A bullied teenager considers drastic action.
FLOPPY TOAST WITH DRIPPY BUTTER is used with permission from Paul Stainthorpe. Learn more at / paulstainy .
Chloe is a quiet young teenage girl having a hard time. She's bullied relentlessly at her school by the other girls. But she's too scared and cowed to say anything to her parents or the school authorities, and she suffers in silence every day.
Eventually, Chloe can't take it anymore, and she contemplates drastic action. But at her lowest point, she meets another girl, Alice, who helps her see another way out of her despair.
Directed by Paul Stainthorpe from a script co-written with Simon Jefferson, this short drama tracks the effect that bullying has on a young girl at school, escalating to the point where she considers the worst possibilities of escape. Shot with a naturalism that can be both cold and gritty at school but warmly cozy at home, the storytelling is perceptive in its portrayal of bullying as a chronic source of stress, which can escalate to the point of becoming a persistent trauma.
Even as Chloe is at home, memories of her difficulties at school continue to flood her consciousness, a process exacerbated by loneliness within her family as well. Combined with the abusive texts that Chloe gets from her tormentors every day, we can understand how easily someone can deteriorate under a silent but relentless barrage. Left almost entirely to herself, Chloe begins to descend into a mentally dark place.
Actor Ellie Bindman deftly captures the roiling emotion underneath Chloe's withdrawn demeanor. The character may have sparse dialogue, but Bindman's flickers of emotions come through, and her efforts to hide her feelings are equally wrenching. Just as she hits rock bottom, she crosses paths with Alice, who shows up just at the right time. Played by actor Rhiannon Jones with forceful compassion, it's almost easy to mistake Alice as some kind of angel at first. But in many ways, she truly is Chloe's angel, giving her the space to share her experience and find refuge and understanding.
Unabashedly empathetic, FLOPPY TOAST WITH DRIPPY BUTTER may have a cozy, comforting title and a warmth in its visual approach. But it evokes a dark, difficult mental reality for many young people today, where stressors come at all angles and are not readily apparent on the surface. In the end, the space to speak openly and honestly -- and an equally important ear to listen, empathize and offer support -- keeps Chloe from going over the edge. That may seem "obvious" to some, both in the storytelling and in life. But with the mental health of young people (and perhaps older ones as well) facing immense challenges, there's a disconnect between the obvious and the lived reality -- and films like this are a reminder of the importance of closing that gap.

If people don’t understand, tell them. Tell them with as much detail & information & background to help them understand. Especially the people whose jobs & lives revolve around helping others. Most ho into that field because they want to help people. Some are brilliant at it, some are terrible, the rest are somewhere in the middle. But they should all be willing to listen.

Tell everyone....parents, school staff.....anyone you know. I'm not advocating what I did, but I was bullied through infants, junior and into senior. And at home! One day I was in the school yard...I sensed what was on some kids faces and knew trouble was coming from behind.....so instinctively stepped to one side. The biggest school bully went flying past my shoulder and into a heap on the floor. Knowing he'd give me a beating if he got up, I jumped on top and held him down. To my amazement I'd pinned him to the floor and there was no way I was going to let go. We were surrounded by all the kids jn school, they knew I'd (inadvertently) done something they dreamed they hadn't the guts or opportunity to do. I didn't harm the bully but clearly he knew he was being humiliated. I still daren't let him go. Eventually the teacher on yard duty pushed through; assessed the situation and said to the well known bully, 'It's not nice, is it ?'. From that day I never had a problem.

What happened with me is that I was not stereotypically bullied. Nothing is more lonely than having everyone in school act like they like you and yet you know that they don't and never will. The mocking, the humiliation, the constant ridicule from everyone around you. And it's so painful. I wasn't shoved into lockers or beat up in bathrooms but everyone hated me for no reason. I was different. That's all there was. So I knew when people were being nice to get something out of me-or to just be two faced for the hell of it. I got used to it but that didn't make it hurt any less. Which is why I go to online school now. Aka: the school for kids like me, who had little to no friends in brick-and-mortar school and suffered the consequences of being an outcast.

