Time Waits for No One is one of the greatest songs of all time! From the lyrics to the delivery, and one of Taylor’s best leads. Jagger’s vocal is awesome!

“Time Waits for No-one” was really their sublime sign-out. After that, with a few notable exceptions, it’s pretty much downhill. But what a run.

Hey Steve thanks for this, another great job for us StonesHeads. I've always loved this record just as much as GHS, I got into them both around the same time late 80s. I saw Mick Taylor on his solo tour in Bath, England, around about 04...the highlight was unquestionably Cant You Hear Me Knocking, and he didn't just stay on the stage, he actually wandered down the aisles playing that killer solo.....it was sparsely attended in a small venue so was a real treat. Cheers mate!

Well done Steve. I know this album like the back of my hand. I love the 69-74 period of the Stones. I don't that anyone would argue that. I like it better than any other period truthfully. They were at the height of their songwriting. Especially on Exile. I did see Keith with the Expensive Winos at the Orpheum in 1988. Great show. It gave me a better look into his playing. Did you see that tour? The 75 Tour was a good one. They did about five songs from IOR&R. Great point out on Taylor's crediting. You may not like what I am going to say here but I never looked at Keith as a lead player. In fact, it was Taylor that gave depth to most of the songs during this five year period. Keith is one of the best rhythm players in the business. But Mick Taylor did it all. Although his songwriting skills..... Time Waits For No One has one of the best solos I ever heard. Although I would say that his solo on 'Can't You Hear Me Knockin' and 'Sway' were definitely in his top five best. What do you think? Some great photos of the band. You topped yourself on this one. Informative and a must for all Stones fans. Way to go Steve-a-rino. You know your Stones~ Rob/Boston

Thank you Rob......well we probably crossed paths at the Orpheum.....as this was the first concert I took my then girlfriend / wife to, and she loved it. I have to go Beggars-Tattoo You, , maybe even up to Emotional Rescue. 75’ was just fantastic as they mixed Exile, GHS and IORR. No issue here with Keith and leads.....he has his straight forward Chuck/RnR leads that says enough. He is all about the riff and Groove. Yes Mick T stood alone, and carried his role perfectly....with smoothness and grace. Ronnie however mastered the Weave with Keith. Yea Mick’s Sway and Winter solos are breathless. Then the Live recordings I just marvel at. Well....I am always looking to do better vids then my last ones.....more Stones reviews to come.....but they are a lot of work. Thanks again Rob O Rino for your great support and contributions. steve

Speechless. So glad you credited and focused Taylor's work. I didn't know the closing solo on 'Time Waits' was one take. Amazing. Karnbach & Bernson's 'Ultimate Guide to the Rolling Stones' notes 'Till the Next Goodbye' was the last song he worked on as a member of the group. Like you, FF is my favourite track. I think it was better live - funkier. Not sure which of the 5 Forum shows your closing video footage here is from, but the rendition of FF of the last show (13 July) is outstanding. I echo your thoughts of the longer/slower version. There's a great 7:07 version on the Midnight Beat boot - 'Acetates' (your source, maybe?). The Love You Live rendition was from the first of two Toronto shows (17-Jun-75). Man. Steve. I could go on and on with how great this is. So great to see live photos with Mick Taylor when he joined in 2012/2013 even if only for Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Midnight Rambler and Satisfaction - but what a trio! Saw both Toronto shows that year. These pics brought back some great memories. PLEASE, tell me you will do more! Taking requests...? ;) Cheers

wow....great job on the comments Jeff. Appreciate it, and so glad you are a geek also. Had a lot of sources for this.....as you see all those books. I just listened to the Killer Long version of FF again....marveling at it, as my shoulders swayed back and forth. I have not yet watched the 75' DVD from LA Forum, the vinyl is a must have....but I know that footage and others are great. I know they did post prod work on LYL.....but that FF track is just soooo good. Lucky you got to see Mick T with them, I never did. I saw him alone in a small bar, and you know how that ended.....no voice. Yea, he stood alone like a main character in a movie, even beside the 2 of them. He held his own....Ronnie however. is great weaving with Keith. Glad you enjoyed it.......yes I want to do more....labour of love....but so much work.....but, I enjoy turning the folks on that do not know or get them. I remember doing this back in 70's and 80's......but now this is easier. I would like to do Beggars - Tattoo. Maybe skip Exile and Sticky as there is to much out there already. cheers my friend you made me smile!!

