Commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) has a problem with drugs and alcohol, though so far he's managed to complete his flights safely. His luck runs out when a disastrous mechanical malfunction sends his plane hurtling toward the ground. Whip pulls off a miraculous crash-landing that results in only six lives lost. @Stinky Ham One month sober today and I feel great. I’ll save the long story of why or how but I feel much more confident this time that I am going to stay sober. I have changed my diet and gotten active in just this first month. Lost 18 lbs, signed up for a tennis club, gotten back into flying lessons for my private pilot license, and I haven’t had anything close to a serious temptation for alcohol. I just bottomed out and couldn’t stand how sick I felt every single horrible day of drinking. It’s to the point now where I am actually mad at alcohol for all the time it took from me. I really feel like I will never go back this time. It’s a great feeling.

If he was let out his addictions would have probably caused another accident , he couldn’t get over it after the crash so what are the chances he’ll recover, very slim . He's not guilty of the deaths of those 6 people, he's guilty of flying a jet that time and all the other times drunk and endangering the lives of literally a hundred people at a time. If he had been deemed at fault, he would've likely been given a life sentence. Drinking and driving can, depending on the jurisdiction, result in jail time of up to a year. A plane is capable of far more destruction and requires far more skill and both of these facts are further exacerbated by being a commercial pilot. The latter of these includes provisions of public trust similar to doctors and engineers: people's lives depend on your actions and you need to be accountable to their safety. All of these would be escalators to his jail sentence as would the fact that this was far from an isolated incident. The one area where I disagree with this movie is that he would likely be hailed as a hero, that the crash happened in spite of his inebriation and his actions are such that he demonstrably saved lives and so there would likely be some clemency. For violating the public trust, he would never be allowed to have it again so lifetime ban of commercial license is a certainty. His pilots license being suspended indefinitely or permanently would also be expected. But I'm less convinced he'd get jail time. Probation which includes sobriety requirements and attending counseling, possibly some fines or community service, possible some other conditions, etc, feel more in line with what a court would do.

The irony is, him being drunk was probably the reason why he was able to land that plane with minimal losses. Besides probably having calmed his nerves, he was able to conjure up something bizarre, crazy and perhaps genius to save a lot of people on that plane by flying it upside down. Several pilots who later tried to save that plane in the simulator failed.

i watched the movie a few years ago and every time i open the movie's folder i think it is a good time to watch it again but i dont , cause it will destroy what i thought of the characters. i think when he faces the investigation and faced his new lover reputation is up to point that will destroy her family, besides he realized that his addiction is up to lethal level that it could destroy more lives more than he can imagine, so he decides that it is enough to be what he is and starts to be the one he hopes to be. a complete honest free person who has no reason to live with 2 faces .... and i dont think that there will be another actor who has the ability to deliver this role like danzel has done ... what an actor

I have been an alcoholic for many years! This is now about the 10th time I've tried to break this awful addiction.. I've tried so hard I can't believe it took me this long to finally understand how hard this is! I have been sober for quite some time now almost 5 months and I know deep down that it is very easy to go back to this hell. They say the first step is to become aware of your addiction. Over 20 years I figured it out but it's still hard.. Alcoholism follows you forever and is a constant battle in your life! Try not to judge alcoholics harshly!

I've been struggling with alcoholism the better part of the last 5 years. I have good spells, but I always end up going right back to the bottle the second anything gets to be too much. I know, when I AM sober, that I should stop. I NEED to stop, but I'm living proof that it's a disease. You can't always just stop. Sometimes, the issue is rooted so deep inside of you, it needs to be cut out, and scenes like this make me just a little bit hopeful that one day, despite all my issues, despite my dependency on this poison, I'll find the strength to cut it out. @@sanderkonto297 If only it was that easy. Detox can be extremely dangerous for long time addicts. Going cold turkey for an alcoholic can be fatal to some folks. Addiction occurs because your body literally develops a physical dependency on the substance and the chemical balance in your brain adjusts to accommodate the existence of this substance over a long enough time scale. Its to the point that once they remove said substance from their system which their body has depended on for years it is enough to kill some people. Finding the mental courage is but one part of fighting addiction. Dealing with the physical consequences on your body during Detox is the other. Its why detox should always be under the supervision of a medical team.

No, it didn't... but he's not supposed to be flying drunk either way you look at it. They are two separate issues; he saved everyone AND he betrayed the public trust. Just because they happened at the same time doesn't mean he's not responsible for the latter.

I saw this a few daysbefore Pesach. Denzel says he is free sitting in prison. Though he is at the lowest point in his life, having lost family, friends, career, and “freedom”, he is finally at peace in a way that makes it all “OK”. He faced a tidal wave of his own “failures” and, not only survived, but grew in astonishing ways. Pesach, a.k.a Passover, is the season for liberation. In fact the whole MONTH is a time when liberation from the “pharaohs” that we ALLOW to imprison us is available to us in an EXTRAordinary way. Yes. We can find our way out of “egypt” EVERYDAY of our lives, but there is something special, in a cosmic way, about THIS month and THIS week and THIS day of Pesach. Amazingly, it all starts with desire...not will...not effort...just desire; just the KNOWING that you are in a place that you don’t want to be. You must then have the courage to actually WALK OUT OF YOUR EGYPT when you are set free (cause sometimes being in prison becomes the safer place to be) The reason powerful elephants can be held in place with a simple rope tied to a peg in the ground is because when they were young, they were CHAINED to and enormous tree. They would pull and pull and pull to be free until they LEARNED that freedom was not possible when there was something on their leg. So when their handler ties that rope on their leg, THEY WON’T EVEN TRY to escape. They believe, they have LEARNED, a lie. YOU, me, everyone of us have a “rope on our leg”. It CANNOT contain us, but we ALLOW IT TO. Amazingly, because we are all part of nature, the answer WILL COME. It is like we are all caterpillars. WE Will become butterflies. We cannot NOT become butterflies. It is our destiny. Whether or not we KNOW it or BELIEVE it or even DENY it, we are DESTINED to walk out of every “egypt” in our lives. In reality this probably wouldn't have lead to jail time. Although this is only a fake situation, the court established that the pilot's actions did not cause the crash therefore he was not guilty of manslaughter. Worst case he loses his job and all piloting licences. If the court had decided that him being drunk had somehow contributed to the plane crash then he definitely faces multiple counts of manslaughter and definitely goes to prison.

In court the same rules apply, this would be considered a valid statement HOWEVER, the judge would have to decide if it is admissible or not or let the jury decide for themselves. Regardless, both in court & at this hearing, it is a valid statement.

@@walmanthegreat you dont understand the difference between criminal and civil liability. the man is sitting in prison because he flew a plane while he was drunk and high, which is a CRIME. it has nothing to do with whether the plane broke apart in the air or not. even if the flight went smoothly and would have landed at its destination no problem, he would have still been committing a crime. while his conviction may be evidence in a lawsuit against the airline/manufacturer, the pilot was prosecuted by the GOVERNMENT for BREAKING THE LAW
