It's really interesting that many of these debates with pseudoscience/conspiratorial thinkers feature a similar profile. One in which they peddle their gobbledygook while avoiding direct questions but ultimately they work to undermine the foundations of intelligibility. As if to say: if my nonsense can't count as an answer then there are no answers and we can't even get to true answers. It's the kid who knocks over the chess board when they're losing.

The funny thing about flerfs is that they always think that "seeing" is somehow an active action and that is somehow limited. It's a passive thing. You align your eye into the direction your want to see and the seeing itself is just light from that direction is hitting your eye. It's kinda crazy because optics is a quite simple subject that can easily be understood unlike some other topics in physics. However they somehow manage to make it sound mysterious.

When he said "God is alive" I kinda expected the question to clarify what life is and what alive means. Does god has a metabolic cycle? Doesn't that require to be a physical thing? If he escapes into "the soul is alive" where does the "soul" come from when y baby is born? Is the soul from the mother split in half? Do plants have souls? What happens when you cut of a seedling from a plant, does the soul gets cloned? Where in the body is the soul located or attached? How does the soul interact with our physical cells? .... I should have waited to the end before posting the comment :)
@dross4207

I’ve always wondered how that works with brain damage. When grandma has a stroke, does the part of her soul that controls her left arm and the ability to remember “little Jimmy’s” name go off to Heaven to wait for the rest of the soul? In an Alzheimer’s patient, does the part of the soul that retains the memories of family members leave and go to Heaven, only to return during moments of clarity? I think that I found a new name for my band…The Traveling Soul!!

@sibco96 It will die pretty quickly, since every seed has a storage of energy it uses to push out its first set of roots and growth before needing to rely on photosynthesis.

He didnt say plants magically sprout from earth water and sunshine, but plants generally require a mixture of those three elements in order to sprout and generate New cells. A germinated sprout will quickly wither and die if not exposed to water or sun, and hydro-beds are a relatively (in the grand scheme) new invention that fully removes soil from the propagation of non-aquatic plant life.

i think this would have moved on much faster if you just admitted we dont yet know how life on earth started. there are some working hypothesis(whatever the plural form is, i wont even try). there's no shame in saying "we dont yet know". that's the only honest answer. and THEN you call him out of making up stuff. you could also point out that all the building blocks of life have a natural affinity for each other and will form spontaneously. also the first life forms would probably be ridiculously simple. much simpler than a single modern cell. maybe just a strand of dna in a lipid capsule or something similar. something barely qualifying as life. and as time goes on they keep changing and getting more complex until eventually there are things that resemble modern cells. and that's when it gets really interesting with all the changes and complexity.

Hes so obsessed with "Well if you just boiled all the microbes out of water, or created a true vacuum" Except their are microbes that resist extreme heat and vacuum pressure. Abiogenesis events happen constantly, and like Peterson said, theyre absorbed into the existing microfauna. We have artificially recreated Many of the steps that cause abiogenesis events, between energizing chamicals to witness self assembling molecules, to watching those same molecules chain and extend out into the bulding blocks of cellular life, we just dont have the time to wait for it to naturally fail till it succeeds in creating New life. Also, "Body heat is the spirit" this dude has the same understanding of human biology and medicine as a medieval crow faced plague doc. "I watch the scans and the heat just... disappears! It doesnt Go anywhere, thats the spirit leaving us!" Except you can keep a body warm in a hot room, itll just decompose faster. Cold blooded animals exist, Cold blooded Mammals used to exist (The Balearic Cave Goat) and they dont create their own body heat, showing that living doesnt depend on this body-heat-soul argument. I really cant understand how these people survive when all their thoughts are scrambled between 100 and 3000yrs old.

Dead bodies are full of chemical processes, though--decomposition begins within minutes of death. I would argue that the main difference between a dead body and a living body is that the living body requires respiration and continued energy input to cause the chemical reactions, while the dead one does not. I'm not a biologist, though, so I could be wrong. Also, I will never stop finding it hypocritically hilarious that theists assert "you think life just magically appeared from rocks!" when their dude was literally magicked up out of the literal dust of the ground. Edited to add: has this man never gone up a steep hill? Has he never encountered hills in general? I'm beginning to think that flerfs would be absolutely terrified by some of the roads that exist in various cities around the world.
