I have been using tubulars with double tape exclusively for the last 5 years. I go on long rides and I do not even carry a spare, only the pit stop from Vittoria foam sealant in case that a flat. No more clincher or tubless for me. They ride amazing, last longer, less flats even with really low tire pressure and are very easy to install and replace. You should give them a try.

@@MrMars121 with the vittoria spray we are speaking of , it's for after a puncture. sealant for prior the puncture exist but i think nobody uses them on tubulars because, if you ride tubulars , one of the big properties of it is weight , they are around 200gr lighter than normal clinchers so , ruining this advantage with sealant .... if you fear punctures a lot , go with clinchers tires. If you still want tubulars , go with the continental gators , they are reinforced ;)

After a lifetime (50 years) of riding clinchers, 5 years ago I built up a classic steel Colnago with tubular wheels and fitted tubs using the tape method as shown in the video (although 60 psi is too much pressure for removing the backing tape, as you demonstrated). Five years on and not a single puncture despite having covered around 20,000 miles (yet I still carry a couple of spare tubs just in case!). The ride quality is sublime (on Veloflex or Vittoria) and I have confidence to descend and corner at high speed. The tyres seem to last longer and are impervious to the bits of road grit that find their way inside clinchers and cause most of the punctures I used to have.

Can i put sealant directly in tubular tire even im not puncture or i will put sealant the time im puncture only?
@chrisjames19242 жыл бұрын
Tubs are definitely best for safety and ride quality/speed. Removing tape from rims can take hours if you want a really clean rim. Also, tape for carbon rims is 4 x as much for no other reason than Velox arbitrarily decided their previous tape was all of a sudden not compatible for carbon rims and made you buy a new product instead - that costs 4 x as much. Needless to say I still use the ‘aluminium only’ tape, as does almost everyone I know.
@Bikes-guitars3 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer them when I’m riding in the mountains for safety, a flat tub stays on the rim where a punctured clincher will be off the rim way before a rider is able to slow the bike, an accident at 50-60mph descending could be life changing if not life ending, and with products like Vittoria pit stop or muc off B.A.M a punctured tub is usually soon reinfected and sealed without even taking a wheel out of the bike, then there is the feel of them, the bike feels more alive on tubs, not to mention the huge weight saving of tubular rims, around 200-300 grams of rotational mass making it accelerate better, brake better and handle better 👌
@GCPerformance183 жыл бұрын
yea for sure this is the better option for saftey, but for where I am at an no high speeds like that just self propelled flat roads there is not as much worry

I got experience at that, I was just before or on top ditching beacon when a guy said I had a flat but didn't think at the time, went down hill at 43-63mph forgot speed I reached with flat front as I had tubular and no way to sort it, also London to Brighton, I had this stupid woman cycling just beside me, she didn't move over enough so I had to go to the right of a bollard in the road so at 27mph with 30mm carbon wheels and 22mm tubular and carbon frame I had to squeeze in a 6" gap, so know bike cost me £4k and was not insured What I hate most is in London and Brighton you go on green, on rest of the route they tell you to go through red

I love tubulars. The ride is simply nicer. I have very few issues with flats, and since trying the Donnelly cross-sized tubulars that use tubeless construction, I have zero issues with mounting them straight or adding some sealant if I ever do get a flat. I haven't yet, though, so aside from the admitted pain of gluing, I'm 100% happy.

I've been gluing tubulars since the late '70's. Aside from the method of gluing/taping, a common theme or lack of theme to be more precise I've noticed on this subject while watching videos on this platform is the inattention to the subject of preparation of the tire/rim prior to the installation. Tires need to be dry fitted to the rim. This is the opportunity where one can see how the specific tire and rim interface. Does this tire fit the rim contour properly? Does the base tape around the valve sit and seat properly into the valve stem hole and sit flat down onto the rim without creating an elevated gap and hump? Is the integrity of the tire intact? The tire should be inflated to desired riding pressure and observed for a day or two to make sure there is not a leak from the tube nor stem. Is the casing warped in any way and is the tread fairly true without defects? Once this has passed preliminary inspection, then the final installation may continue. If one continues to use the same tire/rim combo, this process can be accelerated a bit. If a defect is discovered after a tire is glued/taped, the manufacture warrany is void.
@81caasi3 жыл бұрын
A tubular flat tire is less common (no pinched flats cause the rim shape has no edge like clincher rims). And since the use of sealant, in case of a flat, just put some sealant in through the valve core similar to tubless, and it will seal itself, easy. Todays tech is pretty good expensive clinchers can have a supple ride, however the ride quality of tubular are a special thing: silky smooth and fast. Because of the different shape of the rim you have more feel of the road, and they're lighter (less rim material) and therefor faster for acceration and better for climbing. Totally worth it if you don't mind learning a new installation process which is no big deal. I have tubulars on all my road bikes, one tubless setup on my CX bike, and clinchers on my everyday work bike.

thanks so much for the info!!! yea I mean tubulars are a nice tire and feel super smooth but not worth it for the average consumer who dont want to deal with it