This was really beautifully done. So many people are struggling with mental health these days, people of all ages at all times of day & night. And most of them think no one will understand & that they’re all alone. Yet the stories are invariably similar. Someone somewhere in the world feels exactly the same way as you do right at this moment in time. And no one is ever truly alone. I like to think of us as grains of sand on a beach. One grain is surrounded by others which are touching the next grains & they’re touching the next. We’re all connected. And even more, the air that surrounds us also surrounds everyone else on the planet. That isn’t to say we aren’t special - every person has a place in this world. A role. Strengths & weaknesses with experience, skills & knowledge that are unique to them. Everyone matters. And life is about finding their specific path & role in life. Not everyone can or even needs to be the leader of a nation. Some people are important because they spend time playing with & looking after dogs & cats at daycare & boarding kennels. Some people are important because they collect rubbish & help keep our streets & homes safe & hygienic, preventing plagues of rats & disease; or write books that give millions ideas & inspiration; or make one person feel loved; or save lives; or give people the coffee & snack that gets them through their tough workday. It’s extra tough as a teen, when you feel things so deeply & subconsciously care so much what others think. I wish all teens could get a glimpse of the understanding that the day will come when those bullies don’t matter except as a painful memory. Most bullies are actually afraid of or intimidated by the people they bully. Not an excuse for them as there is no excuse for bullying people. Just an explanation of why they are the way they are. And most former victims will come to a stage in life when they don’t even think of the people that made their life so miserable. It’s a matter of getting through the tough time to when life is better. And when it comes to bullies, telling someone (a trustworthy adult) who has the power to intervene is vital. And making them listen & understand by telling them as much as possible about the situation, so they have the knowledge & understanding to make something happen to stop the bullies. Then getting past that horrible time to when things are better. To when you know that you fit in to your part of the world & you have a place & purpose. Suicide is after all, a permanent response to a temporary situation.

Yep. I found two of the kids who bullied me on FB. I ripped them to shreds. I'm 65 and they're a little older. It still hurt until I told them what they are and what I think of them and what bullying does to a person - in front of all their old friends. And I even got a heart from someone who saw my comments.

Uhh bullying has nothing to do with "emotional maturity" most of the time actually, most bullies are way more emotionally mature than most bullied kids. Low emotional maturity basically means being reactive and being very expressive of feelings / not having them undercontrol (trying to suppress feelings though is just trying to wipe it under the carpet instead of controlling them), and people pick on that fast that X can be annoyed easily or something. Or are you using term "low emotional maturity" incorrectly accidently (or on purpose?), Because it defineatly isnt synonym for good morality, so I really wonder why you would imply that?

I am so grateful that my son came to me when he was suicidal. But then he started keeping it to himself and one day his ex girlfriend contacted me and told me he was suicidal and screen shot his text to her. I contacted him and we talked about it and he started coming to me again. We have gotten through some dark days but he is making it. When I felt suicidal I contacted my one of the pastor's at my church and they got me through mine. Talking it out helps but the dark valleys still come. Just keep talking.

I have been living with a migraine for seven years now. In the beginning there were medications as well as injections that helped. Two years ago I was getting 24 Botox injections every 3 months but they quit working two years ago. I have seen several neurologist and I will see a new one later this month. I also get vertigo very regularly as well as getting woke up with panic attacks. The last time I went to my VA neurologist they acted like we have tried everything. I am so very tired of the pain and must admit that the deep depression from that whole idea has left me considering the dark path out. I do take care of my daughter who is special needs and I have another daughter who has my granddaughter with another on the way. Without my daughters I do believe I would have left this place a few years ago.

This is such an amazing & emotional short film, I know how it feels to be bullied & to just end it all, bullying is never ok, you are always affecting someone's mental health to the point where they think suicide is the best way to end the pain & suffering that the bullies are giving to them, talking to someone who knows what they've gone through is the best way to get help & overcoming these emotions.

