It’s actually extremely common with theists. They know they can’t back up their own claims. As soon as someone called them on it they do whatever they can do to shift the burden or runaway from the topic.

@ChristopherGoodwin79

@@TypicalEveningPictures Sure you can, Peterson honestly answered that he doesn't know the origin of the big bang, or how abiogenesis started, but he clearly has opinions on both. The guest Generation was asked What Is Life? for 16 straight minutes. He kept replying I Don't Know. A very valid answer. Generation did try by answering a few times, saying Life is the difference between rocks and animals. When I look up the definition of life, it says "the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter". Seems to be the same answer to me. This back and forth was so annoying and childish.

@@ChristopherGoodwin79 he has opinions on how it works, because we know that. We don’t know how it stated, and he says as much. You can have an opinion on something based on what you know about it. You don’t have to have 100% confirmation of every element to know how it works
@isaacbruner65
@isaacbruner65 6 ай бұрын
@@ChristopherGoodwin79 I dont know where you found that definition of life, but it certainly isn't a good one. The condition that distinguishes ANIMALS AND PLANTS from inorganic matter? I guess whoever wrote that definition forgot about the estimated 1 million species of fungi, plus every single single-celled organism, from protists, to bacteria, to archaea. Apparently none of them are alive? Here's a far better definition. "Life is a quality that distinguishes matter that has biological processes, such as signaling and self-sustaining processes, from matter that does not, and is defined descriptively by the capacity for homeostasis, organisation, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction." There's nothing magical involved here, and non-living viruses give a good indication of how non-living self-replicating molecules could have given rise to the biological processes that define life. We don't know definitively all the details of how life originated, but we don't have to know how it happened to know that it could have happened completely naturally, and since there's no evidence that anything supernatural was involved, it's a reasonable assumption that it did happen naturally.
@spin.chicken
@spin.chicken 2 ай бұрын
@@ChristopherGoodwin79 A definition isn't necessarily what something IS. It's a very rudimentary summary and description of a thing or concept, but not necessarily what it IS. And no, Generation was not using "I don't know" genuinely. He repeatedly said "I don't know what YOUR definition of life is" meaning he has his own ideas and thoughts of what life is, he's just refusing to answer by saying "I don't know". And if he DOESN'T know, then he shouldn't be arguing about life in the first place.

I don''t want to say the caller is at the top of mount stupid because he actually admits that he doesn't know here and there. Lets call it "bipolar dunning kruger"? :) So he admits he doesn't have a clue about the fundamentals but at the same time claims he has all the answers because of "common knowledge". He tries to explain what life is by a dichotomy between a rock and a human. That's the reach of his understanding of life. He wants his world view simple: good, bad or life, non-life or right, wrong. He only thinks in absolutes and compares the most extreme opposite sides against each other. He seems to be quite young, but I don't have much hope that his attitude towards knowledge would drastically change in the future. I got shivers down my spine thinking about the fact that people like this are allowed to vote ( at least at some point ).

Let me be pedantic, ACTUALLY, it means to be focused on minor details and rules, or ones own academic knowledge. Now you can say his applies, and science deniers love to use this complaint, because I'm a sense yes, we are concerned withvhe details, rules, and academia, however isnt proper to say they are being pedantic, because the discussion IS on topics REQUIRE carefully wording, precision, and involves terms with specific meanings. Complaining about semantics and pedantry is a tactic to AVOID being held accountable for this like equivocation fallacies. That's not comparable to just making random and trivial corrections and distinctions, or just trying to show off your academic gusto.
