Great vid dude :) 60/40 for CC's and 40/60 for marina based boats seems somewhat of theme with boaters I know, regardless of diesel heater or not. Diesel running costs on a NB aren't too expensive anyway. Folks being folks there will always be those that choose to cheap out. Love the Adams family boat at 4.56 !

I used to work in a marina shortly after the fuel duty was introduced, so it was my job to explain it to everyone. I still use that as my "describe a new challenge" answer in job interviews.
@RobbieCumming7 жыл бұрын
No way! That sounds interesting/frustrating at the same time! Must have come across some pretty confused people - hell I was the first time I heard of it! 8^)
@MockTrial20077 жыл бұрын
Yeah, particularly if they were from far afield; it was - I don't want to say "proper" marina, because that's insulting to the canals - but it was a marina for seagoing yachts so there were a lot of transatlantic and European sailors who just assumed I was scamming them. And there were definitely some wrong'uns who were fairly liberal with their self-declarations!

Hi Robbie. Great vids mate. I'm a continual cruiser and I used to do a 60 / 40 split until one boat yard told me to do 0% when buying red and keep my receipts from filling up with white diesel at a garage for my vehicle as red with tax is more expensive than white. Quite a lot of boaters do this but of course it only works if you have a diesel vehicle. On an other note , when are you gonna do the Staffs and Worcester and the Gloucester sharpness. some great boozers around there .
@RobbieCumming7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Del! Interesting advice, no idea about that myself but generally it seems HMRC aren't that bothered as none of the boaters/boat yards/marinas I've talked to have said anyone has been investigated. S&W and G&S - not sure, but I expect that might be this autumn or next spring, will have to see. Cheers!

HAH! :-) .... you remind me of a Mate of mine....... Back in the late 60's/70's he had a rather nice Ford Anglia we all used to loaf around in ... Pub-Crawls, Coast etc, etc. At the start of 'every' journey he'd set his Trip-ometer and at the end of the evening/day/journey he'd calculate how many miles we'd done and divide it by how many of us in the car + a bit for 'Wear & Tear' (Usually his portion) ....... YEP!! :-) We'd all have to put the 'exact' amount into the kitty and then he was happy........ (He's still a 'Tight-Arse' today .... A jolly nice bloke though ... So don't worry ;-)

@RobbieCumming7 жыл бұрын
That's why I make these videos Sylvia! I keep forgetting where I've been! Not sure about hours but I do remember being in Birmingham this time last year so we could say well over 300 miles with all the faffing around that comes with having a boat.
@richH16256 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking Sylvia. But does that mean it's getting on for £1 per mile? (idk how many hours the "charging batteries twice a week" would amount to ..... 104 x n hours?) 300miles ...100hours faffing .... ~100hours ? ~~~~~~~ ! all rhetorical really, I've no plans to buy a boat but I do find it interesting.

OK, I live here in the Western U.S. and have only stopped in the UK once on the way home in the service. I appears to me that as a boat, You pass on the right and use the right side of the canal, the same way we use our highways. Is this true or have i just noticed something? Great videos, love the idea of a live-aboard boat. Actually, my Bride and I are begging the fit-out of an ole school bus to travel around our country. Sadly there are no canals.

vegetable oil / cooking oil as Economical Diesel Fuel - please look for it in youtube. There are many films to see about the stuff. For the engine you will need a separate tank or canister. All other consumers still need the normal diesel. The older the engine, the better it goes with the rapeseed oil.

To put it into perspective, 320 pounds is roughly $422.00 US. (Sorry I am a US viewer so had to do some googling lol) $422.00 isn't bad at all for an entire year. I spend roughly $100.00 per WEEK to commute to work in my little 32MPG Ford Focus.

How do you have light on your boat, how do you have anything electrically powered.? At least two hours of running your engine each day is required to charge your batteries up, that's moving if you can, or just moored up. Anything over two hours you could split less than 100pc, but once a week you need to charge for eight hours, all domestic needs. You must move a lot to pay any duty, 20 hours minimum should be duty free per week.
@RobbieCumming5 жыл бұрын
Two words my friend: Solar panels!
@tim0405 жыл бұрын
Wow you must have a lot of solar wattage, I have solar , but not as much as you , so I don’t pay a split, always 100pc domestic for me

I thought you could do 60/40 if you used diesel to charge your batteries. You may have explained this in the vid...I've only just woken up...and I'm feeling a bit 'normal for Norfolk'. £6 for logs is naughty....are you still using your burner?
@RobbieCumming7 жыл бұрын
60/40 yep, it was in writing halfway through. No log burner now but when I stopped back in April I thought 'best be prepared' as it can be hard to find fuel and it was a bit nippy. Should've just scrounged some as there's loads of good firewood to be had on the Ouse.
