My favorite response to the 'were you around x years ago' dodge is to answer "Yes, I was there, I'm an immortal I was there throughout all of human history. Can you prove I wasn't?"
@David349817 ай бұрын
Or better: "Were you there to witness that I wasn't there?" ... Because it would immediately show that you don't HAVE to "be there" in order to justify claims, when there are other empirical and logical points of data to do that.

A recent KZbin "discussion" I had with a theist led to me asking why he kept referring to his god as he and him. The basic premise he came to was that we are created in god's image. At that point I had to ask the James T Kirk question with slightly different nouns. I changed "What does god need with a starship?" to "What does a god who lives outside of time and space need with eyes, ears, arms and legs and the rest of the parts of a body that is needed for life on Earth?". Oddly, there has been no answer to that question, they usually come up with their rote word salad answers quite quickly. Next time I might shorten it to does god have nipples and if so why?

10:34 Yes, if science "says something" then to the best of our knowledge at the time, that is what best matches "truth". If a dude in a lab coat says something, he'd better have science behind him if he wants to be taken seriously by anyone not simply impressed by a coat I got for $4 (I finally have a reason to use it after 4 years)
@Metaljacket4207 ай бұрын
Yup. Also when science "says something" it's very specific and clear, no allegory or interpretation required. It's also evident people who claim science just 'says things' never took a science course, because when you learn what 'science says', the rest of the course is to get there yourself by repeating the experiments and methodology to see exactly why science 'says' that.

Here is a joke: A new monk arrived at a monastery and reported to the Abbott. The Abbott told the new monk that his task is to make copies of the texts the Monastery has. The monk asked, "Do I make copies from the original text father?" The Abbott said, "No. We copy from copies. That way the original will not get damaged" The monk replied, " But how do we know that there are no errors in the copies?" The Abbott thought about it and then said, "You are right. Let me go down into the vault and compare a copy to the original" The Abbott was gone for quite a while and the monk became concerned. He went down to the vault and found the Abbott upset and banging his head into the wall while murmuring, " we left out the r" The monk was confused and asked, "What do you mean father? Left the letter r out of what?" The Abbott replied, "It was was supposed to say Celebrate" ... 😁

The gnostics wrote a heap of books thousands of years ago saying the Old Testament Jewish god was a powerful but fallible, lying petty vindictive etc asshole who decided to make the world etc in order to amuse itself and didn’t care how many beings would suffer because of it’s imperfect creation. The bible says most of those things as well but some bits attempt to attribute some of the more obviously evil stuff to something it created instead. The gnostic texts have about as much credibility as a lot of the New Testament and was written considerably closer to when the people were supposed to be having the revelations they talk about than almost all of the Old Testament. I think the gnostic Demiurge is only slightly less logically impossible than an all good Omni Omni God but it has at least as much evidence and may even have a reason for becoming the hiding go seek champion of the universe (it isn’t the most powerful thing in (whatever you call all of everything when you are including putative supernatural beings from outside causality)

I don't think that people ever actually thought Jesus was "white". I think that the early renaissance painters simply painted him with certain European characteristics. However, you can see that they made some effort to reference his middle eastern origin. "Christ Pantokrator" is one of the earliest and most famous depictions of Jesus, and he looks unmistakably middle eastern, in my opinion. They obviously understood that he was a Jewish man and didn't have any other reference than the Jews that lived in Europe.

A belief is a made-up opinion. Beliefs by definition are not based on demonstrable facts -- you don't need to believe a fact. A fact exists independent of belief in it. The earth is a sphere whether or not someone believes it is or not. Until we know a fact, all we can do is make up something (a belief) we think is true. Science calls this a hypothesis (a belief) and is delighted when a hypothesis is refuted (or confirmed) based on repeatable tests. Religious writing does the opposite: make up something (a belief) then gets angry and goes into denial when the belief is refuted based on repeatable tests.