I do know how his solo gigs end - saw him locally in August 2003. He was excellent. I couldn’t go, sadly, as they met Mick after the show - autographs, pic and all! -Geek

So glad you saw this one.......it is amazing what a few words can do in convincing someone, and drive someone away. Then again, we know some Stones albums takes 3-4 listens which I doubt a critic does. What I find helpful is when many "ordinary folks" post opinions, you can gather more data. cool Paul thanks!! P.S. love your Channel banner!!

@@FlipSideCT Yes, at time Stones albums are an acquired taste. I'm still not fond of Emotional Rescue or Under Cover, but I just need to give them more listens, I think. Dirty Work is another like that, but I've played it enough to really enjoy the album. The banner was a result of me getting sick of everyone talking about The Beatles, who used to occupy my banner space. I'm currently considering one for The Who. Moving forward I'll probably do some kind of rotation. Looking forward to your Let It Bleed series.

Another fab, entertaining, & informative segment all around, Steve/FlipSideCT ! Usually, the so-called music critics site 'Goats Head Soup' as the last album at end of their first golden period in '73 with Jimmy Miller's Production aiding in that effort. However, you might've just made a convincing case for that period being extended over to '74 with 'IORR' ! Many great songs a performances on this classic album like the hits in the title track 'IORR' and 'Ain't' too proud to beg,' I love 'If You Can't Rock me,' 'Dance little sister' is a little repetitive but rockin.' I love 'Time waits for no one' for it's daring to be different and 'Fingerprint File' as well for its' infectious compelling groove. It sounds like a prelude to their later Dance Rock tunes on the 'Some Girls' and 'Undercover' albums.

Just finished watching both parts of your IORR LP review. If I were stranded on a desert island and had only one Stones LP to listen to, it would be this one. Listening to this LP got me through my freshman year in college. Every track is great IMHO. I love all of the different musical styles on this. Mick Taylor really should have received a partial composing credit on Time Waits For No One. It’s an epic track, as some of the Stones were turning 30 during recording, and probably realized they weren’t getting any younger. If You Really Want To Be My Friend is on my Stones workout playlist. I think this LP is among their Top 5, agreeing with your comment that if released today, it would be a masterpiece. 👌

What got me going to create these docs, was, I saw someone compare B&B vs IORR and which one is worse. I flipped out and made it a mission to get the story straight and do it right for the fans and educate them the best I could. Taylor's time was short term by choice and influenced by his wife. The M&K have a model, it is their way or no way. Bottom line they own it! yes a MASTERPIECE for sure. nice to hear thanks!!

@@FlipSideCT I'm fascinated in how they make songs in the studio compared to when they play live. I guess there is no way they can duplicate that sound live which kind of sucks. I saw them in '75 at Buffalo, NY....Sad to say, they were terrible! They came a hour late, had very little backup band support and were basically lifeless and flat in their performance. Keith must of been really strung out at the time. Maybe they felt they could blow it off in a place like Buffalo as compared to L.A. which I see they did a great show there in '75!

@@DaveGoldShow cool you saw the 75's shows. Yes, with the B&B doc I am working on, I am also discussing the US/Europe tour and heard about the June 6th poor Buffalo show. Cheers, Ian
@FlipSideCT6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ian for that....I take it very highly coming from you. I did not mention but will....The Stones are not meant to be background or light listening music, it is meant to be played loud, and with headphones is a plus to get the full impact. If you take a look at the top music hits for 74' I think that is our answer as to "why", as great as the hidden non commercial music was.....it was Radio controlling it all, and minimal periodicals. Thanks for being in tune with me on this, and I hope to get another one out....maybe in 2 months (phew, a lot of work). cheers, steve

As it happens, that's my default listening mode; sat with headphones, album cover on my lap. I've never been able to handle background music as it's too much of a distraction, or just a noise. And with neighbours directly below me and to one side, it's a case of, "One man's ceiling is another man's floor".

