If you watch at 2:31 Lindsey nearly falls down the stairs and Stevie has to catch him. God! He was on some good strong stuff.

@Mariana Frusciante in the book it revealed that Lindsey had taken a Quaalude along with copious amounts of alcohol and could barely stand. He threw up all over Dick Clarks shag carpet in his office and was thrown out..

For a laugh compare 2.33 with how Carol Ann Harris describes it in her biography Storms: Suddenly he leaped up like someone had lit a firecracker under his butt and took off after the rest of his fellow band members. Already a full minute in front of Lindsey, they were all gathered on the left side of the stage behind the podium, posing and smiling for the cameras as they waited for him to climb the flight of about fifteen stairs to join them. And then it happened. Lindsey began to ascend the stairs. His legs looked like they were made of rubber as he started to climb: first one stair, then the next. With each step his legs were getting shakier and looser as though the bones were dissolving in front of everyone’s eyes. A stunned silence fell over the auditorium as every living soul watched Lindsey’s progress in morbid fascination-for it was apparent to us all that the newly crowned guitarist of the American Music Awards’ Best Band of the Year was running a 90 percent chance of tumbling backward and landing on his ass in front of millions of TV viewers. Too stunned to move, I started praying again. Praying that someone-anyone-from the band would go to his rescue. And, once again, my prayers went unanswered. Stevie and Christine, faces hanging slack in shock, stood in dead silence as they watched in horror his stumbling, bandy-legged ascent. Lindsey continued to climb, legs quivering … face beaded in sweat … looking like a character from a B-movie who’d been shot and was dragging out his last moments on earth as he mounted the steps to the pearly gates. As if this spectacle weren’t bad enough, Lindsey was not headed toward the podium on stage left. Instead, his superhuman effort was leading him to the opposite side of the stage. He was so cross-eyed, perhaps, that his line of destination was completely on the wrong side of the platform.

I'm reading "Storms" right now and there are all kinds of little factual errors in it, mostly regarding dates in the chronology. For example, she notes that the band had three weeks off in-between the first, North American leg of the "Rumours" tour and the second leg in Europe--wrong, they only had one day! She also says "Rumours" was released at the end of February when in fact it was ready for sale by February 4 (a minor error, but this is info that's readily available, so really no excuse). And of course here, she embellishes greatly and is also wrong when she states that it was Mick and John who helped him to the podium while Stevie and Christine "stood in dead silence as they watched in horror"--it's Stevie who is behind Lindsey and very clearly keeps him from falling in the actual footage. The author also gets it wrong when she says this happened after "Rumours" won the best album award--it happened for the best group award. She also states later that night when she saw the TV broadcast that Buckingham's stumble had been magically edited out, but in this surviving footage you can still see him stumble. But it's really just a momentary stumble that is quickly rectified by Stevie, nothing all *that* horrifying or embarrassing (although I do believe Carol Ann when she says he was plastered that night). Her book is still quite enjoyable, but it really makes me wonder how many other rock bios and memoirs are distorted versions of the past--virtually all of them, I would assume.

Agreed! Stevie still cared/cares about Lindsey she just couldn't be with him anymore. I am reading Carol Harris's book Storms. How she recounted this event is completely different. She said that Jon and Mick rescued him. Carol hated Stevie, but it is all there on tape.

Her recollection of Lindsay's "problem" is a bit more dramatic than it appears here. Didn't she say he was about a minute behind the rest of them going up on stage and then went the wrong way and needed rescuing by Mick & John? Aside from that veer right and nice save by Stevie, I wouldn't have realised I was watching what she described.
