I've built several of these. The last one I built I added carbon spars to the wings and tail, and I used epoxy to coat the edges of rudder and elevator. Super strong and fast!

I built it yesterday, went and flew it today. It flew very well, flies fast, had a lot of fun, broke the motor and firewall off eventually, but was able to keep going with some judicious rubber band usage. I went with putting the battery inside the power pod as didn't like the thought of landing on it. Thanks for the design and the video, love your website.

How remarkable is this?? A casual observer would say, "it's just a bunch of DT foamboard!" I can't stress how WRONG such a statement would be--the experience level which has gone into the current designs such as this is creating sophistication in airframe assemblies and flight performance that would never have been imaginable before. I congratulate the Flite Test crew for promoting this affordable and rewarding entry into RC flying, we would all be poorer without your fine efforts. God Bless!!

Great helpful Videos for Kit and Scratch build. I loved the look of this aircraft so I decided to build two by buying the Kit and Scratch building the second. I have started with the scratch build built from the plans and tracing the kit parts. I have practice built a Fus and Wings to my own design, a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with the results. Although I have a good Glue Gun, I much prefer rto use a good waterproof PVA, as this gives you time to assemble straight and correct. Use masking tape to hold the parts together when curing. The wing LE bevel should be 50=60 degrees or youll overstress the paper at the hinge point, if only 45 degrees. Still. I used colored Gaffa tape to reinforce the LE paper at the hinge. Realising the Ppwer Pod will not be easily removable, I decided to Velcro the Lipo under the P Pod. To fully secure the lipo cut two slots in the Pod base with thin ply reinforcement. so you can pass a velcro strap thru and firmly secure the Lipo during aerobatics. The plan does not show a front P Pod cutout necessary to clear the C folded part of the fus front. Well. Ive really into these builds, and have two Baby Blenders waiting to build. A great advantage of these builds is there is loads of room in the Power Pod to add a gyro stabliliser unit and even GPS and FPV. Thanks again for your great service Guys......back to building, for me!

I have built 3 of your Bloody Baron’s. I have some building suggestions and wanted to show you the modifications I have made. 1. I always have trouble doing the bevel for the hinges on the flight surfaces. This is how I now do them: a. Using a metal rule with a cork backing (so it does not slip), I hold it about a quarter inch from the folded edge. b. Hold my knife against the straight edge and guide it along the folded edge of the hinge. Gives a nice straight cut with the appropriate angle. 2. Painting a. Paint before attaching the wing and the tail feathers and the servos. b. Be sure to mask those areas there the pieces are glued together. c. I have used both Krylon and Rust Oleum. Be sure to give a very light seal coat and allow to dry so the paper does not lose adhesion to the foam. 3. I disliked landing on the battery. Cut a hole in the bottom of the Power Pod and used magnets to hold hatch in place. Battery is attached to the bottom of the fuselage reached through the hatch. ESC is attached to the side of the Power Pod aft of the hatch. 4. I had two issues with the design - landings were fast (resulting in broken props) and the ailerons were very sensitive, even with limited travel and a lot of expo. To solve both problems, I spit the ailerons in half, made the inner portion into flaps and the outer portion as ailerons. Used two servos on the ailerons connected by a ‘Y” harness, and two servos on the flaps, also connected by a “Y” harness. Both harnesses were run inside the wing. Need to mix in some down elevator when the flaps are deployed. Ailerons still have plenty of authority, but not as touchy and landings are slower with flaps deployed.