I'm sick at the moment,but it gave me time to watch this. You have put a lot of effort in making this one. This is the final album in the series of my fave Stones albums. What surprised me most is that Taylor played less than i expected and Keith more than i expected. Also surprised to find that the bass on Fingerprint File is by Mick Taylor. Wonderful job Steve. Pasi

Hi Steve. Another great video. As you said every time a Stones album was released the critics said not as good as the one before. I have always loved this album since it was first released. Pity mick Taylor didn’t get more credit. Would have loved him to stay in the Stones longer than he did.
@FlipSideCT6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen...thank you! I think we all can say, we are smarter then the critics. Nice that you loved this one from the start.....as this seemed to be one of those grower albums for many. Jagger/Richards did not want any other way then. Just do what you do, give what you got, as you are in the greatest RnR band, and that should be good enough. I was a bit surprised Mick T, did not shed anything at a high level in his future endeavours. He was still great. Both sides did have their A game elevated within the Stones combination.

Great video Steve, really enjoyed your analysis. One thing jumped out at me...in the Victor Bockris Keith biog (p. 227) it states that there is no Keith guitar on the song It's Only Rock'n'Roll. He states that Ron Wood played the riff, though there were rumours that Keith wiped Ron's part and replaced it but these were just rumours. No idea what Bockris' sources are there though. Happy to go with your version! I think Fingerprint File has a real Blaxpoitation feel to it, just one of their finest, most quintessential funky 70's tracks.

Hi James, thank you. I have never seen Bockris’s book.....But in looking up a few comments, folks say he mistates several topics. but as I disclaimed, we dont have 100% knowledge. From the many readings / research I have done , I am glad you go with me on it. yesterday I was at a friend’s house, and talked, he said oh yea Bowie is on the the song......had to correct him. If he was, we would have heard him. Keith was/ is protective of his music. They carried this great funkiness into Black & Blue. cheers...steve

Man, the first three songs on here really gel well and put you into rock'n roll heaven. You gotta wonder how Short and curlies started...both Mick and Keith play and write on the piano. Did one of them come up with the basic paino riff and then have Ian Stewart embelish it; or did Keith lay down a rhythm guitar and Stewart come with the piano.; OR did Stewart come up with this and not get credit? Such a fun little irreverent diddy. As simple as Dance Little Sister is, it's such a fantasic rocker and a true quintessential Richard's, Watts, Wyman song with Jagger fully committing to his own magnificent persona and propelling this sucker far off the ground that they lay - it was an fm staple around here back when I was young. Time Waits for now one is their most sophisticated song to be sure, with an amazing concerted effort by all. Love Richards hauntng main guitar lick, which I assume is what he was talking about when he said he had the intial idea and before the band took it over. Yeah. Taylor's solo is so amazing and he an Nicky move this haunting masterpiece far beyond the reaches of anything the core band could ever do, which is beyond I typically would want from this band. But it's nice here and there such as this. Jagger's fingerprint file riff is such a monster. It's so mean and oozes grit. It's really one of the greatest and most unreconized guitar riffs of all time. The live version doesn't quite work for me. I love Mick's lyrics for Till the Next Time We Say Hoodbye (so vicarious) and Keiths aswome back ups vocals. In regards to outakes. I love the official release of Living in the Heart of love. Wow what a song. Sure it's a little direvative of brown sugar, but it's it's own beast. Keith really laying down some ferice vocals behind Mick. That little piano lick/break is the most usnual and fantastic sounding thing I've ever heard. It just cuts right through the air. And Ronnie's new little solo adds a fresh burst of energy. Fabulous stuff.

Thanks for this excellent review and video. My first ever Stones album, so will always have a special place in my heart. I love the album, but I think it has 3 negatives: Luxury, IYRWTBMF and the track listing. I think I count as a Stoneshead but, despite Luxury having a bunch of good elements - Mick's whoops, Keith's backing vocals (as you say), the sound of his rhythm work, a perfectly serviceable lead - I just don't find it persuasive. For me, it feels like the band didn't know quite what they were doing with it and didn't have their hearts in it. Mick's vocals are silly, but so what; they are too in When The Whip Comes Down, which is fantastic. Anyway, If You Really .. has a killer middle 8 and Taylor lead break, but it isn't really a Stones song. They make it work because they are so good, but the title is twee and it just feels out of place. And I could say a lot about the album's track listing, which is just weird after a killer opening. Anyway, it's fantastic to see and hear your videos. Thanks!

