Much less say it in front of a room of hundreds of people. This is basically every drug addict's nightmare. He demonstrated compassion not only despite his illness, but he did so in front of the whole country. At first glance it seems like such a trivial matter. Why would he incriminate himself just to avoid deflecting blame on a dead person? B/c he deeply cared about that dead person. At the beginning of the film, Whip tells Trina he wants her to be his wife. She thinks this is a joke, but considering he just threw himself under the bus to protect her honor that "joke" sounds more sincere. I'm not saying he shouldn't have done what he did. What he did was right, not only b/c he protected Trina's honor but b/c his illness placed everyone around him in jeopardy. Underneath the alcoholism and selfishness, he is a good person. His conscience literally overpowered his instincts plus the pressure placed on him by the union rep and the lawyer plus the fear of utter humiliation he would face if he told the truth about his drinking.

6 months sober today after almost 15 years of heavy drinking. I remember watching this movie a little over a year ago when I was at my worst and this scene in particular had a really profound impact on me. I’m not an emotional person, but when you can put yourself in exactly the same headspace that Denzel portrays in this movie, it’s hard not to choke up. Ive been to rehab before but fell back off the wagon hard. 6 months ago I had been drinking and snorting blow for im not sure how many days straight with virtually no food, water, or sleep and I ended up having a grand mal seizure. I don’t remember anything except waking up in the hospital with tubes in my arms and nose and my family around me and my mother in tears. The doctor told me as bluntly as he could that I either get sober or I die. Haven’t touched a drop since that day and I’ll continue to live one more day every day without it.

ppl assume tha title of tha movie refers solely to his profession as a pilot of aircraft, but imo tha word "FLIGHT" more accurately read as a synonym of "ESCAPE", specifically his escape from tha personal hell of his alcoholism. thru tha entire movie, hes thrown endless xcuses & justifications by other ppl & like even tha universe itself to deny his problem & remain enslaved to booze, & tha interrogation here straightup like his last chance to liberate hisself from tha prison of alcohol

All the nominees that year were better tbh. Flight had competition like Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master. With Man on Fire, there was Leo DiCaprio - The Aviator and Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda. With competition like all of those, he wasn't exactly cheated.

We come to that moment sooner or later. Some meet their end before that happens. I lost a lot of friends and acquaintances. One night, after a night of seeing how much I could get down my throat and up my nose, I suddenly saw the reality of what I was doing. And I realized I couldn't live like that another moment. Two solid hours, I cried; more than Denzel did in this scene. The following morning, I realized I didn't have to live like that anymore. That was August 1st, 1988. Been clean ever since.

It’s very common among (the great) pilots. I’m sorry for your loss, but I’m sure he had some indescribable moments that most may never know about. I dread the day this happens to my father. I try to prepare and remind myself that it hurts the ones they leave behind most. I hope you cherish the good memories yet find peace. One of the biggest problems in this movie is exactly that dilemma. That being, characters making choices for no reason, or we just have to assume a reason,, she's dead and will experience no negative repercussions for having alcohol in her system, everyone knows she saved a kid, she never did anything that would have actually been impaired by her blood alcohol level, Whip just felt some weird sense of justice over nothing for no reason.

This is arguably the most beautiful scene in the entire movie (in my opinion). The rest of the story building up to this moment is sort of a trick in a way, because you're watching what is clearly the dysfunctional, destructive behavioral pattern of an addict, and everyone else in a position of moral or literal authority (the characters in the movie) are not only fine with turning a blind eye to it but don't even think it was serious enough to even bother with and only really feel committed to the legal process because the law requires it, at risk of their comfortable socioeconomic positions. In fact they actively tell him to lie about it and just deny that it even happened. The movie actively tries to make you buy the complete crock that this kind of behavior is healthy and acceptable, and that it's normal to just watch people go through addictions like this without ever intervening with the exception of enabling them, glamourizing the potency of hard drugs in the hands of a "professional" like the drug dealer that brings the captain out of his drunken stupor in the hotel room (punctuated with the musical score you'd usually hear in a bank heist movie when he walks out looking and feeling freshly sober). The trick of the movie is that it's trying to get you on the same side as everyone else. And the reason this particular scene is so beautiful, to me at least, is because _the addict_ is the one to _break that illusion for the audience._ The _addict_ is the one that defies the perversion of justice and the lies that are destroying the legal process's route to the truth. The _addict_ is the one that tears down the construct that is destroying his life. The plane incident was a miracle of sorts, because it culminated in an opportunity to overcome this addiction. This scene, this moment in court at the height of its proceedings, was that opportunity. It's symbolic of the empowerment people can experience when they finally accept the truth of their reality. In that moment, they're choosing to do something about it, their acknowledgement a manifestation of their desire to *_change._*

Just my opinion, but I think one of the qualities that makes Denzel such an extraordinary actor, is that his real self is so very genuine. The purity of his very essence is even able to come through in the various roles he takes, which translates on-screen to absolute believability. Only certain others have that type of natural advantage to the craft. It's a truly rare occurrence 😐

I remember watching this movie in rehab... Close to the end of my short 30 day treatment. It didn't really affect me in any way emotionally then. It seemed like a treat- a getaway from the daily groups and exercises. After I got out and started going to groups I realized the gravity behind admitting a powerlessness over something, both to yourself and to strangers in public. And admitting that you need something more than just YOU to change. Strong or weak it doesn't matter. Strength is not power. Thanks for those who read- though its more for me than it is for you- i appreciate you.
