Filmed a while back now, so thankfully I've sorted everything - but what a weekend this was!
Journey is from Whitley Lock at Eggborough on the Aire and Calder, North Yorkshire all the way down to Barnby Dun on the River Don, South Yorkshire - via the New Junction Canal.
Nathan @ Hirst Boatbuilders in Knottingley - 07909 595452
Filmed on an iPhone 6, edited using iMovie. Except for the outro, 'Blue water' by Blackrock feat. Debra Andrew (choonz mate), all music is made by me, so got to stick a ©RobbieCumming on that. Available here: / cobedy
If you'd like to force me into making more videos, you can support the vlog by joining the 'Crank It Crew'. It's a pretty cool gang to join, they all get to see the videos first and updates on where I am, and some even get a special shoutout on the video, with access to exclusive Crank It Crew clothing…
/ robbiecumming
Alternatively, if you want to buy me a beer and have your name down as sponsor of the Pub of the Week segment, you can do so via my PayPalMe page: paypal.me/crankit
Thanks for your support in general - it’s amazing, and very much appreciated 8^}

Hi Robbie. Always enjoy your videos. As an offshore boater myself, Ive found it useful to keep money for emergencies hidden on the boat. Emergencies are like what just happened to you with the charge card going missing. If you have PAYPAL... a PAYPAL debit card hidden on the boat is useful........ or indeed a Post Office debit card. I learned the hard way to only take one card with me when going out... As I live in Spain, I usually only take out the Post Office Mastercard debit card which can be used in ATMs and as a CC. Just load the card with monies to the amount you want and the job is done. Here is a tip ... wrap a rubber band around your wallet with card in or money, and it will be difficult to remove from a pocket as the rubber grips to the pocket lining...

A tip I learned is to use a cheap plastic dustpan as a flood bailing scoop. Gets right down to the metal hull, so less mopping / sponging to do.

Sorry to see the flood mate. We had similar on our recent trip when some plumbing behind the washing machine went pop. I got a hand bilge pump (by 'Whale', cost about 20 notes) that did a great job. Much quicker than sponges or cups etc. All dry now on our boat so hope same for you by now. Keep on cranking it! D

You might want to get a battery operated pump wand. It works great for getting into tight spaces or when you need to pump out the fuel from a tank, some are even suited for pumping out oil. I bought one for pumping out the fuel in my watercraft.

Not long been on my boat but flooded under the boards too because their is a hole.in my water tank...empty the tank by running the tap, will cause the bow to lift, then run the bilge pump at the back where all the water will flow to :)

Watching all your videos from the first to the latest… just finished this one. I’ve liked the acoustic guitar songs in your videos for a while & wondered if they were Robbie Cumming originals. As I typically watch them on our XBox One, I don’t there’s a way to see the “text & links below.” Finally, today I got around to using my iphone to read the “text & links below.” Sure enough, it *is* you playing the guitar. Excellent! Great songs & well recorded. Bravo!

Best thing for getting up water like that apart from a small pump, is a dust pan, from a dust pan and brush set. I really hope you dry out soon, it's been terrible weather and everything must be so damp in there, even the air? Chin up matey, keep cranking it :-D

Robbie Cumming I'm not getting to the lake as much as I like to. Are camper is in need of some much needed repairs. We have a bad leak & it would cost more to fix if we would just go trade it in & get a good used one. When we go to the lake we fish & I swim hard. So it's nice to have a place to come back to, with AC & rest a bit before traveling an hour 1 way, plus being disabled we get are camp spot for 1/2 price so it's cheap to stay a week & catch a lot of fish. When we get are credit card paid off, we're going to go get a used camper or a new one. Which ever is cheaper in are books, bc I really don't want someone else's problem if you know what I mean. My husband & I just talked about that the other night. Are you reading my mind.. lol.. But we're going to get 2 new batteries for the big boat, bc I can sleep on the seat if I get tired. That way, if no one's around, I can take a skinny dip.. hehehe I've only done that 1 time in my late 30's. True story. Now I'm in my mid 50's so I guess I'm in titled for being a good girl all my life.. lol.. I've got to admit it's kinda fun. Plus on weekdays there's no traffic on the lakes here & we can hit a cove where no one can see. Living life after 50 is great.. Just want to get the batteries in the big boat & a camper that don't leak. Then I'm in haven. Or buy a houseboat & live on it all year long. That's my dream. Chris