thanks again!! IF IORR came out today, I would think many more would praise it more! I personally take what they gave us 68-82 as golden. I learned to enjoy any sour song. What is different and concerning is the post work after 82. The guitars and especially lyrics went to a different direction. The model broke some. It is taking me much longer to wrap your head around it. I am still working on them. But there are some brilliant newer ones. cheers
@zilefn92123 жыл бұрын
@@FlipSideCT We can't go back and forth, I know, but good point about taking the sour songs. I'm with you there. I too find it harder to love Undercover and Dirty Work. I like both for what they were: efforts by a band in love but at war, and going through a really hard time to keep it together. I remember seeing a Jagger show in the 80s and being embarrassed at his guitar player, who even dressed like Keith, shaking my head and wondering why. Anyway, once they got it together again (thanks, Ronnie!), I like SW, VL and BTB. All have some very fine songs, but for me the gold is that they were by then true stylists. That's where the buzz was to be found. Know what I mean? If you were a casual fan, they were songs; the real fans would go deeper and that's where the gold still lay. Enough, I'll stop now.

You will see a clip on YT of him singing Diamond Dogs / Its only rock and roll in 74', and at the 4:12 mark he goes into IORR chorus..... The Jagger/Richards was their bond and I believe had to do with just the $$. Later on Ronnie was given some credit though. Watching this review, it almost feels like Keith Richards was prepping Ronnie Wood to join the Stones over a year before they pulled the trigger on it happening. The thing is with that, no matter how much you and I love Mick Taylor, and respect Brian Jones, Ronnie Wood is like Ringo Starr was for the Beatles, he was always a member, he just came a little later on in picture to paraphrase a quote heard on the Beatles Anthology.
@FlipSideCT3 жыл бұрын
I would say Keith knew of Ronnie's style prior. Why would he not be jamming with others as much prior. Then again, he was hit upside the head with Taylor leaving. It was still about timing, as the Stones did not want the bad rap of breaking up the Faces. I hear what you are saying with Ronnie as a role side player.....but I have grown to appreciate Ronnie more and more, and put him as fantastic. Give a listen and focus on his playing and lead and slide on the 75/75 tour. It is brilliant shit! I think folks do not give more then he deserves. Which is why I am thinking of Some Girls, as how his little licks and added value comes in.

Ive been watching your Stones LP videos recently and they are fantastic. Your comments on Jagger's vocals are welcome - his mid 70s vocals are quite different from Aftermath, or Sticky Fingers, and predict the affectations he would use on Black and Blue. The album seems to be an attempt to prove their continuing relevance. I much prefer Goats Head as an album, but If You Cant Rock Me and the title song are wonderful. If You Really Want to Be My Friend is good. Time Waits For No One thematically fits but imo is too cliched. And I find Taylor's solo, sorry to say, predictable and overly linear. My overall feelings are mixed about IORR. There is a tired vibe but again we start to see the influence of mid- 70s black styles that would be mastered on B&B, a much hotter record imo!
@johnryan39133 жыл бұрын

MT was naive on how Mick and Keith worked. They were very territorial with getting the credit of Jagger/Richards on all their songs. He was younger and not nearly as worldly as them....It seems they had a sink or swim attitude for him and themselves! MT couldn't hang! But he said his life felt threatened so in the long run he probably made the right move in bailing out! Can't imagine the band lasting all these years with him in there instead of Ronnie who did match the Glimmer Twins mentality and helped keep them together as I'm sure you'll cover if and when you get to the 80's and beyond! I'm 2 years late to this party, but I watched this right after your Goats Head box set review. I think IORR and GHS have similar strengths, and similar weaknesses. For me, both albums have very strong side 1's, and unravel on side 2. We differ in that I always felt IORR is a stronger album than GHS. I NEVER was put off by Time Waits for No One; I thought it was the strongest song on that side, and Taylor's solo is not good, it's FIRE! Having owned Johnny Winters's version of Silver Train months before the Stones released their version, I couldn't believe how lifeless their version sounded. I always thought the mix sucked, but the remix proves it was poorly recorded and performed. Luxury is a better song. Hide Your Love is just wasted space, but Dance Littler Sister is fire. I think Winter is an overblown mediocre ballad, and Can You Hear the music is simply uninteresting. The only spot where GHS wins is the side 2 closer - Star Star. I still don't care for Fingerprint File. The Stones would go on to make far better funk songs (Hot Stuff, Hey Negrita, Miss You). Fingerprint File is tepid, and Mick's "rap" is embarrassing and comical. My 2 cents.