I was bullied in school. Just because I liked Queen in 5th grade, without knowing any English. Because I was overweight. I was so exhausted and never believed I could do any better. However.. I graduated with a hold medal. In sports, and school. I made a radical choice. I model. I lost 100lb and gained 30lb because I had to learn how to love my body. I moved to the US when I was 19, after 2 years being at the one of the best universities in Russia. I got married. To my professor. Ended up with a career, after graduation from Maryland:) Guess who wants to be my friend after I have achieved what they couldn't. I am not resentful. I am very friendly with them. Bullied life makes you stronger 💪. Weak at first. But stronger if you meet people like you were along the road. I did. I'm forever grateful.

I hated when my parents and school staff would say just ignore it. Because you can ignore it. The best way to explain it is like someone poking you over and over again. The first few times it doesn’t bother you as much but after 10 times you just want to scream at them to stop. Being bullied is like like but so much worse. It makes you think the worst about yourself.

I know how she feels. I was bullied a lot. I still am. A couple years who in 7th grade, I thought that barking was popular in school, and everyone was doing it.I barked like a dog one day. I got bullied and called a furry after that. One of the kids that gates me since 4th grade gave me a stuffed dog in Valentine's Day that had a squeaker in it. I used to have one of them as a toddler. I was happy because I thought someone actually cared enough to give me a gift, but her and a couple girls came up to me later and told me that it was a squeaker toy and they gave it to me because I was a furry. Another event connected to this is the time where we were supposed to bring anything but a backpack, and my mom told me to bring a litter container, and I did. Someone said "I guess she brang her litter to school because she can't use a toilet." That day, I was crying so much. I've considered suicide a few times but something always pushes me not to try it. I'm getting stronger every day. I'm actually about to go back to in person school since I did 8th grade in a homeschool. Wish me luck. 😖

I was that bullied girl 50 years ago. In the 7th grade we had an awards ceremony. I knew i wouldn't get an award....so i thought. BUT! I won an award for going to school every single day that year. I realized i could get through anything at the age of 12. Tell your parents. Tell the counselor. Tell other grownups. Call a hotline. Hugs

I've been standing on the edge for so long... can neither step back nor go. Blurry are my recollections trying to find when I became such a coward. The silent pain illustrated here is so real.

Well, there were 2 major lessons for me in the film: 1, saying, it doesn't matter if i dont understand. And 2, the fact you're just moving that pain onto someone else. Absolutely brilliant words of wisdom, thank you so much.

Parents- Get your children books on bullying!! I just worked at an elementary school for six months and the bullying I witnessed was horrific. Not even the kindergartners were immune from the older kids taunts.

8:51 - "mom's too busy to listen". That's quite a shame. On the other hand, it's mom's job to build a relationship where her daughter is comfortable going to her. This is one of the reasons why a healthy Mom and Dad relationship are essential to the up bringing of a child.

I was bullied a lot at my school. When i told the teacher or mom it sadly didnt make them stop. The teachers cannot really do much honestly. Yes they got punished but it only drove them to hurt me more. What saved me was me attacking them once in self defence. I didnt care if theyd get hurt, or if id get in trouble. The bullies dont necessarily have to be stronger than you. And guess what. No one helped that guy. No one! He screamed at others to stop me and they just watched freaking out. Cause nothing is worse when youre attacked by someone who's doped with adrenaline, full of pain, despair and rage. After that they have never approached me again. Its sad i had to sort it out myself but true. After that my self confidence grew and I dared to attack anyone who bullied my friends. They were left alone too as long as I was around.

Living is for some of us highly over rated... We shouldn't be so quick to judge. Sure if a person is young and is going through some regular things one should not consider to commit suicide... Light problems tends to get better. Serious ones - incurable illnesses as an example - not. Always try your best and seek help :)

What yall should do if someone bullies you is to fight back, bullies are actually really hard to get rid of since theyre actually very sensitive because they're mostly jelaous of you.But if it gets serious like this you should immediately tell anyone, because they cant hurt you anymore.I fought back and nobody ever bullied me since that day,you gotta be strong so they realize that they cant control you
