That was fun the in-depth history lesson for The Rolling Stones' 'IORR' album, Steve/FlipSideCT ! I think the back history of what was going on in the World then and with the band helped inform this review and, what was going on then probably on some level informed the music, too. I will have to break out the album this weekend and give it another lesson. I have the most recent 2009 CD remaster. Not sure what the definitive version on CD or LP is for sound quality ? Looking forward to Part-2 !

Nice job, Steve! My only nitpick is that The Stones most certainly knew the Brussels shows were being recorded. They were being recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The shows were broadcast in the fall of 74.
@FlipSideCT6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick! I surely invite your geekness and comments. How about this...The boots were compiled for Europe 73, Bedspring Symphony and Brussels Affair. They did include an assortment of the radio broadcasts which also included King Biscuit Flower Hour. The new releases from I think 2011 were pulled exclusively from the two Brussels shows and they were taken from the original multi-track masters recorded by Andy Johns, and he used the Stones Mobile Studio. Bob Clearmountain did that mix. So I could have worded it that way. Keith's comment was from hearing Andy's soundboard recording. But you are right then in saying they did know it was going out for broadcast, but I believe they did not know it was being recorded by Andy. thanks for your input!! feel free to add anything. steve

Sure. After years of listening to IORR as it is, it was time for a little refreshment. You know, I am glad that they just are. And also, am grateful that I am. Inspired by Hackneys to go back to their discography I played with the sequencing of the original songs on IORR it for a bit, checked it while driving (best way for me to enjoy music), and was inspired to add stuff that was recorded in that time. Also, they are just humans and artists and what is on the album and what has been finished for the album is the the product of circumstances. Art is what we / you / I make of it. Great stuff you are doing. Pleasurable and rewarding story telling, editing... Passion is obvious and can be felt. Love it. Appreciate it. Keep on playing well and spreading love@@FlipSideCT

Lots to say about this one... I really really got into the band in '88 after a friend rented the '81 concert film Lets Spend the Night Together. We loved it and I went out and got the Hot Rocks tape. Then my mom's freind gave me It's only rockn roll for my birthday that year - I was 13. It was the first studio album of theirs I owned and listened to it over and over. Not that its their best, but for me it epitomizes what the Stones as a 70s rock band are. They were so many things over the years... Outside of the usual Taylor and Woody tidbits, there isn't a lot of intrigue to these sessions. I think because Milker was gone and Keith seemed a little less distracted and not as tired, both he and Mick had to be and were more much professional as they took on the producers roles and worked in regular studios vs Keith's basement and Jamaica. There is a mix of familiar ideas with new inspirations, both of which come together so well and fresh, with some amazing playing and performances. This here is very seasoned and knowledgeable band. I can listen to it all the way through every time. The one complaint is if you really want to be my friend is a little too long. I'll save commenting on the songs for the next part, but apart from the usual lack of sharing royalties, I think Taylor valued his extensive guitar abilities too much. Sure they were often wonderful, but that's not song structure per se from a credit point of view perhaps. However, I'm not in the know with what he fully did, just what I hear.
@FlipSideCT2 жыл бұрын
Nice commentary JC.....yes, the Stones had their model they followed and delivered what they felt at that moment in the studio. Love their artistry as no one can come close. They had their formula.... Mick T just help molded the product to a more polished piece. A shame he could not bring the same in his solo side, but it was more about the vocals.

I loved this when it came out . I'm a second generation Stones fan and this turned the page that I hoped for .Im very progressive and my interests are all over the place . When Taylor left I had many friends tell me the Stones were done . All Taylor to me ❓No . I didn't fall into Taylor being the most important member. Taylor was a great guitarist but never a Rolling Stone to me. Show boat guitarist like many lead guitarist. I was into the Faces at the same time and Wood was a Stone before he joined. When Black n Blue came out I was thrilled ,but not many liked it . I didn't care.Wood saved the Stones to me . Taylor drifted away from the weave . Ronnie brought it back . Best Live performances were from 75 on up . 78 Live I was up front and all were operating on all cylinders equally. " Respectable " Live and many more put all the doubters on their heels and there wasn't many complaining about Taylor being gone and many raved about Wood . I'm seeing them today and will miss Charlie dearly ,but will be routing for Jordan . He was blessed by Charlie and that's good enough for me . Jordan isn't just a shoe in . I saw him with the "Wino's " and he'll play with time's ten the dedication for Charlie as he did with Keith . 😎

Sounds like your are a serious Stones head Brian and see the Stones as they are. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I do not know why there were not more Faces fans, if they enjoyed RnR, and could not see Ronnie as one. As a guitarist, I just love both Mick/Ron's contributions. Taylor was a one guitar band player as we see that is what he became primarily as time went on. We all have our thoughts, and no one is right or wrong. 78 was surely raw, loud and raunchy what Stones RnR is about. Yes, Jordan will cover Charlie and listen to play to his style, I am just curious what will happen in a studio though. Hope you enjoyed this doc and my others. cheers

I really believe it's instinctive with him and everyone he performs with gets that. I think I'm right about him , because I was wrong. At six years old until I was sixteen I hated the Stones . One of the reasons I fell to the dark side is they didn't quit like the Beatles . That really bothered me ,and at eighteen I was sold and put me Beatles records on the bottom shelf. That's the reason why when Taylor quit I thought good riddance and knew the Stones against what people said about them being done I was excited for the new beginning and I think I was right especially after the other night . 😎❗

