@ Steve Sorry so sleepy. Thank you for your messages. I’m glad that the GO-KART story is in there. I’ve not had a chance to see those enough. I have keep writing now but so sleepy. Coffee should kick in soon I’m glad you liked that audio recording of the 71 interview. Thank you for filling me in on some of the details. STICKY FINGERS had just come out. They were now living in Exile in south of France. Spring of 71 you say. COOL Thanks for giving it a deep listen. Apologies I’m sooo pooped im falling asleep hunched over the edge of my bed

thank you Jason for the support and commenting. I will never say no, as I had no intention to do Exile. Early Stones, especially with Brian involved, as there are just so many defensive Brian fans, that if there is an ounce of negativity or incorrect info or M&K discussion, then they explode. Not sure if I want to deal with it and go down the same format I usually do. Maybe some selected things. But will see! cheers

@@FlipSideCT I understand you completely! I was kicked off a Brian Facebook page for suggesting that M&K were just as responsible for the Stones sound as Brian! And it would be hard to do an accurate piece without the negative aspects of him... Thanks again for your awesome work!

I really enjoyed Exile Volume Two and thought your decision on how to mix the audio and video of interviews worked well. Your work is heroic and as a former photojournalist featuring the many known and yet to be more fully known photojournalist deserves praise. Obviously seeing Robert Frank’s work is always a treat. Good Job Steve!

I can not see any STONES fan not digging into these, but there are, about 2% of them, and they are removed from commenting. As mentioned, it takes intelligence to be focused and aware to watch these extended clips. so thanks again!!

Just finished watching Part 2. Highly engrossed in your degree of detail! I found myself following sub-story lines all throughout, being highly absorbed. I especially enjoyed the various outtakes and stories about the songs’ origins, which I find remarkable. I actually learned a little history, like the stories of Angela Davis and George Jackson. I have many of Exile’s tracks on my workout playlist. Excellent LP! Excellent video! Kudos! As a donor, I highly recommend this Part 2 video, if you’re a true Stones fan. There is an exquisite amount of detail about the writing and recording process of this LP. I plan on donating again, toward the production of Part 3 of this, as well as the upcoming Making of Sticky Fingers LP, as mentioned at the end of this update video.

Hey there Steve. Nice to spend some time with you. I may have seen Laughing Dogs too if I saw Blondie in 1979. Unfortunately I did not. I saw her the year before at the Orpheum in Boston. Todd sounded great. First I heard of him. Did you see him live? Or did you connect with his music through satellite or terrestrial radio? Very cool Love Train delivery. That Keith 3" CD can is sweet. I remember that we sold them at Strawberries. I will def tune into your part two and three for the greatest Stones album to ever grace this good earth. It definitely makes my top 25 albums of all time list. Which includes all genres of music. It is a masterpiece from start to finish. The intro to Let It Loose, Rocks Off and Happy. Come on. So so good. Thanks Steve. My best to all of you. What's the secret on not aging? You look great~ Rob/Boston

And wow, Bootsy Collins! You know, just a staple in the music industry. He goes way, way back to the beginning James Brown days if I’m not mistaken. I always loved that big ol’ Clock hanging around his neck. Great bass player too! Well Steve I know you’ve been working real hard on exile two and three and I just can’t wait to see the results. Oh, before I jump off here I just want to mention that Snider a huge stones/Keith fan. Well all right Steve. You’re the greatest man! Keep it rocking. Yes, Todd has connected with me as he watches my docs and we discuss on the side. He does a great Sympathy version he pointed me to on his channel. He actually finished some session work with Don Was, and he was psyched about that. He is now rehearsing with John Prine's band to play shows of his tunes. I saw Neal Casal with Shannon McNally in Woodstock, NY a long time ago. I was wearing a Keith for President shirt and he asked me where I got it. The sound check was jamming. He is on two of Shannon McNally's records - Jukebox Sparrows and Ran on Pure Lightning. Very good stuff!! Also Hazy Malaze is a very jamming band that Neal was in. I highly recommend. Neal's on a lot of recordings I don't know about. I have a couple of his solo CDs that are very introspective and deep. He was an intricate songwriter -Southern Cal Jackson Browne feeling in places but with a rock edge. Steve, I appreciate the hard work you've done in putting together pt. 2 of Exile. You really get deep into the artwork and every song. It's amazing, the rabbit holes, as you call them, that you go down, that are very important to the Rolling Stones history. So so so so so so EXCELLENT!!! Not done yet - have an hour to go. Gonna watch it now!!!! I'm at Joe's got a cough. I downloaded Todd Snider's free recording - Songs for the Daily Planet from his website, which I will listen to tomorrow for sure. Thank you for the recommendation!!!!

