah, overall very happy with my decision to switch to tubulars.

I have a pair of very light clincher aluminium wheels, thinking of buying a tubular rim set of 50mm because of the weight saving (1080gr) my only consern is the flats.. not about of what to do when flat, but the cost of the tyres, you have to pay double the size compare to clincher, (but as I'm thinking clincher tyre + latex tube could be the same) Also is the gluing thing,... Do you glue your tyres or use rim tape?
@waynosfotos
@waynosfotos 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelnrg11 check out my linked video at the end of the video, I show how to install a tubular with tape. Glue is a bit of a pain, I won't lie. I would start with tape, once you get familiar, with fitting the tyre, then if you want try the glue try then. With glue you need to apply thin layers to the tyre and rim seperately and allow to dry, two or three coats, allow to dry inbetween. Then put on one wet coat and mount before it drys. Then leave over night before riding. Bit of a process. Tape is super easy, doesn't smell, and easier when replacing next tyre.

I’ve always use singles, and of course I just strap them underneath the seat and all is ticketyboo, I did prefer the old mastic which would stay pliable for a good while and then you’re able to relocate the spare tire on the rim and it will get you home without rolling off of course, anyway that was really informative and I enjoyed it. Great one! I’ve just turned to tubular tyres, enjoying the ride quality👌 I folded my spare as shown, and it’s no bigger than a packable jacket in the jersey pocket. All I did different was to add sealant when I mounted the tyre, and it saved me on my first ride on a coarse chip country road, just kept pedalling. However I found that CO2 canisters freeze up the sealant and cause it to leak again until it thaws(10 sec or so). I just carry a small air pump now...👍🏽

The thing is that the weight you save from the tubular rims, you take it back with the extra tyre that you have to carry, I want so much to buy a tubular rim for all the pros but for me the downside is that you have to put your hand deep in the pocket for the price of the tyres that you have to buy, the cheapest tubular tyre is 20 euros and if you want performance you can spend 70 euros per tyre, for clinchers you can buy two 5000gp with 70 euros
@waynosfotos
@waynosfotos 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but you can buy a number on special and get them at a reasonable price. I also argue, if you are riding premium bikes, then your bike is worth or devaluaing faster than any tyre prices. So only a small cost really relative to the overall cost of cycling.

Thinking of running road tubular after CX season on my race alloy tubular wheelset when CX tubular comes off in late winter on v brake CX bike. The comfort factor on the local rough roads should be worth it. Still have to buy a clincher set for back up or for the wider 35-40mm tires for general mixed surface riding. I had success repairing punctured tubulars. Was racing on a shoestring, so I used repaired tubulars for training (never in races!). The bike shop would save punctured tubs from customer bikes for me, and I picked ones that were not badly holed or sliced to do surgery on. I vaguely recall making patches from pieces of latex inner tubes from unsalvageable tubs, and gluing them on with vulcanizing cement. I used a "Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl" (still available on Amazon!) to sew the tire back together where I had cut the stitches. If it ended up with a bump in it, I just threw it out: hadn't cost me anything other than time. But if I were doing it now I'd definitely try sealant instead!

I think not. The plug relies on a single wall of a relatively robust tire casing. I don’t think you could plug through a casing into a soft pliable tube. Compounding the repair is the fact that a flat tube within a tubular won’t be pressing against the casing so the plug couldn’t reach it. If that makes sense?

@@andyeunson270 no darts and worms don’t work with tubs. But tubs don’t suffer as badly from knicks as tubless tyres do. I don’t use tubeless any more as the frequency of punctures was far higher than tubs or tubes tyres. In fact I’ve got a tubed gatorskins that has cuts all over it and not one flint has penetrated the tube. I know this because the tube got muc off sealent in it and there is no sign of a seal. If this tyre had been tubeless I would have had at least 4 roadside punctures. My mates all run tubeless and they have far more punctures and reseals than I do. We had one ride where 8 of us rode past a cut hedge there was 3 tubeless riders spraying sealent all around before eventually sealing at around 30psi, I rode through with no drama on tubes my other mates had no drama 2 on tubs , 2 on tubes and 1 on tubeless we must have been lucky.
