Flitetest Building for Noobs (Part 2)

Tips and tricks I use to build my Flitetest planes from the downloaded PDF plans. I will go over some of the things I have done to streamline the process of going from a PDF file to foam board parts.

This is extremely Valuable!! Liking the method of poking through the bottom paper, then flipping the Wing, and finishing the cut on the other Side!!!

I attach the templates to the foam with small pieces of that blue (low tack) masking tape so the template can't shift while I'm tracing. When you come around to a piece of tape just remove it, trace under it and put it back. It takes a little more time but I get pretty good results. Good video by the way.

I feel so much more confident in making a pattern now. I tried to spray adhesive the pattern to the foam board. Didn't go well. I think your way is much better.

adhesive spray pattern to bristle board. then cut out. you have a patern you can use over and over.

If you tape the pattern to the foamboard in a few places, it holds it in place. The tape won't tear the foamboard as you state, because after you cut through the tape, the tape is left on the scrap. The piece of tape left on your plan won't hurt it.

For the inside cuts/scores/marks use a stick pin 📍 to put a tiny hole through the plan and barely into the foam board. Then remove the plan and connect the dots with pencil (or your razor if immediately cutting / scoring)

The way I do it is with Elmer's spray glue. Cut two sides off of each page as explained in part 1. But then just flip all the pages over and lightly spray with spray glue. Let sit a couple minutes so the glue just becomes tacky, then stick the pages to the foam board (match them up and be exact of course). Cut everything out and then peel the pages off. I think this is a quicker and easier method than the taping and tracing method shown here...

I agree, that’s the way I do it and it’s quicker. The only thing is you need to print a new set of paper plans each time but the cost is minimal.

one additional tip to your score cuts - if you're a beginner you might consider starting with the scored cuts cause if you mess that up all the other work wasn't for nothing

What kind of cutting mat do you recommend. Size and company would be helpful.

Very helpful. I'm going to try scratch building. I went to Michaels to buy foam board and it looks like to me that the quality of the foam board is so much better from Michaels than buying the laser cut kit foam from flite test. Do you find that to be true? thanks

The foam at Michael’s will be sturdier, but the paper doesn’t come off as easily and it’s a lot more expensive. You’d also want to see how it behaves under stress. Some foam boards are more susceptible to denting, and some will resist forces better than others (ripping vs. deforming)

I found some foam board at target-Elmors Brand. Its very durable and a little heavier than most others. If the CG is good and the plane is balanced, should it matter if the plane is a little heavier. I found the elmors brand to be the most durable. thanks

I just built a mini arrow. I started with 2 sheets of Elmers foam board, but screwed one up so made one wing out of Elmers and the second wing from Dollar Tree foam board. Big mistake!! The Elmers board was much heavier than the other. When doing a side-to-side balance check, it rolled over. I needed to add 12g of led weight to the far wing tip of the Dollar Tree foam board wing. I also have a very tail heavy CG.

I like the elmers foam board cause its really durable. It's like an EPO foam plane. But youre right. I wouldnt use half for one side. Look at target for the 3 panel folding display foam board by Elmors. It comes in white and black and 2 sizes. Ive been using that and its working great. Let me know how it works.

How many milimeters thick is that foamboard? And can i build planes from epp foamboard without paper?

it's about 4-5mm thick. These plans are based on foamboard with paper so it may not work with ones without paper.
