This Rocking chair was a real mess. it was repaired so many times that most of it was a repair lol
I tried sewing for the first time and first time re-upholstered a chair. Hope you enjoy this video.

I’m a sewing teacher and my dad is an upholsterer, you did an excellent job! You’d definitely get an A+ in my class! That tacking strip is hard to do. I’ve seen my dad do it and he has a few tricks to get it just right. And sometimes he has had to redo it so don’t be too hard on yourself. If my dad watched this I think he would be impressed of what you accomplished as well.😊

Straight seams are the most complicated to make! I've been sewing all my life, I also studied patternmaking and textile design. And I always say that making straight seams is a skill not everybody has. Curves are more easy to make.

Oh Jay! I have been sewing since I was a little girl, and I am so impressed not only with how this turned out, but also with how boldly you tackled a completely new skill! The chair came out simply beautiful. I have two suggestions: if you place your pins perpendicular to your work, they are easy to handle than if they are parallel as you had them. Also, you might want to take a look at a fifth video to add to your new profession as an upholsterer - David has a good tutorial on how to make a simple stretcher to make the fabric tight using a piece of wood and nails. Well done, you.

Molly beat me to it, but I was going to make the same suggestions about the pins. And about how boldly you took on a fabric with a pile that needs to be the right direction, and on your first time sewing, too! Bravo! I love the color choice for your fabric with that wood. One of my treasures is my grandpa's upholstery hammer...I use it in jewelry making. He had an upholstery business with his brother, then he created a chain of fabric stores. All, after coming to this country with little English, or formal education, and only $15.00 in his pocket.

Oh my.....you threw everything but the cat at the chair. Having sewn since I was 9 and having more sewing machines than I will tell.....you did a fabulous job for a rank newbie! I taught both my sons how to sew, because everyone should have a clue. That style is called Danish Modern. My mother had coffee and end tables with the same lines and wood.

Always impressed that you try things you have never done before. Velvet and piping are not beginner choices so kudos! Please, please, please use a respirator when using the spray adhesive. Two folks I know from the upholstery industry died of brain cancer from using it unprotected for decades. 😊

There is a story about a tortoise and a hare. Slow and steady wins the race. I am a professional sewist - 60 yrs. I still slowly sew many things b/c of the type of textile or the type of garment or b/c of the design of what I am sewing. The fact that you took ply/pile into consideration means you actually watched someone who knew what they were doing to learn from. Hats off for a good job and the added decorative stitch was a nice touch. Hats off for a good job and a lovely rocker restoration.

This will be one of my favorite projects so far. The more you get around the shop, the more I like the project, and you used a lot of equipment and material. The upholstery was fantastic, would have been difficult for someone with lots of experience. My mom was a seamstress and alterations specialist, she did a lot of costume repairing. It's a difficult profession, but based on how you finished this one, you're already way above the curve. I also like to see you revive furniture that will actually come into body contact, like stools, chairs, benches. Keep up the work, we are really enjoying these.

First rule do sewing trials on scrap pieces of material, this way if you goof your piece isn’t damaged! How smart of you to know about the pile , on the fabric . I get a feeling this won’t be your last sewing project, you’ve just opened the “ can of worms “ to a new world , keep it up , pat yourself on the back! Great job !

I just want to say that when you do the "2000 years later", I still laugh every single time. LOL. I am so glad you didn't give up on this beautiful rocker. I've been "sewing" for decades, but only for my own stuff. I would never do it for anyone else. I can't sew a straight line to save my soul. I recommend for first time sewing to use a test piece of the fabric and practice the feel of sewing before stitching together the actual cut piece for the project. And use a sample of the fabric intended for the project. This way a person has a bit of a feel for sewing. Ah the learning curve, hats off and good job! I see you used a decorative stitch with the yellow thread- nice touch. Pretty green fabric btw.

All the earlier repairs indicate that the chair was beloved, or at least useful in its previous life. You've given it a whole new purpose with your joinery, and the new upholstery looks amazing. And piping, too! You gave the sewing the same level of attention to detail as your carpentry. All the frame pieces, stretchers, etc. are remarkably delicate; no wonder it needed so many repairs!

Honestly, Jay, you are fearless, even when it came to using a sewing machine for the first time. The wood of the rocking chairs thanks you for giving it a second life. It's a beautiful color and finish. It gleams. The dark green velvet gleams as well. Great choice. Greens can be tricky because they either have a yellow undertone, or, a blue undertone. And the color intensity matters a lot too. You chose wisely. Looking forward to more upholstery pieces in the future.
