Heavy metal and rap have a lot in common lyrically and thematically so there tends to be a bit of cross pollination with certain artists and it leads to some of the best work. The best artist's in both genres push multiple meaning's into every lyric and try to deal with real raw emotions. It's also a little difficult for new listeners to get the full effect of the track because it takes time and practice to keep up with the lyrics due to the speed or style of the genre.

Slipknot was formed in the mid-90's in Des Moines, Iowa... Shawn 'Clown' Crahan (percussion) wore a clown mask and seemed visually captivating on stage, so Slipknot started wearing masks onstage when they performed... They also used dark, surreal imagery when they independently released their first album in 1996 - 'Feed, mate, kill, repeat'... Joey Jordison (drums) and Paul Gray (bass) were part of the original band... By 1999, they had hired Corey Taylor (lead vocals) and recorded their self-titled album w/ Chris Fehn (percussion), DJ Sid Wilson (turntables), Craig '133' Jones (keys and samples)... Jim Root and Mick Thomson (guitars) completed the 9-member Slipknot that year and the album sold platinum... They followed it up w/ the 'Iowa' album in 2001... then, Slipknot took a break and returned in 2004 w/ the album "Volume 3: the subliminal verses"... This line-up released the album 'All hope is gone' in 2008, and this was a single off that #1 album. Tragically, it would be the last album w/ the classic 9 Slipknot. In 2010, bassist Paul Gray was found dead after an OD of prescription drugs... Drummer Joey Jordison faced declining health and was fired in 2013 - he passed away in 2021. Slipknot dedicated their 2014 album to the late Paul Gray... " .5: The Gray Chapter" w/ Jay Weinberg (drums) joining and Alessandro Venturella (bass) added to Slipknot. Eventually, internal conflicts led to both Chris Fehn (percussion) being fired... and Craig '133' Jones (keys/ samples) leaving and being replaced for Slipknot's recent albums and tours. In 2002, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor also launched his unmasked 5-member band Stone Sour. They have released 6 studio albums before recently going on hiatus.
