The PS1 port of DOA1 was actually the first appearance of both Bass and Ayane! Then put in doa++, a arcade version based on the PS1 version. So just DOA1 went from arcade sega model 2 hardware, saturn port, ps1 port, doa++ in arcade, then DOA1 ultimate on xbox is based on the saturn version because it was itagaki's favorite.

DoA as a series is an underrated gem. 6 much less so and the whole DLC thing, but I have nothing but positive memories. Even Xtreme1 was really solid as a volleyball game, even if you took the overly sexy elements from it. Xtreme 2 and 3 were much… well they had more but the substance felt less so when the character interraction and CPU difficulty was so much more fun in 1. My first was Ultimate (DOA2 with improved visuals on xbox) Then I found my mains in 4 (cuz i couldnt find 3 at the time). Christie and Brad Wong.

My first and only experience with DOA1 was in the Ultimate compilation on Xbox. I kinda took it for granted because I felt it was too primitive compared to 2 Ultimate and 3 on the same console. I have more of an appreciation for older fighters now, so I'd definitely give this a shot again

It feels like almost every game and anime from Japan when having a character from the USA, they gotta have them with the most obviously-not-from-Japan traits on the character... such as blond hair and blue eyes. That's probably the only reason I can think of... Though in doing so, they made Tina look TOO similar to Helena after this game. Also for Ryu Hayabusa having a curio shop... I think it's in reference to all the ancient evil macguffins he's always come across from his games in Ninja Gaiden

i'd vouch for a DOA5 video. Last Round is definitely the version to choose as a heads up. dlc Costumes from vanilla and ultimate are included as unlocks, so theres 1 or 2 classics outfits if you just play.

I remember seeing a segment on some G4 show about all the measures the dev team went through in order to capture the ideal … physics for the series. I believe they eventually settled on balloons filled with gelatin. Funnily enough water was a close consideration, but it wasn’t able to portray mass in the way they liked.

I had the Saturn version of the game. Had a friend who I trusted enough to loan my Saturn and a few games to over a weekend. When he gave it back he had unlocked almost all the costumes for every character.

I ADORE 2 the most 3 was pretty good and 4 is great and has a variety of costumes and shirts for the characters But MAN is 4 the most difficult!!! Like I said in this video I love this series (and any fighting games that have some sort of edginess to it!) That made me love to wear shirts from edgy clothing stores like sharkrobot or hot topic! It's actually not uncommon for pro wrestlers to study real martial arts as well. Not only does it help the show, since actually knowing how to fight is a great way to look like you know how to fight, but it also has a history of helping to enforce the intended outcomes (there was a big dust-up when pro wrestling companies first started going the scripted route to ensure entertainment value, since not every wrestler was on board with doing that). Of course they wouldn't do any pro-wrestling bullshit in a real fight. That said, fighting games like this are a lot like martial arts movies in interactive form, showing what the arts mythologize themselves as and allowing the player to experience them in that ideal fantasy state. Like, it doesn't matter whether or not karate (for example) is effective in real life because what's on your screen isn't real life. Here, it's everything it's ever been cracked up to be.

Glad to see DOA, tbh it gets an understandable but also pretty unfair rep for how genuinely good feeling playing the games in the franchise are from earliest game to pretty much most of the later ones. Personally I'll always view DOA as the sister game to Virtua Fighter, it's well known DOA was on Sega Model 2 alongside VF2, but I feel like it's talk less about how the original DOA was actually also made using the VF engine as it's core base. There's a mentioned in an vg247 interview "Hayashi on fight "entertainment" when asked about how the VF crossover was planned out. Hayashi also said outside VF characters he would have liked to include Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue. Part of the reason I hold DOA 5 pretty high is that it's one of the few crossovers in "3D" fighting games that felt like it comes full circle, like the VF cast truly belonged alongside the cast, the inclusion of Mai was neat too, which is funny since I recall Mai & FatalFury were mentioned as one of the early influence used in differentiating DOA and VF by being more provocative. Apparently later stage transitions were also influenced by Mortal Kombat of all things.

Ok so: -The PS1 version is actually an unfinished version, the real deal is DOA++ for arcede, but this is fine too. Also Itagaki dosent like this version, he likes the Saturn one. -Bass wants to overprotect Tina, but she wants to do other things with her life, so its basically a family issue, still they love each other, this plot was basically finished in DOA5. (This was probably because of Tina's mother or something) -You can fight Ayane if you reach to Kasumi under 5 minutes, if you did it correctly you will fight the purple ninja instead of her sister. In DOA ++ you fight Ayane in the semifinals, since thats its a canonical battle and in PS1 you need to beat the game with all characters to unlock her. -The problem with Kasumi is that she wants a quiet life, but is forced to fight, Itagaki make her interesting, but actual TN dont do justice to the character, they still like her.