That was one of the best build videos I've seen in a long, long time! Very clearly explained, Josh; and seeing the plane flown immediately after the build is complete is a great way to wrap up an extremely informative video. Well this 'Quick Build' has been rewarding and a nightmare challenge for me. Finally, I have a finished, balanced, great looking Bloody Baron! Cons FoamBoard is a great cheap material but you must be so creful and diligent when cutting and working with it. A Sharp Blade is a MUST. Ive found a sorce of 50 budget blades, each blade only good for about 3 long cuts. Next, your work surface must be kept impecably clean at all times, or you will end up scrapping the workpiece damaged with indentts. I am a pretty experienced builder and never got on with Hot Glue, it cools too quickly (I have a very good Glue Gun. So the answer is to use a waterproof PVA adhesive and Masking Tape. That gives you time to work and produces good results. OK it takes time to cure but patience is a virtue. The Power Pod is not deep enough to comfortably hold a 3S Lipo on Velcro so add another 5mm or about 1/4 inch depth. The front 2 BBQ Dowel positions interfere with internal Power Pod Lipo fitting, so I just used the middle dowel at a position to clear tyhe Lipo rear. The downward air intake will intefere with front internal Pod components, so make air intake holes in ply motor firewall or completely cut out the shaped air intake. PROs The Hot Glue trick on the foam edges works billiantly. There is ample space for Lipo, Gyro Stabilizer ESC and Rx inside the Power Pod . The complete model less electronics can be easily sprayed with 1 1/2 spray cans. My model is so pretty that I dont wat to crash it, so I easily fitted a full gyro stabliser module and starting with a 2S 1500mA Lipo. A couple of 50p coins glued behind the firewall sorted the COG balance. By the way, protect the Lipo from any protruding fireall motor mounting screw heads. Well this has been a scratch build, but I have a kit on the shelf to build with experience gained. Good Flying not a good starter building construction! By the way sanding block is much safer for the bevels and use Mylar hinges for a more accurate and robust build. Now Ive missed my swimming session!

I got the plans for this. I am a MISERABLE cutter of foam. My scoring goes through the paper from time to time. Funny thing is back in the 80s when my buddy was alive I built balsa planes and he made them look good. Anyhow I have a wing built with a packing tape leading edge. Now all I have to do is afford a motor, speed controller etc. and also a Radio.

A bottom on the fuse would greatly increase strength by closing the box. Could then do away with the rear weight of the doublers. Also encloses the battery so it does not detach on impacts.

I learned the hard way with a 600 size helicopter you want 2 throttle cuts. It's too easy to bump one switch. That and as soon as I power on the transmitter I verify the throttle stick is all the way down and BOTH throttle cuts are enabled. Plane, quad or helicopter - I do the above with all of them.

Well thts has been a largely rewarding scratch build and I now have a red sprayed almost completed Baron less some decals and electronics. Im having trouble with the power pod fitting mine was precision fitted but it would be better to leave a looser fit to enable easy tab locations. As not enough head room for an underslung Lipo without u/c it will have to fit inside the pod. I have made two spare pods and I think they will be useful as this is not a durable item. Considering the care to not damage the foam during build I dont think these are speed build. The Power Pod could do with a doubler on the base to make it more durable. Maybe BBQ dowels wpuld be better for Pod locarion rather than weak tabs

+rob bennett There are plenty of people that have built and flown this as a first plane as well. If you stick to the smaller motor and a light setup, you can learn to fly RC with this plane. I learned to fly with the FT Bloody Wonder, and the Baron has very similar flight characteristics. That said, there are other planes that are better suited to beginners.
@robbennett9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Sponholz I know you can but i wouldn't recommend it. But I've never flown the plane with the flitetest recommend motor and battery. Mine was a much bigger motor with a 2200 lipo. It was crazy fast and dropped like a rock with no throttle. I loved it. (bloody micks design)

@DanielSponholz9 жыл бұрын
+Gavin Powell The Velcro that you get in the FT kits is enough to hold up to a 2200 mah 3s for sure. I've never had one come off in flight. Crashing, sure. Crazy aerobatics no. When I fly combat with my Barons and Wonders, I usually use a 1300 mah 3s/4s and I keep it inside the power pod. You can even stuff a 2200mah 3s in the pod. Just make sure that you put some cushion (I use foam) between the battery and the motor shaft and any screws that might turn your LiPo into a small explosive device.
