The shape of the earth is not a Science method question. The Scientific method deals with cause and effect relationships not shapes. For earth to be a sphere the ground has to be curving away at some point correct? Now what we grow up believing is that the Horizon is that place. We're told that the curve is why we can't see all the way across the earth. What if you had knowledge that the Horizon is caused by optics including visual angles and field of view not earth curve, and this is why you can't see across the earth? We can prove that the horizon is not Geometric physical earth curve. We can also demonstrate that objects shrink in angular size with distance making them too small to resolve. It's not about the truth to them, it's about being right about some "cover-up." A real scientist would follow the evidence of their data and conclude, "Oh, our hypothesis was wrong," not "Well, we want our hypothesis to be right, so any data that contradicts it will be tossed out or not acknowledged." I found a comment that made a great point about why people like flat earthers believe in dumb conspiracies. (Not my words) "Its just existential dread. They cant stand the idea that they might not be important to the universe when it comes down to it and these conspiracies give them a reason to believe that they're part of a big mission that will ultimately give them importance." And honestly I agree. Ive noticed that most of the people that believe these weird conspiracies come from backgrounds where their families dont love them enough or their groups are superficial towards them. The karen that I met that talked about flat earth had two kids that looked like they didnt care about her. Its just loneliness and loss of purpose. Flat earth helps them cope with the fact that theyre not that important for the overall development of others or the world. By deluding themselves to thinking they actually have something much more groundbreaking that can help humanity more so than what thousands of qualified scientists did in a span of a thousand years. Same goes for overly religious people that takes the Bible far too literally instead of just reading, meditating to it and interpreting it as intended by the Ancient Jews. Now I feel bad. If you have relatives that believe this, make them feel useful.
@LuckyLu6023 жыл бұрын

Loved your interpretation! I would add that there is also the opposite situation, where people have been told their entire life that they are special and everyone is special and everyone has a very special mission and so and so.. That also brings this existencial dread you're saying, because as life goes by you learn that no, you don't have divine purpose or mission and you're not automatically special! These scientists became special because they've dedicated their lives and their abilities to a greater cause, so little baby Karen can't stand the fact that she's not as special as she thought

@@leofst the first quote is not mine lol but yeah i suppose the opposite could also be true. Overall its just lack of self awareness that pushes these people to rebel against nonexistent opposition. Hopefully they change. The only way for them to change is how most people start their change: Just learn to accept who you are, and from that point you can start over. And this is hard for most people especially when you come from a history of advocating for something wrong. Flat earthers should accept that they have no enemies, that their experiments dont make sense with reality and they might become good scientists.Thats their first step in change. They will get ridiculed in the process of change but eventually they'll be accepted. Ya see, from what I saw, some of these people have potential to become valuable assets in science but they're just misled by their collective delusions. So I really hope a lot of flerfs change.

Not even the moon. You can see the damned thing, and see how it gets lit up by the sun. Notice in how the flat earth model they showed had the moon and sun opposite each other. That corresponds to the childish idea that you only see the moon at night. It's certainly easier to see the moon by night, but you can see it by day when it's in that position.

I met a flat earther before at a bar of all places. Weirdest conversation I ever had with someone. My friend and I asked him if hes been on a plane, and hes said yes. Then we asked him if he ever looked outside of the plane window. He said verbatim, "thats not the point." Were like. Okay, cool dude

Exactly, the main reason they seem to have sprouted out of nowhere in the past 10 years or so is basically a snowball effect - as more flat-earthers gain attention from people trying to mock or educate them, more joined in because I guess they hadn't enough intelligence/skill to find their own fulfillment in life.

Not true. It's about spreading the truth to those that are being deceived like we once were. We can also demonstrate that changing your field of view can allow you to see farther. These are all perspective effects and not earth curve.

In school we learned that historically, people knew the Earth was curved because sailing ships dissapear below the horizon but they are not sinking. It's a simple explanation that a kid can understand. Why do all these adults have a problem with it?