Hello Steve; Good finds at the record show. Todd Snider underrated Roller. Jerry Jeff Walker post Circus Maximus. Tony Visconti, Bowie's producer among other groups. Uninformed interviewers can flatten the interview & render it boring. Some very good vinyl pick ups with the Staple Singers, Otis Spann, Laughing Dogs, Quicksilver, Jeff Beck, Hendrix, & Bootsy. Take care, Tina & Pat!~

@@FlipSideCT He's tremendous. The "live: Return of the storyteller" album that came out in '22 is great, and the original Storyteller album from 2011 (Bill Elliot Story!!!) is great as well. As far as the studio albums go, he has half a dozen, give or take, that are excellent and very much worth checking out, but my favorite is "The Devil You Know" (2006) . . . followed closely by "Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables." which incidentally includes THE greatest single song about the Rolling Stones, "Brenda," or in this particular case Mick and Keith - check out the lyrics for anyone curious. Keep up the good work as always Flipside! Love the Stones and your research/hard work and takes on various albums and how they came to be!

@ Steve flip side CT Just taking a short break from writing and I stumbled on this….just had to tell you Keith Richards interview 1971 France on KZbin His voice loud and clear age 27 I think we can hear Anita on there too. The person doing the audio interview sounds very continental European to me. Not sure if you ever listened to this. I just found it when I was googling You might think it’s a blast to listen to. Of course yes they were in the south of France at the time working on EXILE It’s amazing to have this voice recording of his and it’s not really a short interview. “BOBBY KEYS IS EXACTLY THE VERY SAME AGE AS ME AND HE PLAYED WITH BUDDY HOLLY…” ( wow ) Keith goes into all kinds of stuff in this interview Really explains stuff and gets stuff across. Anita Is in there too helping out to explain stuff or to drive Keith’s points home even further. I don’t think it was the one done for Rolling Stones Magazine but I could be wrong.. you might enjoy having a listen to this if you haven’t already. I’ve never come across this one until now.