Superb video Steve - all your research was well worth it. It seems that the album title perfectly reflects everything that was going on around it! I'm very much looking forward to Part 2. Cheers, Ian

[TINGLE] Brother Steve's on stage and it's one of those nights! The main 3 backing players alone - Ian, Nicky and Billy - were a better talent than many bands at the same time. As a kid, I remember hearing my dad play the snot outta this gem. I've been up and down in the VC over the last 3-4 months, but this, THIS is VC defibrillation. Very excited to see part 2. I hope other albums will follow. You couldn't have selected a better band, pal ;) Cheers

I'm one of the few that loves IORR...In my opinion i like it much better then Goats Head Soup...Luxury is one of my Fav Stones songs. Fingerprint File another great song If you cant Rock Me Ain't to proud to Beg with the sloppy Keef solo I love it! The Title song I think is a much better studio song then live. Till the next time and If you really want to be my friend I love both those songs and Keith's back up vocals through out the entire album are spot on...My least favorite song is Dance little sister...I think its a very underrated sand over looked Stones album. But that's just me..It would make my top 5 fav Stones albums. I forgot Short & Curlies i like and of course Time waits for no one i think a great song with really good Mick Taylor guitar..

you sound like a good Stones fan. There is no reason not to like any album. A different feel for every album, and anyone can be listened to anytime and still get a rush hearing it. Yea, IORR has brilliance to it, and we know how to hear it! thanks for commenting!!

You are the man Steve - gold rings on you. I'm not asking how you get this info - Jumping Jack Flash doco was awesome and am currently watching Beggars pt 1. You draw startling and common sense conclusions as well. If I believed in conspiracy theories I'd think you were an agent for the Stones allowing us fans further into Stonesworld lol. Speaking of which would you know the set list the band did for Charlie? Apparently did Route 66 and similar vintage tracks and rocked the event senseless. The Stones implored no one bring phones to the event and or post footage on-line. As far as I can tell only one person has ( another youtube channeler) so I went after him, I said Keith and the boys were coming around to sort him out. I was joking. He got offended. Peace man.

hey GT....I try, and hope that it delivers something worth while, thank you for your kind words and support. I got so pissed off years ago, how folks bashed IORR and others, and had to start this journey. My PLAYLIST has them all listed. Appreciate the comments for sure!! I honestly do / did not know about any Charlie tribute. Shame on the guy posting and not respecting their wishes. He probably had some guilt. thanks for all!

Man, Mick Taylor made alot of mistakes. With the years between touring he could have gotten clean, seen a therapist, Perhaps told the Glimmer Twins he wanted some song writing credits on the side. Perhaps just a raise because I'm sure he was on salary. Even if the credits didn't show up on the album he could have offered to sign a NDA to keep him from quitting. As far as writing his own music there has been almost none of that. Even his best solo song "Leather Jacket" had Stones credit on it. That's why I believe Jagger/Richards deserve most of the credits. No one writes anything of substance when they aren't working with them. I know he had major problems going on but a year of therapy should have fixed that.Which there was plenty of time for. Could have even had a therapist join him on the road. He could have just changed his mind before the work started on B&B. I saw his '58 LP on display at the museum. Hopefully he didn't sell it cheap. Probably worth at least $500K up to a million now. Enough to live out a comfortable life. I get being in a horrible state mentally but that's what therapy is for. I'm sure he was flying on private jets and living in fancy suites. Pretty easy gig. He was a grown adult and should have known better. Imagine leaving The Rolling Stones. Biggest band in the world and blues based. When I saw him at the Bottom Line he was just playing basic bar band blues. I even got bored and the venue was pretty empty. I was standing right in front of him, one of my heroes and I was getting bored. He did get some credits on albums before he even left and had to fight in the 80s. With Charlie gone they could even bring him on for a rocking 8 song run at the halfway point. After Keith's solo spot just start Midnight Rambler and go till JJF as a closer etc. Play the new songs and stuff Taylor wasn't really around for before. But another Stone would be great since we're down to 3. Even if they were cheap and just gave him $25-$50K for the night it sure beats nothing.

Taylor solo career did not seem to go where we really thought it should go. His strongest assets are role playing with others. He does great with Carla Olson. Seeing him in a small venue is memorable however, and a great way to be close to an ex-Stone. I wished they brought him in for the new album.

I love your videos and hope you keep making more. Just a minor point on Mick Taylor's age. I don't know if you're talking about when he joined the Stones, but by the last album with them he was 25/26, not in his early 20s. Sorry to be pedantic. Anyway, keep up the great work.

IORR isn’t a bad album but not great either. It could have been better if they had added some of the outtakes and left the song Luxury in its initial form - Living In The Heart Of Love. Short and Curlies needed dropped for Drift Away. I know some fans like it but Fingerprint File doesn’t do it for me - probably because Keith wasn’t on it.

This is one of the reasons why I made this documentary. For the folks that can not appreciate the Stones greatness and how every album/song delivers something special. But understood that it does not click for you. An album for a deep Stones fan.

I believe Taylor did not expect to be a Stone forever....he was too young and wanted his own thing that could not be achievable as a Stone. But, yes what an era, as his brilliant melodic playing gave them a different explosion. . cheers