@@RobbieCumming Just watched the one (14) about the overheating narrowboat engine, more woe! Reminds me of things though, I had a wee 27 foot yacht in and around the Clyde and had a few nailbiting moments Out playing in fairly rough weather with no working foresail, using the engine because of the sail problem, when there was a pop and a huge cloud of steam from the cabin, a cooling hose had blown off. Great fun sailing back and onto a mooring with only one useable sail. The other less spectacular one was an oil pressure warning light that came on with no wind so engine needed and not in sight of land. These things are sent to make life a bit more interesting! Pity vlogging wasn't a thing back then!

Oh really? Actually that's usually the criteria I look for - how far away from the canal is it?! If it's right next to it that's not good... usually those are the most soulless, just in it for the tourist trade, however there are some notable exceptions (like the Steam Packet here!)

Sorry if already asked or covered before or after this episode but what length is your narrowboat and its a traditional? Are you happy with its size and style or what would you get if you could buy again? Thanks. I think I’m looking at a 50-55ft trad but need to actually go and step on board a few I think. Thanks dude.

That’s awesome thank you for watching! Yeah best way is to view a few. My boat is a trad stern and at 42ft it’s more than enough space for me. I simply couldn’t afford any bigger but it’s a great size and good for turning. Would like to buy a 50ft trad next.

dont paint it. dry it out then sand it well. Once done rubb 2 coats of linseed oil into it. Less blisters and last longer. Reapply linseed oil as needed or once a year. Works with any wood implements. Just put some oil on a rag and rub it on. doesn't take much and wood lasts longer.

I don't see when you would ever need an anchor. A couple of rods to drive into the bank I can see but not an Anchor, that is for open water and your narrow boat is not an open water boat. Just my opinion.
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 7 жыл бұрын
You're right Honor my boat isn't seaworthy - but an anchor is essential if you're on any river, tidal or otherwise - if your engine cuts out and you drift towards a weir, even very slowly - it's game over 8^\
@Quackalott
@Quackalott 7 жыл бұрын
As you might know, there are many unpredictable situations that can happen suddenly, especially if on a river like getting the prop. properly;) fowled, engine overheated an losing all thrust and steering while slowly being taken by the current or wind towards a rather/very bad situation is just one I've been in, where without it you might lose your boat/home an everything in it. If you only ever need it once you'll be freaking glad you have it. Now sling your hook. ;-)

If I caused offence then.. I guess that is what it is and, maybe I should of stressed that I meant "sling ya hook" strictly in the nauticle term rather than the wink ;-) I used too depict that, but no offence meant or intended Robbie, I was just trying to be funny and I like homonyms!
@RobbieCumming

David rather vehemently claims to have no interest in speed or power, yet he has almost 3 times as much power as you or Kevin, and suggested he has some interest in torque, by which he appears to mean the ability to go 4 mph at very low RPMs for a more pleasant sound. I suggested a very steep prop to both heighten this effect and increase fuel economy, but David has not commented on that. What is your fuel mileage? Kevin has reported 9mpg at times.

I used to run a couple of facebook groups, but my real account got frozen when I changed cellphones, leaving me with just the fakes. I dabble in boat tech when I burn out on politics, but do some repair work on older cars and small engines. My brother is a naval architect.
@alan6832
@alan6832 6 жыл бұрын
As far as naval architecture, I think more use could be made of the narrowness of narrowboats if they had finer, sharper, ends, with which they could slice through the water like those racing rowboats, which have so much less wash, and fuel, at the same speed than their tenders as you have noticed, at only small cost in interior space. David might benefit from a steeper prop, but you and Kevin need all the power you have, since you have so much less power and buck more challenging currents with that less power.
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting.... I’d like to see that sort of design out on the cut. One day I will at least buy a more powerful engine. Quieter might be good for the videos too. Friend of mine has a volvo engine (not sure which) in his narrowboat and it goes like the clappers, however he can’t travel too far due to work commitments. What a shame!