Reply to: Steve Flip Side CT Sure! Here it is for you. On KZbin it is simply called: Keith Richards Interview 1971 France I thought too I had heard them all but this was new for me. Just audio on this, no video. Keith really seems to tell it how it is and was into this doing this. “ ITS MY BAND. “ haha love it ! This audio interview really seems to fit well with the making of exile You can hear Keith’s voice very clearly! It offers great realistic insight into where his head was maybe I think. He seems very clear headed to me absolutely. I think he was into doing this one. Haha THATS A FUNNY WORD ROCK N ROLL YOU THINK CHUCK BERRY DIDNT DIG IT? That’s what it’s all about man Haha I love this shit Keith age 27 “5 years is a long time in Rock n Roll man” “People are made and broken and dead in that amount of time in the world of rock n roll. “ I hope you can give it a listen and tell me please Steve if it was new material for you?! MAN THIS IS AN ARTIFACT ENJOY LIKE it just about as much as your docs Maybe you could even use it.. always happy to help out ! But my thought was just wanted you to enjoy it and let me know if you heard this one before yet. Can’t believe how clear his voice is on this one 100% I know the time period they were in but 100% I never once heard this audio recorded interview before He and Anita do sound a lot like when I read the 71 magazine interview done of them by The Rolling Stones magazine Well same time frame.. @ Steve I got both of your replies big THANKS! I loved reading both of them. I took another listen to it and ohh shit maybe that isn’t Anita. That might be the assistant with the main interviewer.....not Anita. But I was getting some Anita vibes she might be in there too but probably not. They spoke of last August so it might have been after August 1971. Or maybe they meant August 70 I’m kind of 100% sure that was recorded in the south of France When I have more time I’m going to give it a good very close listen I was an English Language teacher so stuff like this also I send it to my Japanese friends and friends in Taiwan and I say look if you can understand this guy with no body language this is really good listening ability you will have of spoken English! Ask them if they can understand any of it at all. It’s a turn on for me:) Ohh Steve one question For making of EXILE 1971 part You have definitely come across Keith’s big GoKart accident in the south of France where he cut his back up real good? I understand he was trying to stay relatively Mr Clean before the GOKART wipe out. After that big gash to his back it was back to the medicine. That’s what I remember reading anyways. Yeah Anita seems to have been in the habit of answering for Keith which I kind of like because to me it sounds like they were super tight and weaving but that sort of thing irritates the hell out of some people. Ask me one thing my girlfriend answers the question for me...ask her something then I answer for her... LOL I kind of groove on that and Germans in my family also are exactly that way too. Especially females in my German background family tend to do that quite often . Just like Anita would do when she was with Keith. But some people probably drive them right over the bend LOL Okey I got to get back to work now. Bathroom Coffee Smoke Then Paper And food Then paper and more coffee In that order. Shit it’s Friday already Hey an anthropologist said to me one time at some point in the field you have just seen everything twice and there is nothing more to see. That’s when you got enough to put it down. But Going against that school of thought a bit there are always these little little known gems out there and just when you thought you seen and heard it all. Along comes a Robert Johnson Recording that had been up in an attic for years and years and someone discovers and someone gets their paws on it and it gets put out there and all of a sudden it gets listened to and it turns into a cool Stones Cover for BLEED. Or maybe few people have ever heard that particular interview and it was just up in an attack somewhere. And all of a sudden it’s a further glimpse into the making of Exile or has good shit about STICKY FINGERS and it gets out to a wider audience. I’m sure Keith would love it too. Time is in a bottle When I heard it I knew almost 100% you and me had not come across that one. It’s a bit different from one’s I’ve heard before. He doesn’t usually say it’s my band. Meaning he is the leader of the BAND part. Although it’s true and I think that’s how we understand it. I’ve seldom heard him say in interview MY BAND , MY SONGS... but all TRUE I’ve read it. I think. But not listened to him say it.

I was in college when this album was released. I had been the biggest Stones fan. So much so people made fun of me, saying that I would just wait until the next Stones album would be slipped beneath my door. However, this album, EXILE, to me, was a huge disappointment. I know many won't agree with me, but it just sounded sooo weak. I analyzed it, at the time, assessing how the Beatles had just broken up, and the Stones had, it has always looked like, based much of their career, their songwriting and their style on competing with the Beatles, which I believe is obvious. But when the Fab Four broke up, the Stones were set adrift with nothing to use as a marker or a mirror. So, they created Exile, a very loose collection of under-produced, under-written songs, in my most personal estimation. Again, I know that many won't agree with me, and the one radio hit from the record was good.... But, what does anyone otherwise remember about this effort, or wish to hear repeated from it, either on the radio or in a live concert? I still stand by my 18 year old opinion. Even though many will not agree with me.

thanks for sharing your thoughts. There is no way I will say you're wrong. It does not click for you, and you hear something totally different. When that happens, we just move on. What I will disagree with is your Beatles comparison. Might as well just say who is better Clash or Sex Pistols. I will stop there.

@@FlipSideCT I'd hoped to convey just how much of a Stones fan I was at the time. But I will admit that there was another major factor which I believe affected the making of this album : the end of the Sixties, which was a dream to have experienced. Plus, "Altamont", what was intended to be west coast Woodstock 2.0, as imagined by Jerry Garcia, became a disaster that included murder - just as the Stones were performing. In the docu-film about this concert one can see Mick crying while watching a replay of that dark moment. I believe this really shook these guys up. Making their entering into 'the seventies' very uncertain for them. Understandably so.
