I am trained in 3DS max and have to transition myself to Maya for an internship. I didn't know where to start and this was a huge help. Also, it's nice to hear your familiar voice since I have watched some of your Zbrush tutorials in the past. Thank you for this super useful video :)
I've tried delving into 3D modelling many times in the past but I could never make sense of how objects are structured under the hood. The bit about nodes and what actually happens when you create or modify an object is the first tutorial I've seen that explains this. Something really clicked when watching this. I rarely comment on videos but I wanted to thank you for that.

For those who can’t afford Maya you can have a free educational licence of the software for 3 years without really being in a vfx school, it’s legal, free and give you access to the full software 👌🏼
@funky_pantss79294 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but not to confuse a few people here, Maya's 2020 version's educational license is for only 1 year! (but you can re-new it) 2019's version (educational) is for 3 years! But when you want to download the student version, it will tell you how long you can use it for. Have a good one with Maya :)

So on the AD site it only asks if you're an educator or student and if you pick student it asks if high school or university. Do I just pick university? this software is just completely out of the budget of most aspiring artists... who I feel make up the bulk of your audience...
@RuthwikRao4 жыл бұрын
Look at it this way. What you're saying presumes all those artists are gonna be paying for the licenses themselves. Most artists who enter the industry shall eventually be working at a company, presumably one which can afford the software and licensing costs for these tools because they're gonna be making back a lot more money from the work they do, so the individual artists won't exactly be paying for any of it, so cost isn't a concern for an artist in that scenario. Secondly, all Autodesk tools come with a student version (I think it lasts for 3 years) which are feature complete minus commercial usage, so you can just download it and get started right away and use the complete range of the toolset, and that's where FlippedNormals comes in to get you through that. :) So once you learn maya, completely for free, and prepare a portfolio of work from it, then send it off to studios and once you get a job, you can continue using it without paying a single dollar lol (this is probably more situational but you get the gist). So the cost shouldn't be a concern unless you want to start a studio yourself, or wanna freelance and the employer isn't gonna be paying for the software when you're freelancing. This is probably why Autodesk started the Indie tier recently, to start attracting/retaining the freelancer and independent artist userbase.

I never understood why a lot of people complain about the UI being bad. I never once ever felt that the UI is holding back my workflow. Unlike Blender, I don't have to run my finger all over the keyboard. Most of the important keys are perfectly bunched under my left hand. W, E, R are far well placed for move, rotate and scale. I hove pie menus! everything I need is right under Ctrl, Shift and sometimes both. I love that I can switch to different ortho views from the spacebar. So what is exactly the problem here? Blender is free!- OH FUCK OFF! As if you don't have any kind of torrent client on your system. How come 99% of the CG work done on Artstaion is on "Professional" software? Is it the mission of the Blender cult to go to every professional software videos and rant that Blender can do this too, and shit?
@FlippedNormals4 жыл бұрын
The 'issues' with the Maya UI is that there are so many features, which is scary when you're new. The more experienced you get, you learn to just focus on the things you need instead of all the buttons and features. Once you work using marking menus, the UI is quite nice.

@@InnerAnimate Someone doesn't get laid... No but honestly if you have to bring SJWs into this (it's baffling that you use the term unironically btw) you're a very stupid and irrational person that probably should't even get to vote and will definitely get nowhere in the industry. @@ALGHOTTE Maya just got the ability to use the GPU for rendering and still doesn't support all CPU features, so let's not talk about essential features being added late. I'm a Houdini user myself so I don't really give a fuck about Maya or Blender but I have to say that I'd much rather use Blender than Maya for anything except rigging and animation. Everything in Blender is so much better designed (in terms of UI consistency Blender is better even than Houdini but it doesn't have nearly as many features so it's to be expected) and thanks to the hotkey-centric workflow it's much faster to use as well. The fact that there's an entire mode dedicated to edge sliding in Maya instead of being a hotkey or whatever is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. The only reason why Maya is even on the map is because of its animation workflow.