Hello, are you still riding the tubulars? Has anything changed?
@FrankTraupe5 ай бұрын
l‘m using tubulars as long as I ride road bikes (about 10 years now). After I had three rim failures in a short row with carbon clincher rims on my mountain bike (one rim got wider in one spot, two rims broke… not catastrophic though) I decided go tubular with carbon rims on my road bike. Especially as I use rim brakes. The combination of a heated up side wall and the pressure of a non tubular tyre (with or without tube) is frightening to me. Over all I made good experiences. I use Tufo tape with different tyres. It’s easy to apply as seen in the video and about anybody should be able to do it by themselves. Changing a tyre is way more work than just changing an inner tube or changing a tubeless setup but if you have a bit of experience it’s a job of may be 2 hours. And yes: You do get the Tufo tape of the rim just by pulling it off and, if you want to be über-correct, you can remove residual glue by tapping the removed still sticky tape on the residual glue to take it off. I never glued with cement. For me tape is superior because 1) you don’t have to sand the carbon rim before you apply the tape 2) it’s clean 3) it’s faster (the whole cement gluing process takes some days if done properly) 4) you can go for a ride right after the work is done (at least if you use Tufo tape) So as long as I use carbon rims, especially in a rim brake setup, I‘ll use tubulars and Tufo tape. If however I was using ALUMINUM rims like my wife does I’d use clincher rims with regular tyres and a superlight tube (like Schwalbe Aerothan or Tubolito). The safety aspect mentioned in comments above might be relevant for racers going downhill with speeds above 60 mph… a normal rider should be able to stop safely if you feel your tyre is going flat. Usually tyres don’t explode… So for me it’s more or less a question of the rim material and the brakes you use. And if you’re into that thing: A tubular wheelset will always be lighter compared to a clincher set… rim or disc brake. And just a small tip: If you have the time you should mount your tubular tyre on the rim without any adhesive, pump it up to 100 psi and let it sit over night. Take it off, apply the tape on the rim as shown and put the tyre on again (as shown). Like this the tubular will slip on the rim easier and it‘s also easier to get it straight before removing the plastic liner and finally fixing the tyre.

I have to disagree, run tubulars all the time, they are significantly lighter and safer as the tyre can't leave the rim. They also can be ridden on a flat tyre slowly, i have done it for 5km. Only negative is the tyres are a little more expensive and harder to get, but i keep a stash. It is really easy to change a tyre with tape. For flats, sealant can fix a flat or just rip of the tyre and stretch on a new one (carry a spare tyre). Don't need any glue or tape to get you home. Just don't scrape the pedals. Lol

That is a total myth. They are even more reliable than clinchers as you don't get pinch flats and tube rub flats, (tube folds) You can fix them with sealant most of the time, if not, stretch on a new tyre. You can fold a tubular so it fits in your jersey pocket. They are a safer and better system. Yes clinchers have got better, but they still do not have all the benefits of tubulars. The biggest advantage with clinchers is they are easier to get and cheaper for the tyres.

The only thing that always got to me when running Tubes was the fear of heading out and getting a puncher and ending up at the side of the road having to make the call "PLEASE COME GET ME!" Tubes are great fast safe light but not the most practical unless you have a car following you with a spare set 😅😅😅 (Have my set of Campy Bora Ultra Two’s now on the wall might not use them that often but just can’t let go of them either!)

You can simply ride a tubular flat home. The tire stays glued to the rim, so the the rim is protected.
@joelyons886 Жыл бұрын
@@jjschmiedlin8813 those of us with decent rims and OCD would cringe at the thought of damaging them though 🤣🤣🤣 I just love inner tubs now won't go tubless as it's not "there" and unfortunately as I've gone rim to disc tubless wheels that i had have been sold, damn I miss my Bora Ultra Two's 🥲
@jjschmiedlin8813 Жыл бұрын
@@joelyons886 You wont damage them by riding a flat. Just dont hit a pothole. As the tire deflates it covers the rim completely. Even when you turn with a deflated tubular, it still moves to cover the rim.

If you can’t glue your own tires on you shouldn’t be riding them. Learn to do it and be responsible for your own glue job. Effetto Mariposa Carogna is easy to use but for absolute security Belgium tape from cyclocross world plus glue is the best.

I love gluing the tires, i have a blast doing it but to be honest it was one of the guys wheels hear and we didnt have any glue in stock so we just used the tape because he didnt want to wait lol and hes not racing lol
@billmaidment56233 жыл бұрын
@@GCPerformance18 I have nothing against tape. I feel it’s important for tub users to do the job themselves so they know it’s done right and know how fix when they get a flat. Most shops don’t have people that are experienced installing them.

Only need to wait 24 hours for the glues. The adhesive tape doesn't need to cure.
@GCPerformance183 жыл бұрын
okay good ot know I would think they would have to have some kind of wait time but I have also installed glue on bikes for customers who just ride home casual right away
@waynosfotos3 жыл бұрын
@@GCPerformance18 yeah, now that i wouldn't recommend. It is basically contact cement they use for fitting kitchen laminex. It needs to go off. I would doscourage that for sure. If they had a accident they may try to blame you the installer. Something also to be aware of over time, a year or so, the glue can become brittle and the tyre can roll off as it is not soft and sticky anymore. It takes a year or two for the glue to get brittle. I would also recommend people to re glue every year. I know people use their tubulars as race tyres for years because they do so little miles, and don't re-glue for years and years. Not a good practice.

“ DEEP SECTION “ not “ DEEP DISH “. Deep dish refers to cars that have flat inside recessed/ deep mounted with the outside rim then creating a deep dish. Great video though thanks
